1.5.8 and 2.2.0 to 2.5 transition Discussion

If there is a prompt to delete 2.2, then why not have an option to move 2.2 files during 2.5 update rather than copy them. That would save space required for install.

That's a good question!

During the one to two weeks between when the 2.5 open beta drops and the 2.5 release installer drops, I'm sure users will be able to say exactly how many Gb 2.5 release will need. As I said before, if you have both 1.5 open beta and 2.2 open alpha, right click on 1.5 open beta. Left click on "properties" and write down the size of 1.5 open beta. Then, right click on 2.2 open alpha, left click on "properties," and write down the size of that file. Add the two sizes, and you can assume that the 2.5 open beta will not exceed that sum. If you just have 1.5 stable, or just 1.5 open beta, or just 2.2 open alpha, don't bother asking if you have enough space because no no one on this forum knows how much will be downloaded! You will get as much of an answer as "When will we be landing a crew on Neptune?" No one knows, so no one can answer. Please stop asking.

Good question indeed, hopefully one of the ED staff can answer. I'm sure that small change won't delay the release more than a couple of months. J/k :P

Balzarog, one could calculate, that the map itself will add about 11,5 GB compared to its former version (based on quoted size of the new one) but by simple adding two installs you're counting all aircraft and AI assets twice - that will mess up the estimation by quite a margin, so I wouldn't go that way :D.

Agree about other points, though.

The Hornet is best at killing things on the ground. Now, if we could just get a GAU-8 in the nose next to the AN/APG-65, a titanium tub around the pilot, and a couple of J-58 engines in the tail...

Another stupid question.... Will I be able to connect to multiplayer servers running either 2.5 Open Beta or 2.5 Release with just one of those clients? Or will I need to install both to be able to connect to online servers that have chosen one over the other?

That I don’t know. You’re disinclined to install (or force to) stable after OB?

I'm short on SSD space, so I'd prefer to use OB only for the latest features. I'd like to avoid having OB and stable installed.

Same here. If at some point there is an update in OB that I dont want then I just wont install it. Then when the same update is on the release I download it.

It will be the same as it is now, if the beta and release are identical (they often are), you'll be able to join with whichever version you have. Once the beta gets an update, you'll only be able to connect to the version you have (beta or release). Until the release caches up with the beta, and the same process starts all over again.

Well, it seems like a roll to me.

Why so many versions?

From what I understand, version 2.5.0 will work with all module and current terrains, such as Caucasus, Nevada and all the planes that we now have.

It is normal for everyone to download the latest version 2.5.0 as it is the newest and best, of course.

So, why keep the old versions?

What are the versions or versions of the versions running, when there is a new and improved version 2.5.0?

I do not understand why you do not leave version 2.5.0 and delete all the others. I do not see how it makes sense to leave old versions.

If you want 2.5 you can update to 1.5.8 beta and then let it install 2.5 beta once it's out on the 31st. If you want stable that won't be released until later.

But I still have the same doubt. Once stable version 2.5 is in place, what are the old versions for?

Everyone will install the new version, right?

So, why leave old ersions and drive people crazy with so many versions?

The most normal thing is to release the stable version 2.5 and eliminate the other versions, and leave only the newest version.

That's what they are doing. It will copy files from 1.5.8 and 2.2 then you will have everything in 2.5. Same will happen for the beta release next week. It's gonna copy files from both beta 1.5 and 2.2 if you have both installed.

Stable release will probably come by February and at that point you can roll back to stable 2.5 via the command line using the new dcs updater..assuming you installed 2.5 when it was in beta.

I have only DCS Open Alpha (2.2) installed. I am on a limited data plan on satellite internet for a couple months. I do not currently have Open Beta installed. So I have a few questions.

1. If I install DCS 2.5 Open Beta, will it still copy files from my open Alpha installation?

2. Is the smallest download (I know it will be 10's of GB still) to use the stand alone Open Beta installer when it is released on Feb 1? Would installing Open Beta 1.5 have any benefit?

3. Is there anyway to download a full data standalone installer? I am able to download without limits at work and have a 128 gb flash drive, so just asking if there was anyway I could utilize this to get a lot of the data on my computer at home without going through my satellite internet.

Ok, so I have to download and install 1.5.8 beta to update it later if the stable version isn't going to be updated anymore.

You should update 2.2 to beta branch. Then when 2.5 beta comes out it will update to 2.5 by copying files from your 2.2 beta. It will still need to download what you don't have installed (1.5 caucus map and any aircraft).

I imagine after it is released in beta,2.5 that is, you can download a standalone 2.5 beta installer and go that route..say you wanted a fresh install. But the installer will copy files from previous versions if you already have them anyway.

Ok guys, I'm going to try explaining this a different way. I hope this doesn't sound patronizing, it isn't meant to, this is just the best analogy I could come up with at short notice.

Forget the version numbers for now. Think of a road with two lanes, one being "stable" and the other being "open beta". Stable will always join the stable lane, open beta will always join the open beta lane. If you only want one lane on your PC at a time that's fine, but if you want the other lane you will need the other version.

Keemarcello, the open beta "lane" will continue to get each update (eg patches and bug fixes) before stable, as it does now. That's the point of having two versions, so they don't risk releasing something that will tank everyone's machine at once.

1. Yes, the Open Beta will copy whatever it can from your 2.2 Alpha.

2. I think there will be a negligible difference in the size of download between the Open Beta and Stable. If you only want to download it once, I recommend you wait for stable.

3. You can download a standalone installer, but I don't think you can copy the download itself - I believe you would have to let it actually *install* the game on your work computer and then copy the directory. Would that be ok or would you get fired for installing a non work related program?
