fencible Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Meh, the money is nothing, 80 bucks means you stay home and cook one night instead of going out to eat. Decide to do that instead and your total value will a tasty treat today and one crap tomorrow. Decide to skip that night out and get the F18 and you'll be thrashing about the virtual skies for months, possibly years. Seriously, the money isn't worth talking about for anyone who would describe themselves as a flight sim type. That doesn't mean the module is a buy, I'm saying the money shouldn't be a consideration because flight simulation is about the best value entertainment money can buy. ...<snip>... Not sure a pure dogfighter is going to find the F18 the craft he wants to get into for his evening flight, I suspect a dedicated dogfighter will find his cursor hovering over the F18 for a second but then move over to something WW2 or Korean vintage and that gets selected instead. Yep. How many groceries can you buy with $80? How much gas for your car? I know lots of people who burn twice that for their motor boat gas in one weekend. And we're going to find that, like the MiG21, some really hot specialists are going to prove that the F-18C, with it's special handling characteristics, is a very dangerous dog-fighter for those who really learn how to fly it.
NevSmith Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 (edited) YOU SHOULD BY IT, DEFINITELY !!!! In various articles and magazines I've read multiple times, that a F/A-18 is one of the most capable aircraft when it comes to real "Knife-In-The-Theef-Fights" (close Dog Fights), as long as you are doing it right in the first moments/seconds of the merge. --> So, doing it RIGHT with STICK, RUDDER AND MIND, can compensate its actual lack of weaponery to a certain extend, and makes it even more challenging. But the real beauty of it lies in its multiple roles the craft can play during different requirements - AND >>MAYBE<< THE KING OF THIS REQUIREMENTS IS CARRIER LANDING (even at night or pitching deck) - many competent pilots have described this more as an art yet. --- and Navy Pilots have confirmed many times, that regular deck landings made them more scare to death, than beeing in country actually (means: on real war mission). Have a quick look here, it's a fantastic video: It is absolutely okay if you are interested in dogfighting primarly, but you'll miss a looooot of good, quite challanging and rewarding stuff out there in DCS World. If dogfighting stay your premise: Buy a Spit, Kurfürst or Mustang and you can judge on your Stick/Rudder/Energy Management/Situation Awareness skills better. Because this planes are not able to mask or compensate your weaknesses with the help of sophisticated means which are settled down in todays fighter aircraft. Call_Sign Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 No, you will be paying top dollar for an aircraft that is not ready. Unless you like frustration!
Alphamale Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Lenux, Since you're asking an Internet forum if you should buy something, and everyone on it already owns it, of course you're going to hear everyone saying "yes". The F/A-18 is a really nice module, but it's very, and I mean *very*, unfinished. The basic starting-and-flying-around stuff is there, but it's missing most of the stuff that makes the real Hornet a useful multirole fighter. The radar is mostly unfinished and doesn't work well. The air-to-ground weapons and systems are mostly nonexistent. I strongly suspect it'll be years before it's even close to done. So, should you buy it? If you feel like it :) AD Seriously..."YEARS" ????
Zimmerdylan Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 Hello everyone, Just wanted to ask you ( advices) about this aircraft. Should I buy it or not? Dogfighting only I have only the Nevada, Caucasus and Normandy maps How would you compare FA18C, with Su33, M2000C, F5E, for dogfighting? Does the FA18C has a chance against Su33, for example? PS : I own almost every modules ( no helicopters) Thanks in advance, guys, have a great day It's your money. Spend it any way you want. Letting a lot of complete strangers tell you what to do with it is a bit like asking them if you like chicken, or fish. I mean.....You have already pretty much made up your mind. The validation of strangers isn't going to change that............
dotChuckles Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 If you like systems, flying a modern jet and old school ground pounding then get it for sure. If air to air is your thing then it's a little bit limited in it's current early access form. Lack of IFF and some radar features make it a bit hard to fight and win in the BVR range. Up close in a knife fight with a visual target it's great though. That said, this will balance out as it goes through development, and in the meantime there is plenty of stuff to master. Recovery to the carrier for one will make you sweat and if very satisfying. Just depends on your focus. If you have ED bucks to spend from the reward scheme I'd use them to get it. But if you're really wanting an air superiority fighter right now, then hold off six months and you'll love it. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

shawnyp420 Posted June 11, 2018 Posted June 11, 2018 You should definitely buy the F-18C! I would gladly pay $70 just for the pleasure of high fidelity trapping in VR alone!! Trap trap trap..... trap..... Not only can you trap - you can fly just about any mission conceivable once all the weapons and systems are complete. If you pick up the Persian Gulf map you can simulate incursions into Iran and intercept American made Iranian F5s! AMD Ryzen 5 3600, ASUS X570-PLUS, NVidia RTX 2080, 32GB DDR4 @2400MHz, Samsung 850 EVO 250GB, Corsair H100i cooler, Oculus Rift S.

PS : I own almost every modules ( no helicopters) Thanks in advance, guys, have a great day If you are only looking to yank and bank and spam 120s, this module may not be for you [ Yet ]. It is a very subjective question. If you appreciate the subtle attention to detail and the true next generation of combat flight simming then this product is definitely worth the money. $79.99 is a hefty sum for many, myself included. But in terms of the return on investment in entertainment value alone I think the price is a no brainer. After nearly 30 years in flight simming I can happily tell you that this is truly a ground breaking product even in its current state. There really are no current cutting edge SIM products in this price range. Heck Prepare3D does not have this level of fidelity and that is a $200.00 product with barebones non-study sim aircraft out of the box. It is subjective, what do you want for your hard earned cash.
chinpok Posted June 12, 2018 Posted June 12, 2018 The dumb bombs are Good fun! and the workhorse for every mud mover ;) by the way the CCIP and Auto mods work like a charm! you can even hit a single vehicle with a bomb! other than the A-10 no other DCS module can do that as accurately... maybe the Viggen... It's fun but I find it very hard to hit a targets with normal bombs(you need to be very precise to kill a T72) but yes you are right at least it is possible :). SE is better but usually you carpet bomb with it so one/two runs and it's gone. Rocket(the big ones) on the other hand are quite easy to use and effective. I'm talking about MP servers(and CBUs are not allowed usually) not just practice so you don't have too much time to mess around :) But this is a rookie bomber's perspective I didn't touch the A-10 for 2 years :)
