S77th-konkussion Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Reprinted from NewsMax.com Monday, March 6, 2006 4:13 p.m. EST 'Top Gun' F-14 Jets Fly Final Mission The Navy's last two squadrons of F-14 Tomcats are heading home, ending the final combat deployment of the Cold War-era fighter jet that flew into the danger zone with Tom Cruise in "Top Gun." Fighter Squadrons VF-213 and VF-31 - 22 Tomcats in all - are scheduled to fly to Oceana Naval Air Station on Friday, one day before the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt is to return to Norfolk Naval Station, the Navy said Monday. The carrier is returning from a six-month deployment in support of the Iraq war. The Tomcats are to be replaced by F/A-18 Super Hornets later this year. Animalmother Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 so what do they do with it? do they store it as an insurance possibility in the case that a world war breaks out and the current inventory of fighter jets arent sufficient?
phantom_fly85 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 In case of a world war current air frames would be used and Boeing would ramp up production on those air frames. I can't see how it would be possible to go backward due to pilot's training and familiarity with a certain air frame and avionics.
Lixma 06 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Shame to see the F-14s go....an even worse shame is that they will forever be linked with Tom bloody Cruise.

Pilotasso Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Im a specialist of elimintating a pain with an even greater pain. The F-14 is still in service...In iran. Somehow I think we will know how well preserved they are soon. .
Cobra360 Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Sad thing is, they too will end up as scrap metal. If the Iranians are brave enough they will end up as AMRAAM food and the ones that can't or won't fly will have special delivery from a JDAM.
Pilotasso Posted March 6, 2006 Posted March 6, 2006 Jokes aside, Yeah Im a bit nostalgic about the F-14 right now. Its a bit sad that its to be gone. Even sader with the Iranian crysis. But I recon it was about time to be retired. It is progress, and if theres no need for it anymore I also have the consolation of knowing perhaps, despite recent events theres the preception that there no big threat to justify its continuation in service anymore. .
Rastus Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Shame to see the F-14s go....an even worse shame is that they will forever be linked with Tom bloody Cruise. Well these should help get Tom out of your head. http://www.patricksaviation.com/videos.php?action=search&p=1&q=fighter%20Fling&f=text&pp=10&s=relevance&o=desc 169th Mustang put me on to these, and they are great. Fighter Fling 2004 is cool with a dig at their replacements. Cheers.
markriley Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 If they run out of room in the bone yard, they can park one in my backyard. I will miss them so. Cool link to the videos by the way. nscode Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Try finding it on this deep underground site: http://66.102.9.99 Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Cobra360 Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Is there any cockpit image of f-14 around? I have never seen one... Front pit of the F-14D Back seat of the F-14D. Front seat in the F-14A Rear seat of the F-14A.
Starlight Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Is there any cockpit image of f-14 around? I have never seen one... read the NAVAIR manual. I've printed it (2 pages for sheet, printed front/back) and now I enjoy finding out what does what.... each gauge explained... really cool... just a shame that it's missing the part about radar/weapons system (anyway there are all HUD/MFD modes)
Swartz (LT) Posted March 7, 2006 Posted March 7, 2006 Definatly a shame about loosing the 14. Was my favorite plane until i saw Top Gun. Then it just became second best. Hate Tom Cruise.

Hawg11 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 so what do they do with it? do they store it as an insurance possibility in the case that a world war breaks out and the current inventory of fighter jets arent sufficient? Yes. They will remain serviceable for a pre-determined amount of time in the boneyard at DM. After which, they will be scrapped. http://www.sarimage.com/Aviation/DavisMonthan/ I don't care what anyone else says. Top Gun Rocks! Dave "Hawg11" St. Jean
phantom_fly85 Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Hawg11, thanks for the link and the above photos of the F-14 in storage. Very sad to see some of these planes going away and the lives they touched. 1
alert_ Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Sad news, really, I still thought that Tomcats (especially F14D with powerful AN/APG71)could do soem good service, for ex. what if you need to take out enemy AWASC orbiting deep in hostile territory, guarding with CAPs and S300s....I know USAF has a few F22 but a few Phoenix missiles would be better solution in teh case. F14D frames are only 10-15yrs. old and I dont understant while is such potent AC retired in its midlife...
