  1. Mav161, Just so your aware of two things mate. With Ryzen your dram speed should be 2x what your FLCK speed is. For example dram is 3200mhz FLCK is 1600mhz. Your new screen. I use a cheap 50" Hisense 4k TV as a monitor at 60hz or 60fps. It is limited to 60hz by the TV because it cannot refresh the image on the screen any faster. It's not a bottleneck as 60hz is enough for smooth gameplay in a simulator. I get no stutter at all. Your new screen "might" give you more problems as you have doubled your resolution to 2k from 1k, or 1080p. It's refresh rate is now 144hz. Your PC is now going to have to work much harder unless the new screen supports freesync. If it supports freesync then you should be fine as that means you can use a "variable refresh rate" instead of a fixed one. I hope you get it to perform the way you want mate.
  2. Its a bad show all round really. Both Nvidia and AMD advertised a MRSP at launch. Then when they actually are available that price is a distant memory. A mate of mine his GTX 1080 properly failed with no come back or repair possible. He bought a 3070 off eBay last week for over £800. Even when I found an AMD MSI 6800xt the price was high but worth it considering what my 2080ti was now worth. When it arrived it had a corrupted vBios and I had to send it back for a refund. I'm glad I did some upgrades in August last year so I can sit tight and wait until this crazyness ends.
  3. I just want to make sure I have not given the wrong impression. I don't have a problem with miners buying graphic cards. I'm no fan of scalpers using bots that's for sure. My point is there are miners out there with a lot of either nvidia 30 series or AMD 6000 series graphic cards. They could not have bought them from all from scalpers or retailers. A popular manufacturer was caught scalping their own products. My issue is the manufacturers advertising something as available for sale but for some reason it doesn't make it to the retailer. I also wonder how retailers are coping. They have nothing to actually sell so they can make a profit.
  4. No mate I'm not a vet, just fascinated with air combat in the 20th century. When I was growing up a man two doors down from me was a Lancaster and Mosquito pilot and navigator in WW2. My interest started from that. Vietnam is just a particular interest of mine. Robin Olds story is one of many that stand out and grab my interest. I did try to join the RAF at 19 but I have Asperger's and Dyslexia so got turned down. It's only a suggestion mate but you could try the delanclip to get you by until you get the VR you want. Cheaper than Track IR. Much better than using POV buttons.
  5. Yeah, I am a big fan of the Vietnam era of air combat and moustaches! I use to be a fan of water cooling, as I always have a windowed case. However I have looked at it more and more recently wondering if its needed practically at all anymore. Is it now just aesthetic? I think I still have a hangover from the days of pushing a 2700k Sandybridge to 5.2ghz. I think were seeing the last of those days since Ryzen matured. With precision boost for CPU's and GPU boost for the graphics is overclocking becoming a thing of the past. I look at my own system and everything is undervolted now. My 5600x does not need to go past 4.6ghz for me so I lock it to 1.2v. My 2080ti never hits 100% at 1950mhz so its locked at .950mv. How times have changed, mind you I have been putting my own systems together since 1998. I apologise for the thread hijack, this thread has gone a bit off coarse!
  6. Yeah I looked at my Corsair H100i after watching this and thought "do I really need you"? Especially as the Corsair Link software can be a resource hog. Plus there is the added peace of mind not worry about a pump going or a pipe leaking. Especially as the pipe run is over my 2080ti!!!
  7. The thing I want to know is how so many miners got hold of so many. I have been looking since day 01 and I have never even seen the "add to basket" option at any UK retailer for a 3080. I think I saw a 3070 twice in January. Its a shame but I know three people with a 30 series and they all finally gave in to buying them on eBay. Just how many of these things went out the back door of the factory. Didn't one guy in China have something like 50+ of these hooked up??? Its not shutting the door after the horse has bolted but when its out of sight and the dust has settled!!!
  8. Hes on a Z68 chipset mate, I dont think M2's were around then. Could use a pcie adapter though.
  9. I saw that video this morning too. Made me think that the headache of installing a 240 AIO simply isnt worth it. Shame hes caught COVID.
  10. Maybe not an external one Lee, could run into transfer rate problems and usb drop outs. If your going to get one, get another internal one. They are easy enough to fit mate. I just had a look on eBay. Crucial and Samsung ones are available 250gb for about 25-30 quid. Your motherboards data ports are halfway down the right hand side of your motherboards. If you get stuck just come back on here or send me a pm.
