Regarding the aircraft visibility and EDs decision to not use smart scaling, Matt talks about an icon that makes the aircraft more visible at range but I don't think the main issue has been how far away you see the bandit, the problem is rather to do with the disappearing act they do at around 2-3nm. I would have liked to of heard if that has been addressed.

 

What you are talking about more sounds like LOD issues maybe, but also, if you mean the plane blending into the back ground, thats going to improve with better graphics, better colours, better contrast, etc.

Thanks for the updates, I'm really looking forward to the launch of DCS 2.0.

The size of those maps is a bit of a concern for those of us with poor internet. 24GB! Maybe having an option to be able to buy a physical copy could be an option.

It's not like you have to download every time you load up :) It's a one time download, just put it on overnight

That part, saying that in current form the black sea map doesn't receive callable trees just made my day sad, as I am not anymore waiting DCS 2.0 then anymore. Maybe when the mentioned re-visited (upgraded) map in future is it then the freeware or payable (I don't care) means I will be happy at that day then.

 

As a DCS current problem just is that it is totally unrealistic to helicopter pilots, CAS pilots and ground units, so basically everything that has nothing to do with the SAM/AAA or so on.

You mean something like this:

Q1: Will the ATC system be revamped?

A: Yes, Wags worked with both an F-18 and F-15 pilot to create a more realistic ATC system that is being implemented now. Different landings (emergency, break etc), frequencies, start-up controllers and wingmen. Focus of the team right now.

Q2. Will NTTR trees have collisions? How will they be handled?

A. Yes, with a single rectangular trunk polygon being solid. Whole forests (rather than urban trees that are more individually placed I guess) are still being worked on and might be done after launch though. Performance is important for this part.

Q3. What is the weather engine and what's due to be improved?

A. More realistic weather! Nicer clouds, dynamic high/low pressure systems. Support for turbulence, especially around mountains for updrafts etc.

Q4. How many more countries are being added to the Mission Editor?

A. A pretty extensive list of new countries will be shown in the stream, e.g. Iran, UAE etc. Many are placeholders rather than having skins/units done so far.

Q5. Will we see special target units on the NTTR?

A. Not really units, but the satellite terrain does have range/circles to use. The map will be hopefully expanded after release to include some more detailed around NTTR and the surrounding range and airports.

Q6. Size on disk of NTTR map?

A. About 26GB (twenty six, the previous 46GB quoted was an error) for Nevada (Editor: so with DCS 1.0 full at about 27GB, buy stock in SSD makers)

Q7. Possible to fly multiple players in one package, plus AI take the lead?

A. Yes! In multiplayer the player doesn't need to be lead. Can be any member of the four-ship with an AI lead. Great for datalink systems and more realistic sharing.

Q8. What is the model vis option for? Is the 'smart scaling' (called 'Model Visibility' in the config of DCS 2) a LOD system of seeing aircraft closer (as an option)?

A. Not really model scaling, it's more just an icon that scales. When an object goes to a single pixel, say, this icon helps other aircraft visibility (if that option is on, it's optional). Great for the WWII aircraft.

Q9. Will the existing free Black Sea/Caucasus map have collisions on trees?

A. Unlikely, no. That map may be redone and released in the future though (either free or payware). The map is being improved in terms of textures plus in the future improve the mesh, objects and range, e.g. the Crimea.

Q10. Any sound engine improvements in 2.0?

A. Yes, a new API is being worked on, including position info for 3rd party and mod makers so that it is easy to use. Cleaner separation of sound and game logic, which helps performance.

Sure, but I didn't really wait improved mesh or higher texture resolution for some parts of the maps.

 

As right now controlling AA ground units, flying CAS in A-10C or Su-25T or flying helicopter (KA-50, Mi-8, UH-1 and in future Mi-24P and AH-1W) is more like a billiard board roleplaying where you know the engagement ranges and stay out of those and you are fine.

I haven't used Combined Arms module much because you are so easy target to everything that is flying unless you sit behind a big building. And while flying low, you can't have cover from forests or trees as everything shoots at you if you are on the range.

 

Just alone DCS would change so much (radically I would say) if current map (that would had more benefits vs desert) would have just the trees improved. Like I know that without it the coming F/A-18 module will suffer a lot from its ground radar feature when it doesn't work correctly.

 

So I just hope they really do revisit as soon as possible the map and improve its trees and adds lots of bushes/forests where should be to make it more interesting.

Fully agree, as a combat map the current map is way better than nevada theatre. Im sure the version 2.0 of current map will be a god send with collidable trees, that being one of the biggest benefits for us low flying hogs and or Heli guys.

So does it work like the current label mods where its a tiny dot?

Does that mean you can see the dots behind obstructions and through the plane or is there occlusion?

Long time ago I remember that map tools was to be given, o far I can't see them.

Probably because they might have plans for that area for the future according to Matt's latest stream...
