interesting

Looks like Rift with a webcam or phone mounted to the side, and a green screen passthrough filter.

From the way I read the description, he put together this video to show people what the VR experience is like, not that it works this way in gameplay.

It's hard to explain what it's like to be immersed in a game, but this illustrates the point quite nicely.

He Greenscreened himself in Post Production

For anyone wondering what it is like to race in the Oculus Rift or VR in general, Marcel Pfister has posted a video he made over on YouTube, using a green screen and an Oculus Rift. Marcel’s exercise has resulted in a mixed reality video which gives everyone a realistic idea of what it is like to use a VR headset and actually find yourself in the car!

Whatever the details are of how it was done. it achieved the intended purpose quite well. I want to give it a watch on the big screen later.

All ya'll that are freakin' out better get your rift or vive on order ASAP because they're already way backordered and it's only going to be worse once more people try it.

Impressive.

Yes I would agree about ordering now - I preordered at the end of Jan, just got an email saying delivery mid to end of July.

Green screen. How this work? How come he can see his arms in the video using VR?

He can't. Just the viewer can. It's post production. Trying to give people an impression of what VR is like.

The vive should be able to do this with it's camera if someone writes a program to do it on the fly.

It would render the game only over the green cloth. So you would be able to see your hands as well as the rest of the world. You wouldn't be so blind that way. I think that would be a much more enjoyable way to use VR, and you'd always have your presence.

Also someone needs to do this exact thing but with DCS World :)

Not the first time this has been done, and I've seen better results too. The wheel wasn't that well placed in the VR world.

this is not how he plays the game. he has just used a green screen to give the effect of being in the rift, but ifnyou are interested google augmented reality

Sure it is.

if(reality < virtual){

reality = virtual;

Done.

Not exactly all that simple, though, is it?

Making it work at an acceptable frame rate in real time might not be so easy, but you just need enough PC horse power. All of the hardware and functionality is already inside the vive and ready to go. Someone smarter than me just needs to connect all of the dots :)

The tricky part is most likely having it all being done without any input lag.

The other thing is I bet the Vive built in camera is quite low res compared to what this guy used in his video. The Vive camera like a lot of cheaper cameras might also be locked at 30 frames per second which would probably create some distortion when you move your head as the green screen areas from the camera wouldn't match the 90fps of the rendered VR world.

If you look at the Valve advertising videos they already do this in real time (although it's with an external camera). 80 seconds in - you can see them watching it all in real time.

^ very interesting, but for what I like doing, I'd rather have reliable hand tracking. For example, in iRacing, green screening in my wheel would put the incorrect wheel in the car and break the immersion for me. As it is now, the virtual wheel and hands actually feel like my own.

Green Screening themself into a 3rd person view vs Green screening themselve into a a world scale 1st person view to show what the visual appeal of VR is.
