Cowboy10uk Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 Hi guys, I've been running a 680 4gb OC for a few years now, and while I'm still able to play most things on max at around 30fps with no issues, but of course, computer tech moves on and I've not really been following it. I'm considering getting the commercial version of the Rift or change my monitors to a single 4K TV, but I'm aware this will likely reduce my FPS quite a bit. I'm just wondering if there's any new GPUS out there that you could recommend upgrading to. I have a budget of £600, so while I'm aware there's no chance of getting a Titan of any of the super GPUS, is there anything that will provide significantly better FPS than the 680. Not sure it's worth spending the money just to gain a small increase. My PC specs are in the signature below. Luftwoller Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 IMO the best performance/ value card at the moment for the sort of cash your reckoning is the GTX 980. They are in the £500 mark, going up some and down some, depending on manufacturer. Read the specs and you'll see for your self, ...Guy Helicopters!! Never trust anything that screws itself into the air!
SharpeXB Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 A 4K display will require a very powerful GPU like a 980Ti or TitanX So if you're on a budget it might be better to try a lower resolution. i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
Apache600 Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I'm with SharpeXB on this one. I am running a 780 (6gb) and was really considering a 4k monitor. But the reality is, is that if i got it, i couldn't run it at max graphics. So i got a 32in 2k monitor. I couldn't be happier. Cibit Posted July 28, 2015 Posted July 28, 2015 I have hijacked my son's PC while my dead waterpump replacement arrives. Going to his 970GTX from my 580 is worlds apart. Not the fastest but its the first time I have got 100+FPS with everything maxxed out in DCS and that was running a generated mission with all the units maxxed too:) Sorry I am impressed and get carried away;) i5 8600k@5.2Ghz, Asus Prime A Z370, 32Gb DDR4 3000, GTX1080 SC, Oculus Rift CV1, Modded TM Warthog Modded X52 Collective, Jetseat, W10 Pro 64 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Adding JTAC Guide //My Vid's//229th AHB
T_A Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 This isn't a great time for PC Upgraders. current high end CPU`s (Intel Devil Canyon) are about a year old , but Skylake is out next month so those people in the market for a new CPU can wait a bit. for GPUs its worse , new GPU`s (Nvidia series 1000 and next AMD series X400) are not due for another 6 months. at the moment Nvidia`s Maxwell (980 series) is already a year old, and the new Fury from AMD isn't so great either. if you`r buying something for the long term (3-4 years) than wait 6 months, you`r current card is good enough and with DCS 1.5+ it will have better performance. FraserNZL Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 im looking at a 980ti for the rift but they're 1400 here in NZ so im hoping my 2 6704gb will be enough to get me thru till i have enough money saved. Bloody life keeps sucking i out of me.

Cowboy10uk Posted September 14, 2015 Author Posted September 14, 2015 Cheers for the replys guys, sorry for late reply, got sent away for work. :) I'm currently leaning towards the 980TI, while I am tempted to wait for the Pascals to appear if I'm realistic, they will be bloody hard to get hold of for at least the first 6 months, so I'm looking at least another 12 months before realistically getting my hands on one. While I do love my 680 4GB and to be honest it is running DCS fine at 5670 x 1080, no idea of frame rates but it's smooth, which is all I can hope for. She is slowing down on some of the latest games. As 2K TVs are getting quite cheap in price I'm thinking the best solution may be going for a large screen 42" or above 2K TV and the 980TI. Looking about I can pick up a 980TI for £560 and then another couple days OT will cover the cost of the TV hopefully. That should hopefully allow me to keep running in high to max settings for the next few years at least. Well that's the current plan anyway. ;) Cowboy10uk [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Fighter pilots make movies, Attack pilots make history, Helicopter pilots make heros. :pilotfly: Corsair 570x Crystal Case, Intel 8700K O/clocked to 4.8ghz, 32GB Vengeance RGB Pro DDR4 3200 MHZ Ram, 2 x 1TB M2 drives, 2 x 4TB Hard Drives, Nvidia EVGA GTX 1080ti FTW, Maximus x Hero MB, H150i Cooler, 6 x Corsair LL120 RGB Fans And a bloody awful Pilot
AussieFX Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Seeing as though you said you're playing the latest games and having trouble I would hold off a month or so and see what happens with DX12. Initial benchmarking of DX12 is showing Nvidia cards are actually running slower than in DX11. It's only one benchmark so far but I would wait and see if there is a trend. There are a couple of DX12 games about to be released so we should have direction very soon. That initial test is surprisingly showing the 390X to be the best card, not Fury. If you're only playing DCS then the 980Ti would be the best choice as it's the fastest DX11 card. I don't include Titan because on price/performance alone, all it's good for is a new Ferrari for the CEO. If you want more info, google Async Compute as that appears to be at the heart of the DX12 problem.

T_A Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Unfortunately Pascal seems even further than i believe a few months ago when i wrote in this thread. release dates are rumored at Q2 2016, long way off. i decided not to wait and bought GTX 980 , it quite an upgrade from my 280X the 980Ti is a great choice , i would get an aftermarket air cooled one, dont think the water cooled ones are worth it. Cowboy10uk Posted September 17, 2015 Author Posted September 17, 2015 Well, I finally jumped. After reading several very good reviews I finally decided on the Inno3D 890TI hybrid black edition, a factory overclocked air AND water cooled card. Now all installed and did a quick fps test in DCS world. On A10C, instant flight, easy mission I was getting around 35 - 45fps at 5670 x 1080 with my 680 4GB, with the 980TI, and the same settings this jumped to 80 - 100 fps, so pretty much a 50% increase in frames. Just for a laugh, I then maxed out all settings in the graphical options to see what this card could do, while the frame rate did drop quite a bit as to be expected, it sat at 60fps with the same instant flight mission. Again it's a good increase compared to what I was getting. So damn I'm happy, while it was an expensive card £569.99. Damn it was worth it. Hopefully I don't regret not waiting for Pascal, but as there's no real eta for the cars, and it normally takes a good 6 months after release for them to start becoming avalible to the public, I decided it was worth jumping now. Thanks for all the advice guys.
