But isnt the Bis a post 'nam model?

Yes my bad, the Bis is a 1972 model, I could have sworn it was older...

Don't you mean you thought it was younger? Or are you confused about when the Vietnam war ended?

The Vietnam war ended in '75, meaning that if you thought it was a post-war model, you thought it was younger than it is.

so what is the F-20 tigershark as compared to the F-5 we are getting?

It has very little in common other than shape. The F-20 was such a huge upgrade it wasn't really an F-5 anymore.

Probably why it was named F-20! :D

Pretty different as said, the F-20 is single engined instead of twin. The other big change was the addition of radar guided missiles as standard. It also got the typical 4th gen cockpit update, so mostly glass instead of dials. Aerodynamically, they are pretty similar though. But then so is the F-18, which is another branch off the F-5 series. It's an interesting plane in that regard, the F-5 never really went away, it simply evolved little by little over the years until it had nothing in common with the original.

Only 2 built upgraded f-5, it's just a prototype aircraft with a good hearing callsign.

Compare with F-20, I'm prefer to x-29, another variant f-5, it also built 2 and much cool with forward swept wing, canards and fly by wire system.

The F-20 in my opinion was a potentially very capable 4th generation version of the F-5.

Nice link Cool Breeze, thank you for that one.

The F-20 seem to be very close to F-16C avionics wise, such a module would be very welcome.

The F-5E with the APQ-153 radar was used in the war by the South Vietnamese airforce.

What we are getting is equipped with the APQ-159 radar aswell as a better RWR system.

So this particular model / setup of F-5E did not see service.

But the difference is all in Avionics the flight performance is the same as a the earlier F-5E.

from what i can gather the F5E-1 which is what entered service in 1972, and also sold off to south vietnam didnt seem to have any sort of rwr system at all. just the apq-153 radar.

No, it doesn't.

Mig21bis has autopilot.

F100D super sabre which went into service in 1956 had autopilot, and basically just about every american fighter since then.

il have too rexamine the F5E manual, because I find it hard to believe that by the 70s, especially an all weather fighter from the 3rd generation ( even if its a plane aimed for export) would actually lack any sort of autopilot function
