SharpeXB Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Months after staving off a trip to the boneyard, the embattled A-10 Thunderbolt II is headed to the Middle East where it could be used to fight Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria http://www.stripes.com/news/islamic-state-fight-could-breathe-new-life-into-the-a-10-1.305147 i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5

outlawal2 Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Hmm, wonder if they will be working with Syrian rebels and Iraqi troops as they would US troops... If you mean supporting rebels on the ground I would say doubtful... If for no other reason than the language barrier... "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO
Corrigan Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Yeah, I can't see that happening either. As an A-10 pilot I don't think I'd particularly want my attacks to be directed by someone whose training or motives I had no idea about. Well if they embed some "special people" with those troops, that would solve that, but it will be interesting to see what kind of missions they fly... Some of the early airstrikes in Iraq were coordinated with their troops werent they? I can see being wary of the syrian rebels, but they should be less wary of Iraqi military... Corrigan Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 Yeah, it was mostly the rebels I was referring to. I'm sure there are people in the Iraqi army who are US trained for stuff like that, and even so, they can embed people, as you say. Revan Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 again, they never would have gone to the boneyards. Even if the USAF somehow was able to get rid of the, the USMC and the US Army have said that they will take them so their soldier will still have the support. mwd2 Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 But do they (USAF/USMC) need really the A-10C in the actual oversea theater? - Can the F/A-18 not do the same from their CV? piXel496 Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 MQ-1 Predator and alike will probably proof more effective then an A10. old stuff I made
Laurius Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 (edited) First, I agree with mwd2's question at this stage of operations. However, I think that it would be nice to see A-10s running missions over Irak and/or Syria, but wouldn't that imply having JTACs on the ground for target designation ? Is the Iraki army trained enough for that purpose (I don't even think of regular Syrian army nor the rebels how moderate they are) ? NeilWillis Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 You think it is a good idea to be discussing an ongoing conflict? It's all just idle speculation, and frankly, with lives being lost over there, it's all rather tasteless. Stick to the sim guys, please?

Dropping stuff on targets, yes. Loiter over friendlies for 2-3 hours, no! And that was the idea behind a CAS dedicated platform. Keep the support near your ground forces long enough to effectively fight the enemy. Rush in, drop 2 or 4 bombs and rush out again, is a role for a lot of platforms. The A-10s loitering time an maneuverability at low speeds is unique and thoughtfully built into the plane to best suite its mission! If you don't like the war going on there, stop watching television and skip the news! It is an interesting thought! Like it or not currently real USAF planes are really attacking IS forces in Iraq and Syria... as we'll as hundreds or thousands of African people die from Ebola, little children stitch together your clothes, animals are butchered for their meat etc. It's not a nice world to live in, but not talking about it, won't change a thing about it, I fear. Cibit Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 Whatever happened to the news of a prop driven CAS platform for COIN work.
