HI all,

There are no glider simulators out there beside Condor which old now.

How about creating some gliders to fly in the Nevada map?

Anyone up for the task?? :)

I think that it depends whether the weather engine is up to it. I don't know the details of the DCS engine, but for gliders you need a much more powerful engine than for fighter jets. It needs to simulate ridge lift, thermals, etc. etc. etc. to make it enjoyable and allow the pilot to stay in the air. I agree, gliders would be awesome, and especially for the Caucasus.

yeah - without thermals its a bit of a bust.

Heres a great glider sim though.... graphics are the pits but the thermal modelling is amazing

OP already mentioned that one.

Here another one:

Not so bad iirc, its been a long time since i tried it the last time, graphics are nothing special though.

But anyway. Interesting thought. Gliders in DCS is not a bad idea! :)

Thanks Guys in participating in the discussion.

I think it would be an awesome idea.

At least it will generate so much interest worldwide since there are really no gliding simulators out there. Condor, silent wings etc are all outdated and so very old school.

This is probably more work than modeling a glider itself.

In a combat sim? Maybe the towable for WWII would be cool.

Besides... we have seagull gliders already in 2.0

100% it's more difficult than modelling the glider itself. But then again, once it would be done, you could fly along the ridge on a windy day in a MiG-21 on idle :) These things don't just work for gliders :)

I like the notion of a glider in a combat environment. It displays a peace prospect. I wouldn't mind gliding in DCS.

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.

There is no question that a more detailed air current model would have interesting effects on all aircraft. The cost/benefit ratio is the root of whether it would be worth the effort.

Well tbh modelling thermals, wave lift, ridge lift etc would be great anyways - it adds to turbulence adding to the flight sim aspect of DCS - then it would be good to see some gliders. However, I can't imagine ED making a module out of it :(

Nice necro. Still, after 8 years, DCS lacks atmospheric effects needed, so... just turn the engines off for now.

Actually, for WWII, you don't need thermals. Those were towed to the release point and just glided down to the target area. They didn't need to go very far. It'd be nice to have them as AI, or as "payloads" for towing with a Bf-109.
