Alphamale Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 Alphamale- are you saying hornet should be able to jettison the pylons to be accurate with the real life plane, or are you saying it would be nice to have? Considering it has already been stated that the pylons are bolted on, I'm assuming you meant the latter. In which case I think you'd have better luck in the wishlist section of this forum, and to be completely honest I think your argument will fall on deaf ears as it's just not accurate for the plane in question. The latter...I thought it was obvious..."it should" is equivalent with "It'd be nice"....:music_whistling:
Alphamale Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 Pylons should be capable of being jettisoned There, now it's in the wish list where it can fall on deaf ears...
SkateZilla Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 Yeah, and you know they had the tech to do it way back then. So here's a "feature" that you know should have been designed into it to begin with (and the very fact that they were bolted, shows that they were intended to be removed. Otherwise, why not weld it to the frame to begin with? But so we stay as "original" as possible, we don't allow for the emergency capability of ejected pylons...especially the wing pylons 2,3, 7, & 8 Not Designed to be Jettisonable and Not Designed to be Removed are 2 Different things. They are Designed to be Removed for Maintenance and Repair, and They Are Removed for Reduced Drag during Aerobatic Demonstrations. You Cannot Eject them from within the Cockpit, while In flight, and never could. The Only Option, and the Realistic Option, is to remove them on the ground via Loadout Screen. https://patents.google.com/patent/US2865584 looks like this was capable since 1956 That's for the Ejector Actuators Built Into the Suspension unit used to Kick Stores and Racks AWAY from the Pylon. Not for Ejecting the Suspension Unit off the Aircraft. Mad_Max2 Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 "it should" is equivalent with "It'd be nice".... No...Saying the Hornet should have jettisonable pylons is much different than saying it would be nice if the Hornet had jettisonable pylons. "Should" implies objectivity.
Banzaiib Posted July 3, 2018 Posted July 3, 2018 No...Saying the Hornet should have jettisonable pylons is much different than saying it would be nice if the Hornet had jettisonable pylons. "Should" implies objectivity. Beating the dead horse... I want them to jettison because I think it looks cool... VS. I want them to jettison because the real F-18c could jettison them (which it can't). 2 different things, and this isn't going to happen.

Frederf Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 I am interested in the rare case where certain items could theoretically be configured for jettison but the choice is made not to physically. Example, ALQ-184 pod is expensive and secret so it's not included in the jettison config by choice. In theory one could configure it for jettison like a bomb since it's just being suspended by the bomb suspension equipment. Apart from some flag in the software and the choice not to put the explosive bits in the bomb rack, there's nothing preventing a jettison of an ALQ or even a targeting pod.

Frederf Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 No sarcasm and that's the point of the question, there are things you can do which you normally wouldn't but they aren't impossible.

Papa Spardy Posted July 6, 2018 Posted July 6, 2018 Fun fact!! On the super hornets the wing pylons are all pivoted outboard to a degree to cause turbulence under the wing in flight to create more lift. I have no clue if this is true for the legacy hornets.

Incorrect, The Super Hornet Pylons are Canted outward for weapon separation clearance. Papa Spardy Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 2 birds 1 stone? I was told this by a Boeing engineer that was working on our jets. Maybe he was lieing to me.
SkateZilla Posted July 10, 2018 Posted July 10, 2018 2 birds 1 stone? I was told this by a Boeing engineer that was working on our jets. Maybe he was lieing to me. Pylons Canted Outward: Inboard was Canted outward, for weapon separation clearance, Midboard was canted because inboard was canted outboard was canted because midboard was canted. Turbulence? it creates a bit of drag. the only other affect it has, is the pylons themselves compress the air moving under the wing into the direction of the Horizontal Stabs.
