Ashstomper Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 Hey all, my computer died last Friday so now I'm forced to upgrade a little sooner than I wanted. Does anyone see an issue with the gear below outside of them NOT being the latest generation of hardware. I always second guess myself when I build a new machine. Any input is welcome. I have no DCS until I buy new...AAaaarrgh!!! Ashstomper Posted September 30, 2014 Author Posted September 30, 2014 Yes, it's cheaper than the 780 Ti, but the 970 seems out of stock at the Egg. From what I've read the 970 Performs as well if not better than the 780 and cooler too. I still have time to change the order. But If you're saying I should go with the 970... That was my first choice. Maybe I'll have to wait for them to be in stock or just order from someplace else. GTX970 > 780 Ti correct? Thanks much! cichlidfan Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 GTX970 > 780 Ti correct? From everything I have seen, yes! If you can find one or wait until they restock, it just seems like a far better way to spend your money. That's the one I just put in today. :) I would steer clear of the ACX 1.0, from what I read there are some issues with the heatsink that people didn't care for. http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/evga-geforce-gtx-970-acx-has-misaligned-gpu-vs-heatpipes.html The 2.0 has a different solid aluminum base. I ordered mine from Newegg yesterday and today they show out of stock. neuwb Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Ivy-bridge is already succeeded by haswell, there’s no reason to buy older tech. 32gb ram is a bit excessive, unless you need it outside of gaming (for specific programming or video editing tasks, etc.). Mainboard @300€+ is way to expensive, get one of these: https://techreport.com/review/27026/tr-september-2014-system-guide/3
Ashstomper Posted October 1, 2014 Author Posted October 1, 2014 Thanks for more info/ideas. The main reason I was thinking 32 GB RAM was because @ 8GB i was getting an "Out of memory error" if I had a browser open at the same time DCS was open. The thing that scared me about Haswell/2011-v3 is DDR4 is ridiculous right now. I'm going to fine tune my list some more and will report back. Thanks! :) New Rig: Win 7 Home, EVGA x99 Classified, i7-5820K, ZOTAC GTX 980 Amp! Ashstomper Posted October 1, 2014 Author Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) Hey all- Take a gander at this: Mobo: EVGA X99 Classified CPU i7-5820K CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4 2666 SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB Graphics: EVGA GTX 970 Core Clk-1190 And this is still a few hundred less than my above, first list. My first goal with this build is to make DCS run like glass. But more importantly, I want to make sure I can handle EDGE. ANd like I said before, I'm computer-less until I get the new machine built. No Flying, no DCS, No Mig-21... Sad, sad days. :/ Gonna be a long week and a half. neuwb Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Haswell-E and DDR4 aren't really worth it, personally I'd go with something like this: Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI CPU: i7-4790 Ram: Any bog-standard DDR3, 2*8gb sticks so you can upgrade later without an issue SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB GPU: EVGA GTX 970 PSU: Corsair RM or similar, 550W for single GPU, 750W for SLI If you want to overclock your cpu, get the i7-4790k version, but remember you'll need a proper custom cooler. Still, i7s are kinda overkill for gaming applications, so you can save some money and go with an i5. It's just a quick rundown from the top of my head, please check if these components work together properly before spending any money :)

fastfreddie Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 Just finished my built and I really wanted to go with the 970 but couldn't find any in stock. Went with the 980 which I figure will hold me over until some 4k card solutions are reasonable. I'd definitely would skip on the 780ti series now with the price and power consumption difference in the 970 series.
