trigen Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 No complaints, actually had me wondering about getting the s6 as it's on sale with the gear vr included hah. But that would be the cost of the HTC vive when you include the phone plan so I'll wait a bit. I just used my opentrack/clip as the gyros tend to drift a bit on my old phone. Worked great too. Sadly my tab s is to big for this. WiFi was running at 600ish 1080 ti, i7700k 5ghz, 16gb 3600 cl14 ddr4 oc
Zorro Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 (edited) A lot of choices with routers, what specs do I look for? Aries, I think you are on to something that may be bigger than expected. This guy prefers gear VR over Oculus DK-2. [ame] [/ame] Edited January 30, 2016 by Zorro

wormeaten Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Of course he does... It's all about resolution Not just in resolution. More important aspect is PPI. DK1 was around 300ppi, DK2 is around 400ppi what was effecting with less screen door effect. Samsung have 530ppi what make screen door effect less noticeable comparing it with DK2. So even if you set up same resolution as DK2 (2x 960x1080) picture will be better because this difference in ppi (400 vs 530). [ame] [/ame]
SkateZilla Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 (edited) lol, I got like 3 of the $15 HMD shrouds for Phones now off ebay. since they use phone for 3DoF, Its fun to watch the #360 videos on my phones etc. and movies.. So, my experiment, buy a 1440p screen and MiPI board, mount it in the shroud, and then apply some Reflective IR spots to the casing. No more streaming game from PC to phone latency, 6DoF tracking, and 1440p screen. All for $279+$16+$5 :) Screen, Shroud, IR/Reflective Dot Stickers. wormeaten Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 This is questionable because just screen and mipi board cost more than LG G3. Is the benefit from direct HDMI connection that big so this will worth bodering?

Zorro Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 (edited) The new Oculus CV-1 is expensive. Be great to DIY something as good or better for less. The Oculus DV-2 has a Samsung Note 3 screen over clocked to 75hz. So basically it is a headset with a phone screen in it. The CV-1 has a screen at 90 hz. So, phone screen, headset, overclocked screen 75+ hz, and a bit of head tracking and Bob's your uncle. This thread is an important one for DIY VR. Edited February 8, 2016 by Zorro
j0nx Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 How do you get any of this to work. The minute i put it in the gear vr it launches the oculus home and the intugame disappears. I tried trinusvr with the cardboard and as soon as the phone goes in it disconnects. There's something in the cardboard which senses the phone and constantly disconnects it. Aries Posted February 13, 2016 Author Posted February 13, 2016 I first run Intugame on PC, then connect the phone to WiFi in the network range where the PC is. Then I launch Intugame Gear VR on the phone and it asks me to place the phone into the Gear VR headset. I put it in and trigger the proximity sensor by nearing my forehead to the VR helmet and then the Intugame circle in the taskbar on the PC turns from grey to green... Sometimes Oculus jumps in if you don't do it right but then I pull the phone out, close all apps and repeat the procedure... After that it works great... Jacks Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I am thinking of buying a Samsung Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge (unsure which one at the moment) and it will come with a free Gear VR headset. Could anyone please answer the following questions: Will my setup be man enough to run it at highish settings? What refresh rate will I need? What resolution does it run at? Is the 3D worth using? Can the phone be tethered to the PC rather than wifi streaming? I use my wifi to play online and so I am worried about using it for VR streaming at the same time and latency issues. Can the 3dof of the phone and trackir be used to create a one:one 6dof system? I was thinking of using the VR 3dof for rotation and trackir for position but can't think of a way to get around the trackir not seeing the IR markers when looking over my shoulder. j0nx Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 I got it running kinda sorta with cardboard and intugame but it was very very slow over 600mbit wifi. There was no way to tether it with USB in the Gear VR because when the phone is snapped into the Gear the USB plug is used by Gear and the plug on the bottom of the Gear is not a passthru to the phone which I thought it was so if you're using the Gear then you definitely need at least a 1200AC wifi. There's no stereoscopic 3D anyway and there was no head movement at all for me even with mouse movement clicked in DCS. Needless to say I never got it working and gave up after about an hour of messing with it. Jacks Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 So I would need to buy a new router and a new wifi adapted for my PC? This is starting to sound expensive. Jateu Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 Not quite. If you have a a wifi card in your pc you will be able to connect directly to your pc using a virtual router one target pc. This will not only decrease to latency but also improve the stability of connection.
