Hi guys,

I'd like to know if you want to share some of the special moments you had in VR?

Anything you did not expect before that blew your mind or put a big smile on your face.

For example: Just yesterday I got into my Mirage kicked in the afterburner, went up to 50000 feet. Then I stood up walked outside the cockpit (I got a Vive) looked around and finally sat down on the back of the plane - just as if I were rocket man. A great feeling looking down to the earth and to the stars above at that altitude.

Also ejecting in VR was a pretty cool experience. Watching your plane fly away and than slowly decending to the ground is quite spectecular since one has that perception of height.

So for me it's also the small things that make VR such an incredible experience ;) But probably there are more of which I did not even think...

A warrior's mission is to foster the success of others.

Couple of moments always come into my mind and since I've had the Rift DK1, DK2, CV1 and the HTC Vive I've got quite a few of them... but to keep it short...

First was when my friend and I first got our DK2 (went halfers on it) and it was acctually a similar experience as you describe above.

We got DCS up and running and he was sitting in his chair in the cockpit of the F15 on the tarmac. He started gushing about how good it was and I asked him to pass me the headset while standing next to him. If I remember right it was actually the first game we tried and the positional tracking so with the DK2 it meant I was now stood outside the cockpit. I promptly told him to shift himself from the chair and was able to "step" into the cockpit. Was a great feeling :)

Second was when we started play some MP. Just a couple of COOP missions. I hadn't noticed that I was flying around with full afterburner on so when we were heading back to home base I ran out of fuel. My friend was on a regular monitor and due to the lack of resolution on the DK2 I couldn't get a bearing on the runway so had to ask him to lead me in with wingtip smoke on.

To this day I don't think I've done a more perfect landing in DCS and I actually landed with exactly ZERO fuel to spare. When I stopped moving none of my control surfaces were functioning and there was sweat dripping down my back!

Last but not least just the other day one of my less "gamery" friends was over trying the HTC Vive. He's been a bit dismissive of the immersion factor but there's a game that lets you use a variety of pistols and shotguns.

He was doing quite well with the close range targets so I got him aim at one of the more distant ones with just a pistol. To help aim he asks if he can use "two hands" with the pistol - to which I reply "of course". But instead of just trying to manhandle the two controllers to hold the gun he promptly DROPS the controller in his left hand onto the ground... "what the hell man?!" I ask... "I thought the table was real..." he replies - needless to say he got a fair ribbing for that one :)

I'm just glad I pushed back playing the UN Pilot campaign until now that I've got OR.

Fun campaign to begin with and really becomes alive with VR!

Air to Air Refueling.

It is absolutely mind blowing. The sheer scale of the tanker is intense.

VR makes it so much easier because of the depth perception too. You can judge the throttle inputs so much easier, and just.. wow. It is so much fun refueling.

- Was flying the P51 and pressed Rshift+P for pilot to appear. When I looked down, I saw the kneeboard. Tried reaching it and swiping left thinking it was my Ipad. Did not work, tried it a second time, then realized it was not my Ipad or me at all in that cockpit.

haha I've had to go to the doc (more than once) to get muscle relaxants the next day. Maybe I should stretch before going into VR... Who would have thought this would be some sort of new yoga.

Last night I was in an F15-C loaded with spamraams working with two mig29s down low and in front. They were playing rabbit (baiting the enemy) while I circled at about fl15 10-15mi back from them. When I got the call I would point downrange and turn TWS on, it was epic.

yeah..I feel the same way. There have been incremental improvements, but we finally made the quantum leap. Give credit where credit is due. Palmer Lucky launched it. And yes, I get that there were VR goggles already. But not at prices consumers could buy it. He kick started -no pun intended....actually yes, pun intended :) - the whole thing. Thank goodness ED jumped on the bandwagon quickly.

That natural situational awareness in 3D is something that's impossible to explain to 4K and 3 monitor folks.

I'm not slamming it, I'm just saying it's impossible to convey it.

I agree however I would add John Carmack's name as well, he really highlighted Palmer's work and I am sure he really made an impact to the product.

Vive have some great innovation on there product too, I am very grateful that we have two huge companies battling VR out however it seems most of the internet love to choose a side .

Best moments a10c aerial refuel because it's so easy, and flying any helicopter in vr because it gives you ultimate spatial awareness along with a butt kicker

Crash landing in a 51....

Hit ground hard, nose tipped over and then back up, bending prop. This immediately made me nauseous ( though I haven't had much sickness w the vive.) Anyway I shut my eyes for a second. The plane veered off the runway and the left undercarriage broke off. The plane tipped over on its side and I shut my eyes again and waited for it to stop.(sidebar my stomach was already bugging me because of something I ate.) anyway I waited a few seconds then opened my eyes again. Plane was on its side, with the wing sheared off. At the root. I was hanging in the seat by my straps looking down to my left out the window. The fuel tank had ruptured and fire was spreading on the ground right below me. It was somewhat startling. All good incentive not to crash.

Starting up the Huey, hover taxing then accelerating away to the coast to land on a frigate steaming along at 20 knots. Bloody cool. Now all we need is for the chopper to not skid on the deck when sitting still.

I'm smiling every day I fly.

Today's highlight moment was when I was in the Su-27, launched a missile, and watched it depart as I flew through it's smoke trail. The feeling of depth was over the top.

Even in the current, early state, VR is nothing short of amazing... I'm really looking forward to how much better it will get over the next months and years; I have the feeling I'm going to be spending a lot of money keeping up. :D

Here's a fraps cap I did a few weeks ago before I got the vive. Oculus ATW works so well! Wish I could fly with shadows again... Maybe oversampling the render with pixel density settings could justify the screen res drop...