  11. Thinders right about the dram. If your in the UK go to Amazon, Scan Overclockers, Ebuyer or Novatech. Buy a Corsair 3200mhz C16 AMD Optimised kit. Don't get the one XMP Certified, that for Intel and won't be stable at 3200 XMP. It's up to you 4x16gb will be better for Ryzen in the long run. However at 1080p 60fps it won't matter right now. So if 2x16gb is cheaper you'll be fine. You only see those differences at 4k resolution or using VR. The sets are easy to find on eBay used too. Search Corsair 3200 C16 32gb AMD. If you are after absolute best performance then you will have to get a G Skill C14 kit but those are between 230-250 pounds. The dram and using MSAAx2 instead of SSAA, should improve your DCS experience. You may might find you can increase your texture settings too.
  12. Hi Lee, Regarding your sudden pause. If DCS is installed on the mech that's your problem. So check what size your DCS install is in GB and see if you can work things to store it on an SSD. If I was you I would do the following. eBay is your friend on this one. If your OS is on the SSD and files and games on the mech. See if there is a SSD on eBay to store DCS on. That is if you have a spare data power connector. Again find some used ddr3 xmp 1600, I suggest Corsair but that doesn't matter. As long as the 4x4gb or 2x8gb or 4x8gb match. You can sell them on again at a later date if you do a full upgrade. Finally look for a used aftermarket cpu cooler that has intel and amd fittings. Most mid range air coolers should be fine. Use it to put an overclock of 4.4ish ghz on your 2700k using between 1.25_1.28 score. It will be worth reading an overclocking guide for Sandy ridge as it will give you a good boost. The SSD you can use in whatever upgrade you might build in the future. The DDR3 can be sold on. A cooler can be used for something like a modern AMD or Intel cpu if you upgrade to one. The overclock only costs time. All that should give your system a worthwhile boost for DCS. You can even try MSI Afterburner and the OC Scanner in it to see if you can get a boost from your gpu. Software like CPUZ, GPUZ and HW monitor will help you out. Please note I only suggest using eBay or buying used to save you any expense. Regarding saving for Alienware. Watch a build on YouTube, if you feel confident just build your own. Plenty of members on here can give advise. Scan UK or Overclockers are reliable retailers. If you do want to buy off the shelf I would have either of those stores build one for you. Your not paying so much of a premium for the brand. Let me know how it goes.
  13. Hi I'm sure we can help you out mate. Straight up it's not your TV. First off with your Radeon 5700, it won't give you 60fps with SSAA. Turn it off and use MSAAx2. My old 5700xt couldn't handle SSAA @ 60fps. For the next part turn Fullscreen to OFF. If you dont already have them install GPUZ and Ryzen Master so you can check your system usages for your cpu and gpu. Open both, leave them in the background. Then fire up DCS and load up a mission. If you have the FA-18 I use the Valley Run mission as a benchmark for performance. You can use any though. Fly around for 5 mins at a low altitude as that is more demanding. Then pause and ALT+TAB out and check GPUZ and Ryzen Master too see if your gpu or cpu are being maxed out. Finally what is the exact model number of your DDR4? If you can gather that info it should help anyone on here help you further.
  14. I know what you mean mate. Most of my kit is eBay specials to be honest. Open box, returns or slightly used parts that come boxed as new. So I optimise in a different way. My 5600x is the only new part I have and it came from Scan. I was saving every penny I could this year to put aside the pennies for a 3080 or a 6800xt. I had the luck of buying a MSI 6800xt this month, sadly as I use a 50" TV at 4k they have a problem using HDMI connections at that resolution, lots of black screens and crashes. In the end I sent it back for a refund. I am not an AMD, Intel or Nvidia fan I just buy what works at the time. For me there are too many worrying reports regarding the 6800xt right now. If they die down before a Nvidia 3080 comes into stock I will try again and re-purchase a 6800xt. Like you I like the appeal of 16gb with SAM. If not I will go for a 3080. I tried VR but I get motion sickness and could not get comfortable with it. So I use 4k with track ir. As for the memory your G Skill is far superior to mine. My Corsair kit was about £130.00 used on eBay not bad for 32gb, it also reports as SK Hynix in CPUz as I think its a later kit. It will overclock to 3600mhz but wont use tighter timings than C16 18 18 36 @ 3200mhz. It works though and as long as I have 60fps to use vsync I am happy. I use it at 3200mhz as it makes no difference to DCS or any other game I have.
