Pikey Posted December 4, 2016 Posted December 4, 2016 Ahead of Viggen, Hormuz and Normandy, Landing ships and amphibious warfare is a massive gap in DCS Worlds ship model library. I've started doing some modding of my own and am looking for help, existing models and talent to assist filling out some of these. Right now i'm looking for 3D models and plans on Polnocny, Ropucha, Aligator and Ivan Rogov class to use in Viggen Campaigns. Working doors are not a priority though. Later will look at the Normandy landing ships, but this may be WIP already from some. Following that, for Hormuz, more up to date US landing craft. There's a bunch of talented people already around who have done various ships and models. If you have work that's not finished or similar ideas or think you could help out, I'd love to hear from you. Any work subsequently doen would be Open to all, nothing payware ever intended and not expecting super high standards either. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Hawkeye60 Posted December 4, 2016 Posted December 4, 2016 Try here for free models, http://www.cadnav.com/ "Yeah, and though I work in the valley of Death, I will fear no Evil. For where there is one, there is always three. I preparest my aircraft to receive the Iron that will be delivered in the presence of my enemies. Thy ALCM and JDAM they comfort me. Power was given unto the aircrew to make peace upon the world by way of the sword. And when the call went out, Behold the "Sword of Stealth". And his name was Death. And Hell followed him. For the day of wrath has come and no mercy shall be given."
crazyeddie Posted December 4, 2016 Posted December 4, 2016 Pikey I tried to drum up some support for more ships a few weeks ago, commercial was what I had in mind but I am always looking for any kind of ship, and we really do need some bigger commercials to bulk out the seaways a bit. Lots of interest but no actual offers of help, so I'm going to have to teach myself how to do it. I think you will find the same mate, everyone is too busy with their own projects. If I ever figure it out I'll let you know. I use the CadNav site, some excellent stuff there and none of it appears to be stolen from anybody else, watch out for that minefield. Eddie
Silver_Dragon Posted December 4, 2016 Posted December 4, 2016 Polnocny, Ropucha, Aligator can be used on baltic sea, but the Ivan Rogov has only assigned to the Pacific and Northem Fleet. Check others Amphibious Warfare Ships here: http://russianships.info/eng/warships/index_amphibious.htm Assault Landing Hovercraft and LCM has very interesting. Pikey Posted December 6, 2016 Author Posted December 6, 2016 Thanks for the thoughts guys. I'm well down the road of doing much of this myself, it's obviously slow going. I've got two peices of the puzzle done (creating the mod in LUA and exporting an existing model into the game) and i'm now progressing on Texturing in 3DS (which is mind blowing) and then either building from scratch or editing existing models, which will take a lot of effort and learning but I am not afraid of. I'm not even considering animations right now, aiming for less ambitious beginings. @SilverDragon, thanks, aware of the Ivan Rogov limitations, It's interesting to Caucasus and the 2008 'invasion' and works as a "replacement" to the Baltic ones at a push, though much of this is making do with what we can get our hands on, which for amphibious, is literally anything! I intend to adapt CTLD to script 'vehicle unloading' whilst no other options are available. I may try to additionally script swapping units to a static unit in the act of unloading. I'll share progress somewhere here and if anyone wants to get involved also it's an open invitation. I'll wait until I ahve something to share though, My "Kashin DD" isnt worth sharing as it's such a hack. Pikey Posted December 6, 2016 Author Posted December 6, 2016 Actually CrazyEddie, I remeber the ships post and at the time I didnt think I had much to offer except a cheer form the sides, but if you want to collaborate and share learning I'll propose a couple of ways in a PM shortly, it might be of mutual benfit. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Pikey Posted December 8, 2016 Author Posted December 8, 2016 (edited) So Mithandra and I have 'embarked' on this ship building malarky. I'm providing the coffee and he's providing the talent. So far can export models with crap textures into DCS and create these as mod plugins. I've got connectors nailed but animations will need another look tomorrow as the guide I originally had was for a previous version, but that wont be long, am practicing on a road vehicle first. We elected to work on an Aligator (Project 1171) probably the Saratov later version as they were spanning a reasonable amount of years of use, some from 1967 still being used in Syria from Novorosiysk. Not sure if we will bother with the cargo doors as yet as I don't think the ships tend to want to actually beach in DCS so will be some jiggery pokery scripting between static objects or some compromise and the use of CTLD type scripting for transporting the 40 or so Amphibious vehicles. I honestly don't know where this endevour will lead. I'd like to think we would carry on and flesh out the ships in DCS for Caucasus, Viggen use, WW2 and even Hormuz (F-18C) later. Thats the plan anyway, but there's more than the fair share of "subject to change" involved. joey45 Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I can get plans for the RN ships... in fact I'm getting hms ocean rescanned at higher dpi next Friday.. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Pikey Posted December 9, 2016 Author Posted December 9, 2016 (edited) Who is doing any work on them by the way? I read some stuff about Illustrious. A UK carrier would be something we would be interested to do for the eventual Harrier release but I wouldn't want to duplicate anyone's efforts. A lusty tribute woudl be fitting given she's off to a Turkish forever-holiday. (At least we don't have to think too hard about what type of carrier for the UK, its gonna be one of the big three) Edited December 9, 2016 by Pikey ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
joey45 Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 I'm sorting out HMS Hermes. I white boxed Lusty about 6 months back for testing but that's as far as it went. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. crazyeddie Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales are going to be converted into very large LPH's with the addition of LCU davits and embarked force messdecks, in effect turning them into multi role carriers. QE will commission as planned, PoW is already being converted and QE will be backwards converted at her first refit. They both retain the spaces for Cat and Trap, but I don't think that is ever likely to be fitted now. The RN does not have enough type D boats to protect them both, so what the RN is getting is 2 very big white elephants, and about as much use. Stick with Lusty and Hermes chaps, much better examples of proper warships.
joey45 Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 So bigger versions of HMS Ocean then.. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. crazyeddie Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 HMS Ocean is being scrapped soon, she is crap anyway, built on the cheap to civilian standards and not up to the job. No orders to replace her in the pipeline. Half the required number of Type D's in service, with all sorts of problems, Type 26's not even started and not enough ordered to even replace existing ships, the current Royal Navy is a shadow of its former self, sadly.

