SUGGESTION - GENERIC AREA MAPS/THEATRES WITH SELECTION OPTION

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking through the whole new map scenario, whilst reading some of the request/suggestion posts.

As the title eludes to why not have a generic area map depicting the actual geographic region eg Korea, Vietnam or wherever etc etc with two selectable options: HISTORIC and MODERN. The selected option would not change the map geography at all, just how the map is populated with the following items: Airfields, Buildings, Naviagtion Options, Runways and Vehicle Types. I thought that this option could be made available in the ME using the COALITIONS selection screen under the MAPS option.

I realise this would create a great deal of extra workload for the map developers but that maybe a small price to pay for the diversity it would bring to the community.

So how would this potentially be possible.......Well we know the current maps are/ will be capable of creating destruction zones that remove map objects so perhaps this innovation could be expanded to replacing items but obviously not with a trigger zone. My thought process here was, that doing it this way would negate the need for the developer to have two physical different map versions. Anyway just the bare bones of a concept....Cheers.

I am quite sure there might be a big market for generic maps.

However, a big aspect of operational flying is navigation, so how that aspect could be catered for may be a severely limiting factor.

Given enough choice of real-world locations, in the manner we are currently seeing them, pretty much every geographical region could be covered, and as for historical depictions, all flying is a modern era thing, so with the addition of asset packs, such things as unique buildings, and equipment can be covered.

So really, I can't see a place for generic maps when you get down to details. It is something that might be possible given some work-rounds however.

Not a wishlist item for me personally, but a "generic" all water map (or one with just a few tiny islands - even if were someplace in the Pacific or Atlantic) for exclusive Naval/ carrier ops might be quite nice, and would probably be low-effort for the devs?

I know that the Caucasus map has water... but a true oceacn map could max that out to 1000 x 1000km potentially. As long as it has some real-world grid referencing it would most likely be light on systems (no towns, no objects except those added my mission makers) and could service all time periods.

I always liked the idea of what SF2 did with NA, which was a North Atlantic map, the only landmass was Iceland, if we got a map like this, but maybe including the Faroe islands for instance, but apart from those 2 landmasses it is more or less open Ocean that would be brilliant.

I certainly like the idea of having multiple 'versions' of a map. Not quite sure how much work that would actually be. Are all of the map objects placed individually during creation? That would mean a lot of work just for populated places alone.

We've got Mirages and Harriers... Falklands war?

I'd love a Falklands War situation for DCS, I'd love maps (or better still, one map for all of it) as well as an assets pack as well as flyable aircraft modules of the period, but that's maybe for another thread.

But yes a Falklands War-alike scenario would be possible with say a North Atlantic/Sea of Norway map having Iceland and the Faroe islands - it's certainly one I'd enjoy very much providing we get proper maritime facilitation (underwater and proper amphibious operations/amphibious capability for the many amphibious vehicles present already in DCS) would be fantastic.

I was thinking of something like this, though I was thinking in terms of Navaids as well. For example, it would be nice to have a "modern" Normandy with TACAN and ILS. Even if this flies in the face of accuracy, it embraces the sandbox nature of the game and allows more flexibility in scenario design (e.g. poor weather takeoff and landing).

+1. (Paint the “modern Normandy” TACANs woodland green to blend in like they do cell phone towers in overly indulgent affluent neighborhoods in the US) :D

I don't need no stinkin' GPS! (except for PGMs :D) :pilotfly:

Agreed on both points. Generic is not for me, as the whole "Mock-Upistan" style environments lack context and the possibility to plan a sortie from something like google maps, using real world charts etc.

The idea of an Ocean-Map with a grid-reference in the Atlantic and/or Pacific, may be with a part of a handful small islands, actually makes a lot of sense with the current roadmap adding some interesting options for carrier ops, with basically a negligible effort (for an all Ocean map, at least).

Open water map was already discussed here:

My proposal was a portion of Pacific Ocean including Midway, Wake Island and Johnston Atoll.

Good for historical use in WWII, good for the Tarawa with AV-8B and... good for put your nuclear carrier ready for your Hornet landings;)