  15. I agree with Thinder, 5800x will give you nothing over the 5600x for DCS VR or flatscreen. As for Dram I checked 3200mhz C16 vs 3600mhz C16, the gain was minimal if anything at all. I use 4x8gb sticks of this kit. CMW16GX4M2Z3200C16. G Skill C14 kits are very good and the best option, difficult to find in the UK for me which is why I have Corsair. For a motherboard I personally use a MSI X570 Gaming Edge Wifi. I didn't get B550 as they had not been released when I bought my X570. It was also an open box from CCL for £110.00 so a bargain at the time. Its a solid board at a good price. Now like Quoi87 said its nice to have a NVME. I have a Gen 4 1tb model with my OS and games on the same drive and it boots up super fast. Actual mission loading times in DCS though, no real difference over a regular Sata SSD. So you could save money there. I only bought as again I found it for £90 on the Ebay. As for a graphics card, I use a 2080ti for the vram. My brother has a 3070 and my 2080ti performs better in DCS especially over PG and Syria. Only making the suggestion as an idea. A used EVGA 2080ti with warranty left over would perform better in DCS. I get 5-10 fps more than my brothers 3070. I dont use VR though I use 4k with Track IR. I say EVGA as I believe they have a transferable warranty should you need it. In an ideal scenario I would save on the CPU, and mobo and buy a 3080 if you can find one. All this is only advise based on my own 4k experience with DCS. At the end of the day its your rig, your money and your the only one that needs to be happy with it. Just remember synthetic tests on reviews don't translate smoothly into DCS performance. I found the balance between my 5600x, 3200 DDR4 and 2080ti perfect for 4k in DCS. The only change I would make is a Nvidia 3080 if I could find one. It took some time to get my rig right to be able to land at Dubai or Ramut David in Syria while still maintaining 4k@60hz vsync at high/ultra settings.
  16. Yeah, Treker probably has got it right there. I would look in your Windows 10 apps and uninstall MSI Afternurner and Riva Tuner, if they are there!. Then go in Programs X86 and delete the MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner folder, again if they are there!. Probably not needed but better safe and all that just in case. Then run the installer for MSI Afterburner 4.6.3 Beta5, the Riva Tuner installer should run automatically when Afterburner has finished. They are part of the same package. You should be good to go after that, on the off chance Treker's link does not work for you. This is the exact one I downloaded and use. MSI Afterburner 4.6.3 Beta 5 Download (guru3d.com)
  17. No problem Burt, if you need anymore help or advise just ping me a PM. You can get the beta5 version on Techpowerup. When you get it installed. This is only a guide, set the power limit to max, try upping the memory 100mhz at a time see what you can get stable, ie if you can fly around in DCS for an hour its probably ok. The memory might go to 200-400+ depending on the quality of your gpu. Then try to get the best clock speed you can using between 0.950-1.025mv settle on whatever suits you best.
  18. I use Msi Afterburner 4.5.3 Beta 5. Its the version that can show your actual GPU memory usage not just how much is allocated. It installs with Riva Tuner statistics so you need to let it install both. In practise with most Nvidia 20 series GPU's I have found that whatever OC scanner results are you can usually drop the voltage and lift the clock a little. On my 2080ti for example it showed 1950mhz @ 1.025mv I can actually do 1980mhz @ 0.950mv. It takes a little trial and error to dial it in and every card is different. There are a few Youtube videos, search "MSI Afterburner undervolt guide" I would advise not to go mad though, you dont want the card screaming as hard as it can. It could raise temps and then its only going to throttle down and drop clock speed anyway. I would see how high you can get the clock using 1.0mv, maybe 1.025. Definitely see what it can do stable using 0.975mv or even 0.950mv. It makes temps a lot cooler so therefore no throttling down. Please remember the only golden rule with MSI Afterburner. Dont click the "Windows Icon" or enable it to apply settings on start up!!!
  19. HI, I updated DCS Open Beta tonight and then when it started up again all my modules are gone. This is the error that shows up. However its not just the modules listed. I am back on the basic game without any modules I bought except for campaigns. I checked my firewall "MS Defender" and there is no sign that DCS is being blocked. Cheers Bossco I'm not sure why but this got fixed with a complete re-download and re-install of DCS OB. I did have to re-install Windows 10 after a system crash two weeks ago. This was thanks to a crash during AMD driver install due to a 6800xt I bought having a corrupt vbios, check the forums. I installed DCS from a backup I keep. Something within the module files must be out of date. Or maybe even was linked to my previous Win 10 install. Either way this fixed my problem.