Pikey Posted December 9, 2016 Author Posted December 9, 2016 Nikolay Filchenkov is coming on a little now. Have to say, didn't know there were so many different types of Aligators, only reaslised half way thru when arguing about theshape of something and realised we had two different pictures!4hrs in... ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *

Pikey Posted December 9, 2016 Author Posted December 9, 2016 Well it would have this morning when we were deciding between 150 and 152, but we had plans of the Nikolay Filchenko which aren't so good and on your link are some way better plans of the Saratov type, which have some fundamental differences. Question though...the SA7, for the weapon points are these the empty rails on the back of the superstructure and one each side of mid ships? I guess they would bring them out of the armoury and fire from a stand? And whats the thing on the front of the Saratov near the bow, a box like structure with a blast shield behind it, is that MLRS? Can't trell if its on the Filchenko. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Silver_Dragon Posted December 9, 2016 Posted December 9, 2016 (edited) The Sa-7/-14/-16 rails was common (with 1/2/4 rails) on Soviet ships and not equipped with dedicates air defence area SAM missile systems. 24 missiles carried (8 missiles x 3 launchers) The LST and other amphibious ships normally carry "Grad-M" systems 40 rocket launcher or similar to shore bombardier, the system has a bellow deck recharge with 160 rounds. Other armament has 2x 25mm 2M3M cannons face aft and 1x 57mm ZIF-31B face front. Pikey Posted December 10, 2016 Author Posted December 10, 2016 Got it, cheers. Thought as much but really couldn't confirm. Not sure if I will model the MLRS at this point, we shall see. Grails easy enough to do, 23mm and 57mm easy, though not sure what the 57mm might engage, may leave him also. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Pikey Posted December 13, 2016 Author Posted December 13, 2016 OK, so after a chat and reviewing the excellent source SilverDragon put up Mithandra was OK scrubbing the first attempt and has gotten this far with the next attempt which resolves some of the issues we were facing with finding the structure from distant side-on photos at low angles and a poor Filchenko plan. This would be the Saratov version of Project 1171 and the potential would be much higher for what we can achieve. Just wish I could model or texture like him ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *
Pikey Posted December 14, 2016 Author Posted December 14, 2016 Progress update on the Saratov. We are inadvertently on the third attempt, second time due to the complex fairings and the fact we had already smoothed due to impatience and couldnt join! Some top hull structure to tune and the funel then onto details. ___________________________________________________________________________ SIMPLE SCENERY SAVING * SIMPLE GROUP SAVING * SIMPLE STATIC SAVING *

Raz_Specter Posted December 14, 2016 Posted December 14, 2016 (edited) Progress on the model so far, more detailing done on the crane, still to complete once i get some close up images at different angles. So far I have put around 12 hours into this model but I am pleased with the results. Thanks to Pikey for the research and getting me reference images when i shout :) Comments are welcome.
