Looney Posted March 26, 2017 Posted March 26, 2017 Is it possible to tweak the accuracy of the onboard gunners? Right now they don't seem to be hitting the broad side of a barn... I landed very near red AI infantry set to AI OFF and after expended almost 3 cases of ammo, the door gunner finally found his mark.. The rear gunner, I don't know man, he was just looking at this red guy and doing nothing.... They're pretty much eye candy at the moment, they never actually defend the helicopter from threats. I know the Huey gunners are adjustable. How accurate are they?
dooom Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 i actually liked the old gunners much better. ASUS Tuf Gaming Pro x570 / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @ 3.8 / XFX Radeon 6900 XT / 64 GB DDR4 3200 "This was not in the Manual I did not read", cried the Noob" - BMBM, WWIIOL
firmek Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 ... Right now they don't seem to be hitting the broad side of a barn... Fact is they wouldn't be able to hit barn when shooting inside of it. The rear gunner seem actually to have a tad better aim. There is a chance that he’ll hit something when overflying the target - which generally is not the smartest thing to do, especially that the pilot should maintain steady flight to give any chances for the AI gunners. Regarding Huey gunners, their accuracy isn't adjustable (unless there is some kind of a mod out there). It's possible to set their reaction to threats and burst length. Aside of that I don't think Huey gunners have much better accuracy - Miniguns split so many bullets that they'll hit something eventually. With M60 their aim is similar to that from Mi-8 and Kord. F/A-18, F-16, F-14, M-2000C, A-10C, AV-8B, AJS-37 Viggen, F-5E-3, F-86F, MiG-21bis, MiG-15bis, L-39 Albatros, C-101 Aviojet, P-51D, Spitfire LF Mk. IX, Bf 109 4-K, UH-1H, Mi-8, Ka-50, NTTR, Normandy, Persian Gulf... and not enough time to fully enjoy it all
Looney Posted March 27, 2017 Author Posted March 27, 2017 We have to compensate for the sim as opposed to real life. If you have a helicopter overhead firing a 12.7mm at you, you'd duck and take cover even if his fire wasn't close. I've been very near to heli gunners and they'll use their aim and any offset is compensated for in the next number of shots, essentially walking their impact onto the target. Sure enough, firing from a helicopter is anything but accurate but with the pinpoint accuracy of the AI, we should have some compensation with regards to the accuracy of our door gunners. IIRC, it is possible to edit a .LUA file in the UH1 to allow for better accuracy of the doorgunners, YMMV though. EntropySG Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 I agree. We make extensive use of the wonderful Mi-8 and often times fly troop insertion with CAS and JTAC scenarios. It would be so damn nice if those door gunners at least were able to somewhat suppress hostile infantry. Any buff that could be provided to them would be great. We do know the Mi8 is not meant to be flown into combat guns blazing, and we always have escort flights in the AO, but giving those door gunners just a little bit of effectivity would be great! Thanks for your consideration Belsimtek! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
JaBoG32_Prinzartus Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 (edited) If the door gunner's tracers would just indicating the area of enemy infantry. Right now, when in flight and the gunners are shooting I have not even an idea what they are aiming for. rtimmons Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 I have good success with the huey door gunners.....you can stay up high to avoid ground fire and they will eventually kill all the ground targets. The MI-8 gunners never hit anything so I have stopped using them. slyfly
Looney Posted March 27, 2017 Author Posted March 27, 2017 That's because you can set the accuray of the UH1 door gunners in the mission editor. For the Mi-8 though, this option is not available regretfully. I do hope they add it as it's in the UH1 module already.. Art-J Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 This Robin's vid sums up the subject nicely :D. Recorded back when the Hip just got its gunners, but I don't think anything has improved since then. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.
cthulhu68 Posted March 27, 2017 Posted March 27, 2017 The rear gunner, I don't know man, he was just looking at this red guy and doing nothing.... I've yet to see the rear gunner expend a single round of ammunition.:(

If you have a helicopter overhead firing a 12.7mm at you, you'd duck and take cover even if his fire wasn't close." I think Looney makes a good point. In real combat you see about 1 % of the targets you see in DCS. And you dont have the infantry standing around waiting to get mowed down. So it all evens out...

If that was the case, it would equally affect Huey gunners as well. It doesn't, however. i7 9700K @ stock speed, single GTX1070, 32 gigs of RAM, TH Warthog, MFG Crosswind, Win10.
jeffdude Posted March 28, 2017 Posted March 28, 2017 I have to add to this thread because the gunners was a feature I was very much looking forward to, but a nice visual is all we got. It would be so nice to have them actually shoot something! Has anyone found a scenario where these things(MI8 Door gunners) are useful at all [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Looney Posted March 28, 2017 Author Posted March 28, 2017 We're going to be trying the door gunners and the suppression script to see if we can make the gunners somewhat useful. What we really would like to see is the same love the UH1 gunners got in the mission editor, setting the accuracy of the gunners with a slider. It's there for the UH1, why not the Mi-8? If the implementation of the gunners is done in the same way, copying over code from uh1 to mi8 may be a solution. Than again, I'm no software guy...