  20. Thinder straight up I agree with you entirely, 100%. For my own Ryzen system I swapped out 2x16gb for 4x8gb a while ago. My advise to Lee1 was specific for his system, he is using a Sandybridge 2600k in a Z68 motherboard. The difference will be so minimal he may aswell go for the least expensive option that he can find and put a mild to moderate overclock on his 2600k untill he is in a position to upgrade the system completely. If he was building a new system I would advise a 5600x with probably 4x8gb sticks of 3200mhz C16 DDR4.
  21. I did manage to buy a MSI 6800xt at a decent price in the UK. However down to a problem in the vbios it could not hold idle power or connect to a 4k display without regular black screens and crashes. After 2 weeks of trying to get it to work I returned it for a refund. Painful to do as I waited ages for it to be in stock. Not an isolated problem when you check the forums. It seems like many manufacturers or even AMD themselves rushed a few models out. So if you do buy, maybe not from a scalper on eBay as it seems a few will arrive DOA like mine did. For the UK at least I would wait until someone like Scan has them in stock. Luckily I had my 2080ti to go back to so not too bad.
  22. Hi Lee, 4k in DCS is demanding. Regarding your dead stop, that sounds like a bottleneck somewhere. If you are getting into DCS in a big way. It is a good idea to try to learn a little but about how a computer works and then learn how to work it so it works best for you. As for your dram, my advise is to get what you can get hold of at the right price as long as the modules match exactly. There are those that will argue that there is a difference between 2x8gb and 4x4gb. The difference is minimal and wont help with you sudden pauses. So for now while you are on Sandybridge, get what you can used and save your money for a more modern system down the road. As for Syria its a demanding map in general. As far as I know there is more optimisation to come on the Syria map, not 100% on that though. I get stutters on Syria and my system is top end for DCS. The cpu you have is an overclocking version and one of the best available circa 2012. It will overclock quite easily. Try having a look on such as Youtube for videos on "overclocking 2600k". You can also search for readable guides, there will be many. It would improve your performance. However please read up on it first. Try to answer this one what hard drive is DCS stored on? Ie, Mechanical HDD or a SSD, most use a SSD now to load DCS. Did you build your system? Did someone build it for you? Or was it provided from a store? Finally where in the world are you based, it will help sourcing anything you might need. For your system now, a 4-4.5ghz overclock on your cpu would help a lot. You will need an aftermarket cooler. Some proper matching dram rated for XMP 1600mhz will help too. This is how it starts mate. You find a game you like such as DCS, then you get into building and overclocking your PC so it performs better. If you can download "GPUZ" from "Techpowerup". Run it and find out what graphics card you have installed.
  23. I built my rig pretty much to play DCS in single player at 4k 60fps using vsync and a Track IR. I was chasing a smooth stutter free experience even down low such as Dubai etc. I mostly use single player DCE campaigns AMD 5600x, improvement over my previous AMD 3600 and 9900k. Six cores are enough for DCS now. MSI X570 Gaming Edge Wifi, just a solid mobo with pcie 4.0 for the future. 32gb 3200 C16 DDR4, I had 3600 C18 at the time to test, no difference in DCS that I could measure. 32gb is better than 16gb, 64gb is overkill at the moment. Nvidia 2080ti, I have had the chance to try a 6800xt and a 3080. No massive gain really. I could go from MSAA x2 upto x4 but shadows etc still had a similar impact. If a 3080 came up at the right price I would buy it. I'm not skinning myself for one as my 2080ti does just fine right now. I would like a 6800xt but I bought one recently and returned it as the drivers for me were awful. Black screens galore. 1tb NVME Gen 4 drive. Did nothing to improve loading times over a sata ssd. I have been putting a few gaming pc's for friends, family and word of mouth during lockdown so I had the chance to test a few configurations. This is what I chose for my personal rig.
  24. As for the drivers in practise no. Windows 10 "should" work the same with both drivers installed. However whenever I swap from AMD to Nvidia and vice versa. I usually remove the driver and relevant software in Windows. Boot into safe mode, run DDU to clean out the old stuff. Then reboot and install my new drivers. Better safe than sorry.
  25. Using MSI Afterburner and using the OC Scanner tool is a safe bet. Just dont set it to apply settings at windows startup. Then if something goes wrong everything goes back to square one at the reboot. Once you have used the OC scanner save it to a profile in MSI Afterburner and load it everytime you play DCS. I used a similar process for my 2080ti. I used the OC Scanner to see what was possible and then tweeked an undervolt/overclock from that. There are plenty of useful guides on Youtube to walk you through it. I think Jay2Cents does a good GPU overclocking guide that is pretty straight forward.
