  1. 1. Vietnam War - POLL

    • Yes, it would create a new dimension to the DCS World simulator
    • No, I prefer 3rds to still work on aircrafts, and to fly in the same old Caucasus

Personally i doubt lower FPS of map like Marianas is a performance issue per se, it looks like it is conscious and deliberate decision of developer for this map to have exceptionally high visual fidelity at cost of some performance. So far i didn't see ED decreasing visual fidelity of Marianas map to increase its performance. Its always some compromise. Obviously if they would decrease level of detail, terrain mesh resolution, textures resolution etc. performance would skyrocket, but they have chosen not to do that for this particular map.

There are some optimisation measures which can improve the situation a bit, but there is no magic techniqe which can give both fantastic visual fidelity and fantastic performance at the same time. This would require different way how PC interact with this map, like Vulkan API or multithreading they are working on.

Than the question becomes which Vietnam war do you want, the air war has three distinct phases, early to 68, 68 to 72 a solid four year period where not a single documented kill with any North Vietnam fighter occurred, and the late period 72 to the end where the NVAF finally re-emerged as an organized force.  If your fighting Mig's anywhere from 68 to 72 you is wrong.

I would be down for late 72, doesnt rlly matter that much as nothing is really purely historical down to aircraft blocks to time periods in dcs (ex. 80s multiplayer server with 2016 f16 modification set in caucasus)

For those that may have not seen the latest video from Phenom yet, here is his new Vietnam era video he posted 2 weeks ago. What is so appealing about the Vietnam era is how much of a sandbox it will be especially with the new aircraft on the horizon like the F-100 Super Saber, F-4 Phantom, Mig- 17, A-1 Skyraider, A-6 Intruder, F-104 Starfighter, A-7 Corsair II, C-130, H47 Chinook and the OH-58 Kiowa.

We would want vietnam map so we could do all 3 and much more.

Air war was much more then fighting MiGs. Daily attacks on "infrastructure", daily CAS. Daily troop trasport in helos. Etc.

Thing is there was a massive industrialization effort done in both North and South Vietnam between those years, so the map won't look the same.  While there was a lull, a program of rebuild was taking place, factories and industrialization were introduced especially in the south.  Nearly half a decade with massive budgets, the map changed as the population shifted from ag centered too the cities.  Going to make it very difficult to sell from a "realism" perspective is all I'm saying.  So it shouldn't be sold using that perspective, but if they get the topographical, climate, and terrain physical features, the vibe of the tropics well above the norm, than who cares.  But still going to have to pick a period to build the cities such as Saigon, it changed drastically.

Hi guys,

12 years later, where are we ?

Looks like latest tech enhancements, MT, new weather system, ground untits improvements, carrier etc... Created a cool foundation for such a map, isn't it ?

That might be a little optimistic. While I hope too, I believe we won't hear about it until DCS 3.0, (with Vulkan?).

I'm just going to state any module you may want on a Vietnam map would be at home in the cold war Germany map.