Aginor Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 (edited) Soo.... If I use the following setup: - GearVR (not connected to the phone, as if it was a google cardboard) - my normal TrackIr, so no head tracking from the phone needed, so no lag here, and I don't need to connect the phone with the GearVR - "Moonlight" App (reportedly works via usb) just for streaming the DCS Video to the Gear, probably with much less lag than Wifi (NVIDIA GeForce Experience needed) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.limelight http://oddsheepgames.com/?topic=moonlight-rendering-through-usb-tethering [ame] [/ame] Do you think that will work? I have bought a Galaxy S7 and will get the GearVR for free, which is why I am asking. I am not _that_ much of a VR enthusiast but if it doesn't cost anything I will give it a try. :) Edited March 6, 2016 by Aginor DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
Aginor Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 Arr... Launching Gamestream causes a BSOD every time. Dammit. DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
Aginor Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 (edited) At least got the Moonlight app for Gamestream working now. Not over USB yet but over Wifi, and it seems latency is pretty low at the moment (5GHz router). Haven't tried HiRes stuff yet though, so might be worse in DCSW. It seems that every time I use more than one monitor I get a BSOD when using either Shadowplay or Gamestream. Weird. I am trying this on my Desktop PC with a GTX 770 (a bit weak for VR, I know). It will probably work better on my Laptop since I have a GTX 970 there, we will see Next steps: - Try Moonlight via USB to reduce latency if it gets worse with HiRes stuff. - Wait for Samsung Gear to arrive - configure DCSW to run in side by side 3d (no clue how yet, but I guess there is some tutorial about that already) Edited March 7, 2016 by Aginor DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
Aries Posted March 10, 2016 Author Posted March 10, 2016 I wrote some on Stereo 3D with Gear VR in this thread... it halves the used ingame res... better without it... maybe someone can make it better with more fiddling... Aginor Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 My GearVR arrived today. Neat. I tested it a bit, but it seems something is incompatible now, I get audio via Moonlight, but no video. Not sure if the updates on my phone or the ones of my graphics card are at fault. I'll try some stuff and report back. :) DCSW weapons cheat sheet speed cheat sheet
KillarZ Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 (edited) How do you get any of this to work. The minute i put it in the gear vr it launches the oculus home and the intugame disappears. I tried trinusvr with the cardboard and as soon as the phone goes in it disconnects. There's something in the cardboard which senses the phone and constantly disconnects it. How did you end up bypassing the Gear VR home screen? I'm having this same problem. Every time I plug it up, it goes directly to the home screen. EDIT: Okay, I managed to get it to work. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. In order to get pass the Samsung VR software you simply can't let the connector on the headset connect to the phone's micro usb. I avoided this proble by pushing the usb connecter on the headset to the large size "position A" so that the usb pins won't actually connect to the phone. As a first Impression here are my Pros and Cons after about 10mins of play. Pros: -Has a lot of potential for a cheaper replacement to the oculus rift - Has really nice graphics in the Ultra setting, however, even then some gauges are a bit blurry to me Cons: -Because I had to ensure the phone didn't connect to the micro usb on the gear VR, it wasn't secure in the headset and moved around a bit -Possibly because phone wasn't secure, the head position in game wasn't calibrated correctly (if I looked forward, it wouldn't be looking directly forward in game) -Motion Sickness ( I do not own track ir and I am not used to using my head to look around in game, also because of the lag and poor quality picture.) - As mentioned earlier in the thread, there is no 3d depth -Graphics aren't crisp (Some of the guages and are blurry to me) - Phone can get hot over a long period of use Conclusion: While I may have listed a lot more cons than pros, I strongly do believe that apps like this in the future will make virtual reality cheap and feasible for everyone to enjoy. I believe the motion sickness would be far less if I was streaming from a usb and the head position was calibrated better. This may be fixed after some more tweaking. If this app was made specifically for the Samsung VR and was avialable in the Oculus store, it could work a lot more fluidly. For one, I would not have to bypass the Gear VR menu. Two, I would be able to stream using usb. Three, I am sure you would be able to get a crisp 3d depth working And Four, I would be able to use the headset buttons to control the mouse in game. Ideal for clicking buttons in the cockpit. In conclusion, I feel that as the technology progresses and more apps become available, this may be an ideal solution for VR gaming. These are just my first thoughts on this, and I too will do tweaking as there may be fixes to all of the cons I have listed above. Edited March 27, 2016 by KillarZ
Aries Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 Sorry... which software did you use? I somehow can't see it in your short review... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] ...the few, the proud, the remaining...
Aries Posted May 4, 2016 Author Posted May 4, 2016 Today I used a different approach... I disabled the mouse input from Intugame Gear VR (set it to 0 sensitivity) and used FacetrackNoIR with point tracker plugin all the way for 6DOF. Had to set up my Delan Clip pointing backwards on my headset (yes, IR leds facing into the space behind me) and position the PS3Eye behind my chair to look at my head's back. All this is needed because if IR clip is facing front, by turning your headset left the GearVR covers the IR leds and the camera can't see them... After some fiddling with inverting the X, Y, Z and Pitch, Yaw, Roll inputs in FaceTrackNoIR and setting all curves to 1:1 movement (if input is 50 you set it to result with same output value on curve graph), the result is a totally enjoyable 6DOF DCS VR experience...
