EasyEB Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Hi all! I've run into this weird thing that keeps happening to me. It happens consistantly when I attack ground vehicles with the cannon. I loose my right wing, burn, crash, dead. That would be completely normal if I was taking fire, I am however not. Looking at the log it always says the same thing: AN/ALE-40V Right wing container failure and AN/AAR-7 sensor right failure. No logs of any enemy vehicles firing and watching the replay you can see them just sitting there, and I come in, start shooting and fall out of the sky :) This is happening consistantly and the log always looks the same. Any ideas to what is up or what I'm doing wrong? Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers!RightWingContainerFailure.trk
Mike Busutil Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I have not looked at the log file but I will guess you are over speeding and or pulling too many "G's" on your pullout and stressing the wing. Aginor Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Agree with Mike, that happened to me as well. When attacking in steep angles keep an eye on your speed and Gs. Can't check your track at the moment, I'm not at my DCS PC. DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
EasyEB Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Wow, that is weird. I've never had a wing break off during heavy maneuvering. I did try pushing it a bit just now and I am able to break the wing of pulling high G turns, but it's only in combination with firing the gun and it's always the right wing.
DrDetroit Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Same here...had the same wing break off twice in a row flying the same mission in the campaign Enemy Within...checked TacView for both instances and no ground fire. This was during the 3rd or 4th Enemy Within scenario (three SAM sites to kill), never had it happen before and doesn't happen all the time with that mission either. Never had it happen with any other mission, jut chalked it up to over-stressing an ageing air-frame or something. Good day! DrDetroit
DirtyFret Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Yeah I think the G's might be the reason. I watched the track and you pull 3-4 6G turns and the last one peaks at 6.7 G when the wing breaks off. Aginor Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 almost 7Gs with loads under the wing (or without)? That might break the aircraft. DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
Exorcet Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 How easily the wing breaks depends on load out too. If you're heavily loaded it's more likely to snap. EasyEB Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Oh, I see. Thanks guys, will try to take this into consideration :) I didn't think I was very heavily loaded, 2x GBU38 and 2X Mavs, 1x rockets and standard pods.
Sierra99 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Was there a written rule for G loading vs weight outboard of certain stations? PFunk1606688187 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Look at your G meter. You'll see four hash marks, two each for positive and negative Gs. Don't go above the nearer of the two and you should never have problems. Given how I see many people load their planes out (probably well above max take off weight) it wouldn't surprise me to see them lose a wing at less than the marked 7Gs. Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.
EasyEB Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 Well, as I said, the plane was far from max load. I've been trying to snap a wing of but have been unable to do so, unless it's in combination with firing the gun. It feels more like a bug to me.
PFunk1606688187 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Whats max load by your interpretation? Is it always the same load? Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.
EasyEB Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 You are right, my interpretation of max load is max takeoff load I guess. No, not always the same load.
EasyEB Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 I stand corrected! It has nothing to do with firing the gun. Now I absolutely made the plane as heavy as I could and put some g's to it, snapped the wing clean off. It seems as if the wing does not snap only by heavy g's, it seems as if it's dependant on how quickly those g's are applied to the wings. Thanks alot for your help guys! Sorry for beeing stubborn.
PFunk1606688187 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Real life Safe Escape Maneuvers dictate reaching 4Gs within 2 seconds. The assumption is you're not yanking to achieve that G instantaneously. Most times I've seen people lose wings when flying is a result of them over Ging during a SEM, and usually its to a ridiculously high degree. By the same token having pulled quite a few high Gs in my own time I have never lost one when reaching those Gs relatively smoothly. Still, all bets are off when going above ~7ish. Warning: Nothing I say is automatically correct, even if I think it is.
TIMBER SOUR Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 The requirement to achieve 4g in 2 seconds during a SEM is not to prescribe a maximum onset rate; there's no reason to delay your pull. It's there solely to define the MAXIMUM time allowed to achieve the MINIMUM g in order not to: 1) hit the ground, 2) frag yourself, 3) descend below the MIN ALT set in DSMS. If it takes you 3 seconds to establish 4g, you will do one of those three things. If it takes you 1 second to establish 3g, you will do one of those three things. You need to establish AT LEAST 4g within 2 seconds in orderfor the HUD abort cues to be valid. Also, there are symmetrical and asymmetrical (rolling) g limits associates with each store on each station. The information can be found in TO 1A-10-1-1 which is freely available on the interwebz. Look in the External Stores Limitations section. Finally, DCS severely undermodels the flight strength of the A-10 airframe. There is absolutely no reason for the wings to be separating at 7.5g...at an absolute minimum wings are stessed for 1.5 times the expected ultimate load. It's necessary to strictly adhere to the g limits marked on the accelerometer. Momentary excursions that would merely require a maintenance inspection in the real world, results in the wings falling off in DCS...

I've flown that mission like 10-times already, and that only happened twice in a row. The other 8-times, one of the three SAM sites got me instead. Like I said, I chalked it up to over-stressing too fast, too hard with too much weight on the wings. BTW: One heck of a campaign, I' loving it. Thank you for creating it and uploading...appreciated! Good day, DrDetroit
WR269 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Speaking of losing a wing....has anyone noticed that once your wing is gone, your payload is still there, hanging off an "invisible" wing which is no longer there? I got shot down by AAA and when I went to external view, my Mavericks and Bombs were still there, hanging off as if the wing was in place.

Yes, I've also noticed wingtip lights continue to flash when the tips are broken off. I can't really complain because the damage model is still the best I've seen in a combat sim, but it would be nice to see improvements.
