The Black Swan Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 Don't mind these guys :D I don't think we will see a new kind of Phoenix missle, but as far as a replacement for its role as a long range missile the US is developing new stuff. There is a planned variant on the amraam which would add a ramjet, which I assume would add significant range. The new D model amraam has a significant boost in range and is getting close to what the Phoenix could do. Combined with modern jammers, the effective range isn't much different (at least that's what I would think) GeForce GTX 970, i5 4690K 3.5 GHz, 8 GB ram, Win 10, 1080p

Sweep Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 Who needs a long range air to air missile when you have SM-6s and off-board targeting? Lord of Salt
Pilotasso Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 when the missile costs as much as the plane you have to wonder its practicality. :D 1 .

Silver_Dragon Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 The AIM-54 Phoenix was a planned successor, the AIM-152 AAAM, but was cancelled at the end of Cold War on 1992. http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/m-152.html For Work/Gaming: 28" Philips 246E Monitor - Ryzen 7 1800X - 32 GB DDR4 - nVidia RTX1080 - SSD 860 EVO 1 TB / 860 QVO 1 TB / 860 QVO 2 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Warthog / TPR / MDF

Emu Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 Meteor missile comes close in range and the aim-120D also has a very long range. Meteor is rated around 300km, '3 times NEZ of AIM-120C-5'.
Pilotasso Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 and the thing will be carried by Gripens. Ming boggling. .
fixen Posted February 12, 2017 Posted February 12, 2017 Meteor is rated around 300km, '3 times NEZ of AIM-120C-5'. Meteor has longer range for sure. But we don't know all the actual numbers since they are classified. AIM-120C-8 (D) is the newest version IIRC (might still be prototype, I don't know), which also starts going towards 200km range. Optimal ranges ofcourse.

*Rage* Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Imagine an F-5 tiger carrying AIM-54's. It's nothing like that. Does the Meteor NEZ extend beyond the detection range of the Gripen? That's not even talking about the 2 way missile datalink, P2P data link, buddy homing and all the other Meteor goodies etc. Respectfully, I doubt you know better than the aircraft engineers. Pilotasso Posted February 14, 2017 Posted February 14, 2017 I work in the aerospace sector, and its like working in medical emergencies. A Highly stressfull job and I pick the fights more carefully now. :) waiting for DCS 2.0 to go public + new rig soon, so I can return to MP with a clean setup. So, soon now, soon. before anyone aks, yes I will post a thread for the build, it will be something worth seeing. .

It doesn't have to be the firing aircraft illuminating the target, which is why the Meteor is the perfect weapon for a mixed 4th/5th gen fleet.
Fri13 Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 when the missile costs as much as the plane you have to wonder its practicality. :D Price of plane is nothing compared to price of pilot..... Shoot down a couple pilots KIA, and rest of pilots starts to have stress level higher for next missions and mission designs are started to be revised and maybe even avoided. i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.
