Hi guys

I'm new to DCS and struggling. I could really do with some very basic help...

For now, all I want to do, is place myself at an airfield online, watching what's happening. I can connect to a listed 'free flight' or 'aerobatic' server, but only it seems, as a spectator.

I can see no means of actually getting there in an aircraft.

Do i have to create a mission to do this?

Please be patient - i'm not very well:confused:

You'll be able to place yourself only in an aircraft you own.

So if you have the free game with no modules, that will only be a SU-25T or a TF-51D.

The list of available slots indicates for each slot which is the type of aircraft.

Just pick the ones you can fly.

since you are new, im going to presume you have not paid for any aircraft. So the only plane you can fly is the su-25t and the trainer p51.

with that being said, you will need to goto the briefing screen, by finding and pressing the briefing button. From there you can select a aircraft to fly.

Many servers do not allow external views sir, so this may be the reason why you cannot place yourself at the airfield to watch.

Try pressing F11 the next time you are in a server sir, this is the key binding to switch to 'Airfield View'... then you can simply keep pressing F11 until you get to an airfield that has other players taking off and landing on it.

You may have to spawn into an aircraft for this to work... if you do not own any modules you can always enter an SU25T which is free and included in your DCS download.

So find a SU25T in the list then select Briefing in the bottom right hand corner then select Fly to spawn in.

Any more questions just fire away,

Good luck!

Many thanks for the feedback. I have purchased both DCS and the new Spitfire, but nothing shows in the briefing screen at all - its empty. So i'm guessing it maybe what Maveric said about servers.

Did try all the F keys. Could ONLY switch between other user aircraft.

Other than simply trying all the servers one by one, perhaps someone could recommend one for this purpose?

As huge as the manual is, its not very helpful for complete beginners. Hopefully that will develop in time?

Also, many of the servers refuse to connect, stating that 'Pure Client' is required. Is this something I need to install?

Pure client required is only showed when you have mods installed

If you uninstall all modded files and mods (not modules), the shield will turn green and you'll be able to join any server

Worked out the mods issue which gives me a GREEN shield, but still can't arrive (spawn?) on a server in an aircraft though.

I do appreciate your patience guys. I'm brand new to ANY kind of online gaming AND Teamspeak. Have installed it and attempt to work out how to connect;-)

Thanks

I THINK i've attached a pic of what I get;-)

"Pure Client" is the unmodded plain vanilla DCS install without user mods.

If you have installed DCS and installed the Spitfire through the Module Manager, you should be fine.

Check, that you can start a Spitfire mission in singleplayer to ensure the install is working.

In the server list a green shield indicates a server/client that is unmodified.

So a server with a red shield should not care about any user mods installed, if you have a red shield on the top of the list, click on it, and it will list the files causing the integrity check to fail.

This can help to identify the issue.

@Dougal, sorry for a stupid question, but after selecting a slot and getting the briefing window (the one with Spitfire picture) did you actually hit the "Fly" button at the very bottom of the screen?

this looks more like you didn't select the aircraft, normally a lot of servers have a briefing, only when you don't select the plane, you get this

But thats exactly what i'm getting at, where and when do I select the plane? I do not seem to be getting the option.

I just flew a quick 'Instant Action' Flight, so the Spit is working, so are the default aircraft.

Its only when selecting Multiplayer, i dont see the option to select:cry:

You'll need to find a server that has the spitfire. Look for one of those with WW2 in the description.

So the server has to have the same aircraft that I want to fly?

I never see a server with a red shield only green shields. The only way I get a red shield on the top of the list is only after trying to fly on a green shield server and get 'Pure Client' is required because of a mod I have installed.

Yep, my bad... Has changed with one of the last updates.

Integrity check is a setting the server enforces.

If the admin does not require an unmodded version it now shows NO shield...

I am not sure, though, what happens, if the server has integrity check enabled and has a modded version.

At least I could start a server without problem, but don't know how it shows in the list or if this can cause trouble for the client?

COMPLETE NEWBIE question.... Who provides and maintains the servers? Individuals? DCS themselves?
