SuperKungFu Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Just curious what are the recommendations for the best intel chip for DCS in mind? Of course I'll be doing other things like movie editing but mainly want the best bang for the buck for DCS. I was looking at the Intel i7 4960X Extreme Edition, but granted that's $1K price tag. I think $700 or below would be a good price for the chipset. Any advice would be appreciated. Oh, side question: what is the recommended RAM for DCS as well? 16GB or 32 GB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
kk0425 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I would think that is overkill for DCS. A 3570k or 4670k should serve you well for gaming. The higher end models add almost zero performance for games and are mostly used for CPU intensive tasks such as 3d or video rendering. But if it's in your budget then go for it. The 4960 should be a little more future proof. And 16 GB is plenty for DCS. I do just fine on 8 myself.
TZeer Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 (edited) i7 4960X is overkill. DCS does not support multicore properly. i7-4770 or i7-4670 is a better choice. You want the CPU with the best performance in a single thread application. The enthusiast platforms, like sandybridge-E, ivy bridge-e, hashwell-e always comes out a while after the normal range of cpu's has been out. And they normally don't give you any advantage in single thread performance due to using the same architecture but with more memory and more cores and some other minor differences. So a normal hashwell will most likely be faster then the ivy bridge-e in single thread performance. Overclock that bastard and you are way ahead. And if you break it, you can buy a new one, and still around half the price of the 1000$ one :) Edited March 3, 2014 by TZeer
howie87 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 (edited) Yep. Clock speed seems pretty important. I'm running a sandy bridge 2500k at 4GHz which is still fine. Whatever CPU you get, stick a decent cooler on it and OC that sucker. Makes a big difference in unit heavy missions. Edited March 3, 2014 by howie87
remon Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I wouldn't make any upgrades specificaly for DCS till after EDGE is out. We don't know how good the multicore support will be.
snuffles Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 I wonder how it performs on an AMD A6-6400 then? I don't always openly list my things. But when I do, I put it in my signature.
pacotito Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 (edited) At a minimum for dcs an I5-xxxxk. With you doing video editing an I7 would be better. I would agree that the extreme would be overkill for dcs but it would be better for video editing. With what you have in mind for your system I would recommend an I7-4770k with a good cooler and overclock. 16gb of ram is plenty for dcs. Lower latency ram is more important for gaming than the clock speed of the ram so I would recommend not wasting money on the high clock speed memory. What multi-core support? There has been no mention of multi-core, only multi-GPU. howie87 Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 In my opinion an I7-4770k and 16gb of ram is overkill. Even my old 2500k and 8gb of ram gets a locked 60 fps most of the time. You'd be much better off getting an i5 and 8gb of ram and spending the money you saved on a better graphics card. I doubt EDGE will make use of hyper threading or more than 8gb of ram but it will support DX11 and higher quality graphics. For video editing though, the i7 and extra ram might be useful.

I agree Howie. I am running DCS A10c/FC3 and a few other modules on an i7 920 at its default clock speed of 2.x and see 60 FPS with an Nvidia 760 4Gig card. So Video card is more important than CPU as long as the CPU is modern and upper class technology. This was a Boutique Builder iBuypower rig. ArtMan_NL Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 Why paying so much money for an Intel processor? With a AMD FX-6350 I'm getting framerates of 45 ~ 50 fps. Costs about 100 Euro. My graphics card is a Sapphire 7950 with 3 gig ram and my rig has 8 gig. of ram. I think an Intel i7 is overkill anyway. Most games don't use hypertrading so an i5 is sufficient enough if you want to stay at the Intel camp. /Arthur
pacotito Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 He is also going to be doing video editing. Which would make the I7 a better choice for him. Pacotito I7-5820k@4.5 Z99 extreme4 16gb ddr4 520gb ssd. Gigabyte ssc GTX960 SSC 4gb
diveplane Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 anything from a i5 onwards will give u good performance. happy quad core i5 owner here. https://www.youtube.com/user/diveplane11 DCS Audio Modding.
JaBoG32_Prinzartus Posted March 3, 2014 Posted March 3, 2014 (edited) With Helios, TS3, various GFX Mods, a Ram-Chache-SSD ( 840 Evo) etc, I have seen utilizing 10 GB Ram on my System, which is almost shocking. Hence I do recommend 16GB. Do not waste money on overkill cpu, unless you are looking for "the best" and not "the best value for money".
