Archer7 Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Hey, I'm considering eventually buying a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS if I experience a sudden surge of money however I have some questions. How does it work with other aircraft than the Warthog? Does the HOTAS have enough buttons to control other aircraft and how does using the throttle work for controlling helicopters? How does it work with other games than DCS? Can buttons and switches easily be bound to say… any game? If the buttons are all wrong to be able to control other aircraft effectively with it then it wouldn’t be as interesting however I imagine most aircraft have about the same or fewer HOTAS buttons than the Warthog and as such you would generally have some switches to bind to other commands? I’m also curious about what users think of it. Anything anyone should know? Big? Heavy? Uncomfortable?
cichlidfan Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Yes, it works well with any aircraft, or even other sims, and yes it is heavy. :) ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero, i7-6700K, Noctua NH-D14 Cooler, Crucial 32GB DDR4 2133, Samsung 950 Pro NVMe 256GB, Samsung EVO 250GB & 500GB SSD, 2TB Caviar Black, Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! skouras Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 i'm not going to reply your questions because i'm pretty sure that once you open the box you gonna forget the questions about it!!! the TM warthog is the best hotas on the market right now you gonna love it and you gonna understand how great it is only if you play with it! just a notice if you plan to connect them on usb 3.0 don't download the firmware just plug and play..;);) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]W10(64bit)Asus Rog Strix Z370-F - i7 8700K - Dark Rock Pro 4 - 16 giga ram Corsair vengeance 3000 - MSI RTX 2070 Super - Asus Rog Phobeus soundcard - Z906 Surround speaker - Track ir5 - HOTAS Warthog
dburne Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 You will have plenty of buttons to play around with on the Warthog. The best way to use them, imho, is to learn the TARGET software - you can download the manual from the TM website. The most powerful way to use it is with the script editor, but it does have a learning curve. The GUI mode is pretty good too though, especially if you use it in " advanced" mode. I had no knowledge of scripting, and took the time to learn best I could a few months ago with the script editor, very glad I did. I use it for creating profiles for all my flight sims. Certainly not a requirement, you can just assign with the game's controller settings, but using the software does allow a lot more versatility. Of course if you fly DCS A-10C, it is pretty much just plug and play for that sim, I do not use Target software for it. The only thing I found lacking was in axis sliders/rotaries. I solved that by just adding a CH Throttle Quadrant to compliment my Warthog, so now I have plenty of sliders and some extra buttons as well. Archer7 Posted September 6, 2014 Author Posted September 6, 2014 Okay, searching around a bit I couldn’t really find a joystick or cyclic with more buttons than the Warthog joystick and throttles don’t seem to come with a lot more switches either. But where do you place it though? On two coffee tables next to your chair? Does it work comfortably up on your desk?
cichlidfan Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 But where do you place it though? On two coffee tables next to your chair? Does it work comfortably up on your desk? That issue is pretty much the same regardless which joystick you decide on. It is largely a matter of preference and space along with your desire/ability to create a more customized mounting solution. Shein Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Dude. What are those things clipped to your desk?! That's genius!
Hobo Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 JOYLOCs? But I think they went out of business.
MTFDarkEagle Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Jep they're JOYLOC's. Damn expensive pieces of kit though.. Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
Shein Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Yeah cause they're now out of business. Anybody have some good alternatives?
tintifaxl Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 JoyLoc's is correct. I got mine a few weeks before they closed down. Windows 10 64bit, Intel i9-9900@5Ghz, 32 Gig RAM, MSI RTX 3080 TI, 2 TB SSD, 43" 2160p@1440p monitor.

MTFDarkEagle Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Which might have something to do with them closing their doors. Jep! Considered getting them when I was in the VERY early stages of making a home pit. Glad I didn't and went the DIY route :) Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread

Archer7 Posted September 9, 2014 Author Posted September 9, 2014 One more thing about the Hog HOTAS: keybindings. I believe the HOTAS has at least two buttons that are not actually modelled in DCS: Z-axis slew and the friction wheel. So what if anything do HOTAS users bind them to?
Ktulu2 Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I and some others use the friction wheel for the view zoom/dept. As for the Z axis, i don't know what you refer to :/ I do DCS videos on youtube : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAs8VxtXRJHZLnKS4mKunnQ?view_as=public
lxsapper Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 He's talking about the Push function on the slew cursor. But there's more, the push function on the Mic Switch. And the Up on the mic switch (this one is modeled on the A-10C but has no function), so all of those can be mapped to extra functions (like TrackIR functions, if you are willing to program the whole thing in TARGET).

There's always more with this thing isn't there? I just noticed that there are two switches down on the front of the joystick which of I suppose one is the disengage lever but what's the other one, if anything? Also are slew and trim the only analogue buttons/switches (excluding sliders)?
lxsapper Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 The Padde lever at the front isn't actually the disconnect lever. But I use Mine as such. It's actually on the F-16C (called paddle Switch) and not present in the A-10C. The Other Button I think you mean the one just behind it. On the A-10C it's the NWS (Nose wheel Steering) Button. It engages and disengages NWS on the ground. But in the Air it works to manualy fire the TGP Laser. And as A/A refuling disconnect button (you actually have to press it to reconnect if you accidently disconnect and get the Disconnet light on the side brow).
