Important to know is that if you reach a forward speed (when coming to a stop) less than 40kts, a "vortex ring" can pull you downwards. With a crash as a result.

So, keep an eye on (all instruments, but in particular) the vertical speed ánd the airspeed indicator. When you approach the landing zone and you're about to slow down below that 40kts, gently pull up the collective to eliminate the possibility of a sudden drop.

If you raise the nose (even slightly) during a hover, you'll go backwards.

Yup, I had a great deal of trouble with that transition/vortex thing with the Huey. As CiBit suggests keep your VSI between 0 and 5 m/s and be ready to haul up on the collective before you sink through the hole and crash. Watching the VSI is vital... I also found that a certain amount of forward speed and a circle into the landing area helps; it eases you through the transition spot with less pain until you have a handle on it and can then land from a hover. This to me though is what makes the Huey such a joy. :) Winged pilots eat your heart out :)

Really enjoying the Huey, its such a challenge. I have landed a few times but not consistently. I have a tendency to pull back on the cyclic when its sinking but I suppose this is the worst thing to do? Should I just keep the cyclic level ?

In real life you feel the movements of heli but in sim you don't feel these movements. For hover I will advise to fix a point on ground and keep looking to that point. My 2nd option will be which I think is more effective is fly near a building and just look at the building you will be hover without knowing that you actually hover or same goes with any ground vehicle.

I find that using the cyclic depends on the position of the Huey with relation to the landing spot... you certainly don't want to be pulling back on the cyclic to far as approach touch down unless you are using it to back your speed off, then level off or you will be taking the rear rotor off! It also depends if you are using any trim... some pilots seldom if ever use trim; I must admit I use it quite a lot... so my cyclic is almost in a center position when I land; unless I need to do a small correction to re-position over the landing spot. Really... it all comes down to 'feel' and practice, practice, practice :) As you get better at it and the 'feel' improves you can start to take liberties... :)

Very true... I have a 10cm ext tube on my HOTAS Warthog stick. You can also play with curves in the controller settings to shallow out the stick reaction... although at the moment I don't use any.

Since flying DCS I have badgered several different people who are pilots to come to take a flight and give me feedback. I had a gentleman who was a Huey pilot during Vietnam here once

and he said that this is why most pilots cannot get the hang of flight sims readily. I would think that this has to be true.:pilotfly:

And to prove that out...it's **SO** much easier to land with Oculus Rift that it's not even funny.
