Basically my graphics card (AMD Radeon 6870) died just after installing DCS World 2 and I am thinking of upgrading it to a gtx 970. My question is however, what version should I get? I think it will be a large boost in terms of performance compared to my old card no matter what but I want this upgrade to last a while. At the minute, I am considering the ASUS or the Gigabyte version, but I am not sure. I have heard MSI has issues with no backplate, and EVGA has cooling issues and coil whine? I would love some advice please! Thank you!

Just bought an MSI GTX980 today. The card is super fast and quiet, so I'd check what the reviewers say about their 970 if I were you. Anyway, this card seems great at any rate.

The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.

1080p then the 970, any one is perfect. Get the cheapest you can get. Consider a blower fan design if your case airflow isn't great or if temps are an issue. Most 970's will overclock to 980 levels. Even at 1440p resolutions the 970 handles DCS very well.

I have EVGA 970, no issues here, but admittedly it is only days old. I run DCS2 basically maxxed out at 1440p 60 FPS.

Awaiting: DCS F-15C

I have two EVGA GTX 970 SSCs in SLI and love them. I run a 4K monitor and a 1080P touchscreen for my instruments. Runs like a champ. Getting 70-120 FPS in DCS 2. Had them since around April and no problems.

neither 970 version. they are falsely advertised as 4gb cards but have only 3.5gb usable ram and really slow down if you exceed 3.5gb.

Look at a gt 980 at least that has the amount of VRAM it supposed to have, or perhaps consider looking at the AMD 300 series.

AMD made a especially innovative card with thier enthusiast sieres the FURY series. with new HBM (stacked) vRam tech.

its supposed to compete with the 980 and Titan and is cheaper than Latter.

Your right about the VRAM but if you simply look at it as a 3.5GB card is still the best performing for the money on the market. And you can get two for about the price of one 980. And two 970s are much better than one 980...In SLI I can run any game on the market in full 4K with FPS over 60...

I have been running EVGA cards for years, and love them - never had an issue with any of them to date.

Currently I run the EVGA GTX 970 FTW. It runs DCS 2.0 beautifully on my system.

I had thought about not long ago upgrading to a 980 Ti, but decided the improvement would not be great enough to justify the cost. However seeing the comments on 970 in sli, I am actually thinking about adding another 970 FTW to run SLI.

Personally current Gen cards don't warrant upgrade Imo if you have current Gen cards.

I am much more interested what next Gen cards will offer.

For many generations cards have been on 26 nm achitdcture for many years now. Next Gen we will see 20 possibly below that number. And that means more power dye to smaller builds as well as cooler running.

AMD already has their enthusiast fury card with hbm vram. Stacked memory. It's interesting if nvidia will adopt this tech with 2016 cards too. And it's interesting what "mainstream" 2nd Gen hbm will bring with amd 400 series. Not just the enthusiast grade fury series.

This is especially neat because a single Amd fury can run 4k games at ultra setting and still get 60 fps

Personally I'd wait till mid 2016 for these cards. Next generation cards hold much more potential for significant improvement much more than the difference between nvidia 700- 900 series or amd 200-300 series

I am excited to see the new Nvidia Pascal cards...16GB of memory and 1TB of Bandwidth! We will likely see some crazy performance!

I just bought the ASUS STRIX GTX 970 OC and I HIGHLY!! recommend it. It's already overclocked but after reading some reviews I was able to push the boost clock from 1253HHz to 1400 MHz and the memory clock from 7010MHz to 7800MHz. The card dose get quiet hot even at idle but the fan speed can be adjusted with the tweak tool from ASUS or the good ole EVGA tweak tool. The fan and cooling system on the STRIX appears to be very well designed with solid parts. In the end there all GTX 970, some have better cooling or slightly higher clock but its still the same chip under the hood. just my 2 cents :smilewink:

Nah, the 390 costs the same and performs a little better than the 970.

I am sure his MSI card will be very good!

I agree with you wholeheartedly though, EVGA's customer support is unbelievable.

The support from EVGA regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty. It is their support that won me over as a loyal customer years ago, and it continues on.

Those guys definitely know how to treat and win over customers.

Hi Goldsmack, how many fps can you get with gtx970?

Hey sorry for late reply depends on the game and if im running full over clock. NTTR with everything maxed out gets a solid 60fps, over the Vegas strip 40-50. Over clocked....I get like 90-100fps in some situations on the ground but the card gets to 200 degrees

see sig for specs

i get "good" FRs but.. also "it depends"

yeah, i get 60fps over vegas ----- if i'm over ~3k ft MSL

if i get lower - i get stuttering ---- in fact, i'm kinda fine if i just keep looking straight ahead

but zooming in just-a-bit.. and i get stutters

low-alt, looking out to the sides, zoom in 1/4 to 1/2 way - stutters

zoom in all the way - not so much a problem

so....... i wish i didn't have ANY problems whatsoever, but i can't actually say that

I'm running two ASUS GTX 970's STRIX in SLI, runs DCS like a champ at all maxed out settings on 4K.

I actually only meant to get one. But the card I ordered was back filled after I bought it so I called Newegg and cancelled and bought it from another source. Of course within 24 hours both cards had shipped.

When I looked at my computer, it said "put it in me", so like any good red blooded Murrican I put both cards in in SLI. Better than an entry level Titan for most games. Although sadly I rarely ever play games these days. I mostly decided to keep both cards so I could run much larger deep-learning neural networks.
