Treating myself to what I hope is the ultimate DCS rig:

MSI x370 motherboard

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x

Closed loop coolong

32 GB RAM

DUAL GTX 1080Ti 11 GB GDDR 5x

1200w power supply

1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD

Will this keep DCS at max settings for a few years?

Should I get a 4K monitor?

Appropriate for VR?

Being built by Maingear

Approx $4300.00

Posted (edited)

well... dcs can't really be run max settings, unless you're playing 1080p 60hz, but you'll be able to turn the settings up pretty darn high... and 4300$ is a good price for that.

Fwiw, if you go VR I don't believe Nvidia has quite optimized their drivers yet for SLI in VR...

subscribe to dburne: SLI is already a dead technology. It will be replaced by DX12 which in theory will be able to combine any two or more GPUs, no matter of that type. SLI support was always quite poor and now it remains more like a legacy.

DCS itslef does not really use SLI features very well... i used to have a SLI in the past and changed to 1080Ti for more success.

That's what I want to hear!

Are most of these performance debates "computer geek nitpicking"?(as I suspect)

I am computer illiterate, just love DCS!

Just want to avoid any glaring mistakes!

I have two 980ti in sli. In vr with OR, I see 97%usage on one and 20-25% on the other. It's similar when not in vr. I can't tell what it would be with a 1080...

When you toss the 2nd 1080Ti, take that money and get a proper Watercooling that includes your remaining 1080Ti ( Asus Poseidon would be my pick again ).

There are many good ones around and if money is not the question I would avoid Closed-AIO Loops.

Get some FAST RAM as well, maybe even 3600, even if you have to downclock them until supported later this year. This machine will perform around the anchor-frequency of your RAM, that is your most inner beating heart with Ryzen !!! 3200+ is recommended.

Apart from that, good pick !

So are you suggesting I avoid the dual 1080Ti and go with only one?

Yes save that money, would be smarter to spend it elsewhere.

If you are doing 32GB with 4 DIMMs, you will be speed limited to 2133Mhz. Anything above that is a crap shoot on whether or no you can boot and run stable.

I love my Ryzen7 rig, and it has no issues with DCS. Just make sure you know the specs/limits before spending your hard-earned money.

Exchange that Ryzen for an Intel chip and you are good to go. Im not an intel fanboy, but a third generation (and higher) overclocked i5 will eat any Ryzen in DCS performance.

I dont think you will get any better performance with an Sli setup. Just buy one card and in 3 years time swap it for the latest one, keeping the rest of your rig!

Have we actually had any direct real world DCS comparisons of an Intel v Ryzen CPU with same GPU?

I would get this screen ASUS PG348Q 3440x1440 @ 100Hz G-SYNC, cRazy expensive at the moment and VR headset?. I do like my G-SYNC 144Hz screen and would not go back to 60Hz, even if at 4K. Monitor discussion

Yes, attendees are invited to fly our Hornet in VR, including landings on our new carrier for the brave.

P.S. The new arrestor wire physics are pretty cool smile.gif
