Okay guys I'm in need of a new build I have a $800.00 budget and with the exception of DOTA 2 I only play DCS World.

I came up with the following:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: *Intel - Pentium G4560 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor ($79.89 @ B&H)

Motherboard: *Gigabyte - GA-B250M-DS3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($69.89 @ OutletPC)

Memory: G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($124.88 @ OutletPC)

Storage: ADATA - Ultimate SU800 512GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($136.69 @ Amazon)

Video Card: Asus - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB Dual Video Card ($289.98 @ Newegg)

Case: Corsair - Carbide SPEC-04 (Black/Red) ATX Mid Tower Case ($39.99 @ Newegg)

Power Supply: *Corsair - CXM 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($34.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $776.31

It's my understanding that DCS World only really utilizes two cores so I should be fine with the Pentium. I will only be running the game at 1080P so my aim is to run the game at high settings and still get good FPS (e.g. 60 preferably). Open to suggestions. Thanks in advance

That CPU may be inexpensive but it's single thread performance is less than stellar, IMHO. You should also keep in mind that although DCS only uses two threads, you still have to run Windows and it's associated processes at the same time, not to mention things like TIR and other ancillary applications.

You might want to look at this article as well.

The chart 3/4 down the page is quite relevant to your build.

Considering the frame rates of the tested games and how demanding DCS can be, I seriously doubt that you are going to get anything close to 60 FPS with high settings in DCS.

I strongly advice against a Pentium CPU. Get at least an i5@3.8, better 4GHz.

If you upgrade the CPU to an i5, then for 1.5.7 you should be ok with the GTX 1060@1080p and 60Hz. Not for Normandy and Nevada. All of this could change with the next update to better or worse, of course.

Windows 10 64bit, Intel i9-9900@5Ghz, 32 Gig RAM, MSI RTX 3080 TI, 2 TB SSD, 43" 2160p@1440p monitor.

dont you wish there was a way to assign windows processes to an external cpu?

Don't go for the Pentium man, also the SSD isnt really necessary, go for a WD Blue 1tb HD instead, unless you NEED shorter loading times. you can also place less priority on the RAM, get 16gb of 1600mhz RAM, the money you save could go towards a better CPU

Okay so I made some adjustments using a few suggestions here:

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1500X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($176.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Motherboard: *MSI - B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard ($81.98 @ Newegg)

Memory: *GeIL - EVO POTENZA 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($111.99 @ Newegg)

Storage: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($47.88 @ OutletPC)

Video Card: Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 3GB 3GB Windforce OC Video Card ($224.98 @ Newegg)

Case: Cooler Master - MasterBox 5 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case ($64.98 @ Newegg)

Power Supply: *SeaSonic - G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($51.47 @ NCIX US)

Total: $760.27

I'm not sure how much VRAM DCS utilizes (i.e. <3GB or >3GB) but it's really difficult finding a good video card within budget with this video card shortage.

If I was you, I would try to use the old HDD for a while, old case and old PSU if possible to free some more money and get your rig future proof.

My advice was: 6GB GPU, 6-core Ryzen 1600 or 1600X, SSD and maybe a few more Watts on the PSU as 550 might be a limiting factor down the road, I would pick a 750w Seasonic.

You can add things like SSD, PSU, Case, big HDD ANYTIME after you buy the stuff you cannot make bigger once bought, CPU MOBO GPU, invest in those 3 properly and add the others in the following weeks/months as you can afford it.

my 2 cents.

The thing is I'm using an Alienware Alpha so I can't use the existing case or PSU. My current HDD is rated at 5400 RPM so yeah it's getting binned. So DCS uses more than 3GB ram I'm assuming?

That depends on the resolution you will be gaming at. 3GB may be enough now on the 1.5 branch and FullHD. I would not bet that 3GB will be enough with 2.5 and any new map, incl the renewed Caucasus. I would get as much VRAM as you can afford and would not consider 3GB for a new purchase.

No. I just purchase an appropriate CPU to begin with.

I think your build is starting to look really good. but yeah my GTX 760 OC (2gb) is really struggling with the NTTR and Normandy maps on 2.0, I'm upgrading soon. I'd suggest future proofing and getting a card with 6Gb of dedicated VRAM if you can somehow squeeze it into the budget. 2.0 can be quite taxing on your system compared to 1.5 great job improving your setup, Its starting to look like a really good balance between performance and affordability

Well here's the final build:

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1500X 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($176.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Motherboard: *MSI - B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard ($81.98 @ Newegg)

Storage: Western Digital - Blue 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($89.99 @ Amazon)

Video Card: Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB D5 6G Video Card ($279.98 @ Newegg)

Case: NZXT - S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ Newegg)

Power Supply: *EVGA - SuperNOVA G2 550W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($62.98 @ Newegg)

Total: $853.90

Hope she serves me well. Replacing an i3, 8GB ram GTX 860M and 5400RPM HDD. So I'm really looking forward to this build. I'll toss some benchmarks up when she's built. Thanks for the suggestions!
