I'm been venturing a little on MP, but the communication aspect of it has been the most intimidating part. I did install SRS, but it doesn't seem to work for the I-16 that I fly on the WWII servers (I-16 doesn't have a radio, so I imagine SRS is not supported). Does the chat window work in VR??
-
Does anyone know how to use SRS with the I-16? Since there's no (operational) radio, I have no idea how to set up SRS for the I-16 in multiplayer. Thanks!
-
You may be right. I just did one more flight on the same server, but kept the rpm to no more than 2200 at all times (1800-2000 for much of the flight). Flew for about 40min and no issues.
-
Thanks, Plexus. To be honest, I didn't look at the RPM, but I was flying casually at 1/2 to 2/3 throttle, so I doubt it was anywhere near 2200. As for WEP, I practically never move that lever forward.

I tried flying the I-16 in multiplayer yesterday and kept having engine troubles - something I've never experienced in SP. The server requires a cold start, so I followed the startup and engine warming procedures (waited till oil temp gets to 50 and cylinders temp is out of the red) before taking off. It takes literally 10+ min to get in the air (which is why I rarely do cold starts in SP). Once in the air, I am always vigilant of the oil and engine temps and do play with the cowl and oil flaps to keep the temps "in the green". Regardless, on the first flight, I lost the engine about 7min after takeoff without any engagement - just flying around. Landed, restarted the mission - same thing: 10min of flying then the engine died. I had a quick engagement on the second flight, but I shot the guy down in less than 30sec, and the engine parameters were still in the green. Then 5 min later, out of the blue, the engine ceases again. Attached are the screenshots from immediately before (second picture) and immediately after (first picture) the engine died (from the second flight). I hope you guys can help me figure out what the heck am I doing wrong. Otherwise, I'm going back to SP - I can't waste 15min on warm up and taxi to get just 5-10min of flying. Thanks in advance!

I guess this is for the Moderators: Would it be possible to separate the SCREENSHOT AND VIDEO THREAD into a separate thread for screenshots and a separate one for videos. I have no idea how everyone else feels about this, but I enjoy watching DCS videos. However, they are scattered in between those gigantic images that take forever to load. Let the people who enjoy looking at pictures have their thread and those of us who prefer watching videos have a dedicated video thread. Respectfully, Doc3908

Any news on getting the VR mask selectively enabled/disabled? Up until now, with every new update I've had to edit the HMDMask.fx file as was suggested earlier in the thread. That worked just fine until this latest update. Now, changing the return value of the vsOctagonMask method, I started getting the "Pure server required" message when trying to connect to MP. Put the return values back to 1, 1, and MP works again, but the silly VR mask is on again. Argh!!

Question: How do you survive in a complex aerial engagement?
Doc3908 replied to Doc3908's topic in MiG-19 Farmer B
I find the 60s and early 70s era to be the most challenging. The WW2 warbirds and even the Korean era jets were relatively slow and did not have missiles, so you have to merge and visually identify the target before engaging. Since the 80s modern technologies have made situational awareness ever more immersive. However, during the 60s-70s the first missiles appear that you can fire from pretty far off, while radar, RWR, and IFF are in their infancy. You are absolutely correct that, without communication, situational awareness becomes a really uphill battle... -
ED SIMS SCREENSHOT AND VIDEO THREAD!!!! (NO USER MODS OR COMMENT)
Doc3908 replied to rekoal's topic in Screenshots and Videos
On my way back to base in my MiG-19 - out of ammo - I came across a lone B-52 still headed towards my airbase. The only option left: TARAN (ramming of the enemy aircraft). -
Hi guys, I need some guidance on how to survive a big aerial engagement while flying the MiG-19: I have a SP mission where twelve B-52s, escorted by four F-4Es and four F-5s, are intercepted by my flight of four Mig-19s and another friendly flight of eight Mig-21s. The MiG-21s get there first, so by the time my MiG-19 flight gets close, it's all a big mess. When approaching the armada, all I see is dots all over the sky. I can't tell who is who, and with no IFF I don't wanna take a chance of hitting a friendly. But by the time I'm close enough to visually identify an F-4, it's already shot an AIM-7 (or an AIM-9) my way. I have no problem tackling an F-4 or an F-5 one-on-one, but in the middle of such a mess of enemies and friendlies, I feel lost and usually end up dead. How do you guys handle multi-aircraft engagement in the MiG-19? I'm sure many of you fly online, where massive fights are commonplace. How do you identify friends and foes with no IFF (yes, I know there's an IFF switch, but that's just a transmitter)? Thanks for any advice! Doc

