Ok, i have no clue of what happend, why did my engine catch fire?

Bird strike?

It was slow to start up, but otherwise it worked normal

Random system failures are off

Wait for youtube to render it, then it will be in 1080p

yeah, me too.

just thought that i would be able to spot a bird, but again i was focused on speed, altitude and the runway.

AFAIK bird strikes are calculated on a probability basis, however there is no graphical representation of birds, yet.

(Gulls or some such do appear in the NTTR map, but I don't know if they're collideable and whether they're able to cause an engine fire. Prior to NTTR, to the best of my knowledge there simply were no visible birds in DCS).

UFO? I wouldn't be too concerned unless Scully & Mulder show up at your doorstep. :music_whistling:

I don't need no stinkin' GPS! (except for PGMs :D) :pilotfly:

I'd say bird strike, i had that happen on the F99th server one day right after takeoff, got spooled up, less than 1000m after takeoff my left engine caught fire and i had to turn around and land.

BTW, IIRC one of the A-10 books, in real life the bird strikes are rarely a problem for the Hogs due to the way the engines are built. Then again, I may remember it wrong.

entirely possible, but I would think even a slight power loss would occur if a bird went through the intake fan... but then again, I've never flown a real life A-10C or hit a bird for that matter...

Can't find the info I was referring to, but that reminded me of a popular joke about the speed of A-10C's that bird strikes from the rear can be a serious problem for a Hog during flight :)

Well, it depends on several factors, one of the most important ones is size.

An A-10 engine may just swallow a single sparrow (the bird, not the missile) and spit it out in shreds, staying full operational.

When ingesting a canada goose the result may be different though. Or if it is a swarm of sparrows.

Such things are tested on engines, btw.

This video shows it, at the end (1:00):

I'd love to hear some more info on that, a 737 engine usually gets completely ruined after a bird strike, and the A-10's engine is even smaller :joystick:

I will try to find it, pretty sure I read it somewhere.

Bird Strikes would do damage...

Windows 10 Pro, Ryzen 2700X @ 4.6Ghz, 32GB DDR4-3200 GSkill (F4-3200C16D-16GTZR x2),

ASRock X470 Taichi Ultimate, XFX RX6800XT Merc 310 (RX-68XTALFD9)

3x ASUS VS248HP + Oculus HMD, Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + MFDs

Definitely. The question is: How severe would that damage be, depending on the size of the bird and the situation. If there are just a few dents on one or two blades the engine might still work properly. If blades are gone there will be more problems. Pretty sure that would cause an engine fire, since those blades damage the other stages.

btw: Here is a nice site with examples of damage by bird strikes:

Damage really depends on the bird and the speed the aircraft was flying. I've seen the aftermath of a big seagull getting ingested in Hawk's engine just after takeoff: no damage to the engine, just a bloody mess in the jet pipe. They borescoped the engine afterwards and verified that there was no damage inside, either.

Only visible damage was a bent AOA sensor in the nose. Apparently the bird had hit there first and got sliced apart, before going through the engine. They found one of the bird's wings on the runway and it was around 40-50cm long. So that's a big bird. That AOA sensor would have caused much more damage if it had broken off. All the plane required was an engine wash and it was back in duty.

in this video an A10c got hit by a missile. He lost a good amount of his wing. The engine sucked up all the debris from the wing, and many shrapnels from the missile without breaking:

EDIT: dont look at the Video thumbnail its actually a real story not DCS^^
