Aim 120 armed Harriers?

What are the chances that we will see the AV-8B plus models of harrier? (the ones that havean Air to Air radar that allows firing of AIM120)

 

Not sure if its on the cards but could be cool

It would be cool for some fleet defense--cos taking off from the light carrier the Air to Ground payload is limited to almost nothing.

You can do that with Sidewinders now...

 

But if Razbam were to do a AV8+ I think they could copy pasta a lot of the radar features from the current hornet even though I think it was the older hornet radar system that they used. But I wouldn't mind seeing it since both Italy and Spain used em and if you squint hard even the brits, though the Gr.9 was different enough. Be even better if we got a ski jump carrier in the official game cuz, turns out you can take off with a fair amount more weight from those.

I mean, the GR9 is vastly different from the FA2 Sea Harrier. Re the British ski jump, you can take off with a full load!

I was comparing the GR9 to the AV8B+. I think the major differences there were radar/ECM suite/extra pylons, and possibly some other avionics, but similar/same air-frame/engine.

 

Good to know you can do a full load, I need to get the Hermes downloaded again, and we need to see if there is a way to get it adopted formaly into DCS (with the creators permission of course). I would LOVE to have it in game as a complement to the Tarawa.

that is what I was telling my squad that when I worked with the British Harrier, before Falklands, they took off with full loads... never once saw a running take-off, all were vertical.:joystick:

Razbam mentioned they were interested in doing a + eventually but it would be a separate module if and when they did.

I'll have to remake Hermes properly IF ED wants to adopted her formally into DCS. Unless RAZBAM is doing her as well.

US Operated + models too. I am 99% sure VMA-513 used them. I am fairly certain that was the squadron I took some A/R pictures of in the desert. 513 is no more though.

There are definitely US Harriers armed with AMRAAMS. Look at this video, at 1:07 and 3:42 there are clearly AMRAAM armed Harriers, from VMA-231 according to the video description. Even the thumbnail one has them!

Its a more recent adoption. From sources i found Aim120 was not implemented operationally until as recent as 2011 for the usmc.

 

Don't know if razbam can get documentation that recent. The most recent tactical manual i ever came across was from 2002. Any AIm120' employment procedures are not documented or listed as an authorized weapons store at this point in time.

ITs similar, but there are some slight differences aside form being the older APG65 radar. the APG65 radar antenna in the harrier had to be scaled down due to size constraints. the radar antenna only 23 Inches as opposed to 28 in the Hornet.

 

According to the tactical manual the Harriers APG65 radar can do up to EXP 3 zoom along with medium resolution SAR . That I find very interesting, when apparently it was thought only the APG73 radar after Phase 2 upgrades got such capacity.

 

Any noted differences can be adjusted from relative source code from Hornets radar based on source documentation pertaining to the harrier

Yes, the requirement came first from European navies (Italian and Spanish).

USMC did not jump on it immediately...