A quick fight between two Su-27s and two JF-17s. -
I can confirm this: It goes from guns to safe to camera and stops. Works with the mouse just fine, but when binding it to a switch, it gets stuck after going through the three settings.

Hi, I can't seem to bind the A-4's (v.2) hook up/down action to my Warthog. The configuration utility makes the assignments to the appropriate throttle switches, but the switches do nothing. Tried different switches - same result. Even tried the stick and still no-go. I have a similar problem with the master-arm switch. Everything else (LG, flaps, spoilers, etc.) binds and works just fine. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else tried to bind the hook to a switch? Thanks, Doc By the way, it would be nice if there was a toggle for the hook (like there is for the LG). Otherwise you need either a 3-way switch or two separate switches for the hook-up and the hook-down.

No comparison! The DCS version of the I-16 is superior in every respect. And, yes, the landing requires a dance on the rudder pedals, but it's fairly easy once you get the hang of it. The Spit, on the other hand, still throws me for a loop (literally!) once in a while. It's easy to bring down smoothly, but as the speed decays, it becomes progressively harder to keep her straight. I've learned to add a bit of breaks to help her slow down and avoid the wingtip scrapes on the tarmac. And, yes, the P-47 is a pussycat by comparison.

Doing CQ on the boat - 6 cat-shots, 6 traps (and some silly fun in-between). Not really following any CQ procedures - just practicing traps and having fun.

Carrier crew ignores new aircraft taxing to catapult
Doc3908 replied to MirrorNext's topic in Bugs and Problems
From my experience, these are separate issues and not related to 2.7OB. The "Your flight is delayed" shows up when you have too many AI aircraft launching. I've seen it occasionally when I've had two flights of bandits and another friendly flight launch at the start of the mission in addition to my flight. It usually resolves itself after a couple of minutes - you wait for a bit watching the other aircraft take off, then all of a sudden you're in the cockpit and ready to go. The second issue is more annoyingL VERY often, I, too, find myself taxing up the catapult and the launch crew is just standing around (the cat director actually seems to spit on the ground, lol!). There's no way to get them to launch you. I usually just circle around, and the second (rarely the third) time, they come alive and go through the launch sequence. But it is annoying, especially when doing CQ. I assume you are calling ground crew to request launch, correct?? -

Wow, pretty good flying against that F-18...

Doing CQ is getting old, so I decided to try dogfighting in T-45 against an A-4 set as a "civilian" (i.e. with no weapons). The A-4 is AI controlled, set to "veteran". Well, I got my a** handed to me neatly. There was literally nothing I can do: The A-4 out-climbed me and out-rated me easily. I don't fly in MP, but I'm curious if anyone has tried dogfighting in the T-45 against any other airframe flown by a human opponent (obviously, no weapons - just chasing each other around).
-
If it makes you feel better, I have the same issues. Just flew a single-player mission against an AI F-5 and had to quit after 2min - it literally is a slide show. I can post a video if anyone cares to see. I had a hard time moving the TDC around, too. I had clouds turned on but on the minimal setting (light and scattered). Nothing else except my Jeff and the F5. My set up is i7-8500, 24GB, 1080GTX, 1TB SSD. (I wonder how multiplayer will be...)

Same: No SRS, single player - no problem at all. Didn't have a single issue with this mod...
