Hi there,

I 've been wondering for some time about the TGP in DCS, mainly because in many cases it seems to be quite useless. I mean it's very hard to spot "warm" targets with cluttered background, be it BHOT or WHOT.

being an ex tank commander I've been dealing with a variety of thermal imaging devices and in R/L "warm" objects "pop up" against the background and are much MUCH more easy to spot.

is this a bug in DCS or is it intentional?

Yea, there have been a few threads about this and it got moved to wishlist for some reason. The mods told us that ED is aware and investigating. There are also 3rd party fixes around... but I am personally waiting to get back into the A10 until this is actually fixed.

This bug has been very frustrating. There are areas on the Black Sea map that are TGP-unusable.

Right now the uselessness of the TGP makes me use labels otherwise I wouldn't be able to locate any targets at all...:'(

Option one: Install Bartheks amazing ground texture mod. I've only used it for 2 or 3 missions so far, but it looks awesome and also fixes (or at least alleviates) the TGP problem.

Option two: Edit one tiny value in the right file and it goes back to how it looked in 1.2.

Today's patch didn't mention any of this, it probably takes a while longer for ED to address this issue.

Changelog doesn't mention anything about it so I guess they haven't figured it out yet

Thanks Yurgon, but wouldn't the texture mod interfere with the new ground texture introduced in DCS 1.5.xxx openbeta?

It doesn't and it looks better than vanilla. Easy to install or replace, I highly recommend that you use it!

I too have Barthek's mod installed and it works beautifully. Without it the campaign is no fun at all, imho of course.

Dloaded and installed the mod and it's great and all but it hardly improves the TGP's visability mainly with cluttered backgrounds such as cities and vagatation :(

Have you manually edited the terrain files and adjusted the noise as stated in the instructions?

I use snapviews to make mfcd's fullscreen. Should work quite well even on 24".

It's good to know I'm not alone in this. I was flying the third mission yesterday (the first combat patrol mission), and ended up having to use labels in order to find the enemy... and even then it was very difficult to spot them on the TGP.

Looking forward to this bug being fixed, as there's no way this is realistic, at least based on footage I've seen.

Related to this, can you guys also confirm that the TGP marker has disappeared in the TAD since 1.5 became available?

This also makes using of the TGP more difficult for me. I can't confirm anymore that I'm looking at the correct location on the map.

Yurgon, your terrain noise reduction mod is very helpful btw!

Hmmm, I'd swear I didn't have that diamond in the TAD for a while now. I'm not at my flight sim rig at the moment, but I'll check when I get back home this evening and post a pic.

Perhaps I'll have to do a repair or check without any mods activated. Although I have very little running now with 1.5.2.

Thanks for replying!

related to the ground mod topic:

After I installed the ground mod I noticed that the trees are being "placed" on surfaces very close to my plane. Even though I took the ingame tree visibility knob to the max and visibility range is on "ULTRA".

is it the mod or was it always like this?

Better post that question in Barthek's mod thread.

And supply a screen shot to show what you mean. Cause I'm not sure I understand. Is it related to the tree shadows?

EDIT: ah, you mean they become visible only at close range? That should not be the case for the max settings...
