DCS still requires the oculus software to be installed. Pretty sure DCS doesn't natively support any HMD, all of them require some type of middleware to work (steam, WMR, or oculus software).

All hardware require services and drivers loaded up in the background, from your basic mouse to your audio drivers and GPU.

The Oculus has those through the oculus software, without that and the processes running under that umbrella it would be nothing but a paper weight.

DCS for instance talks directly with the oculus software side of things.

Unlike with WMR where it would need to run up against Steamvr that then talks to the WMR services.

Same Pimax for that instance, dcs run on steamvr, steamvr runs on top of Pitool and services.

And this extra step could take as much as 10-30% performance head room.

Is the S the killer VR HMD.

Nope not by a long shot, but neither is any of the others either.

It is however the better performing HMD that looks as good or better than the 5k+ with nearly none of the issues while rendering half as many pixels.

So unlike the pimax or index, which quite frankly is "get a 2080ti, or don't bother" it instead works well with even a 1070.

All these new HMD's are better than those from 2016/17 indeed, but they are just an iterative move forwards not a giant leap in any major direction.

Rift S seems the best performer right now and throughout this year, until new stuff comes out in 2020/21.

Index is praised, but for over two times the price and three months waiting period... I think I'd keep Rift S until an Index killer comes out next year.

Or maybe when the fixed Reverb gets released. 2k per eye is the future standard, too bad they screwed up with the displays and cable connectors. Would have been a solid buy for me, if they did it right the first time.

Yeah I am pretty much there with you. I get very good performance and clarity in my Rift S, and with the latest 1.39 Oculus Update (PTC) tracking is very good.

I just don't think anything currently is going to wow me over the Rift S, so will hold off and see maybe what next year or so brings.

I am very happy with the Rift S, it's not a perfect VR experience, but it's a heck of a lot of fun.

Also... it makes DCS VR no longer a novelty. You will want to use it for flying.

Wearing headphones unfortunately is needed to get both full immersion and to hear everything well. But that's ok.

I am flying all the time with my Rift S now - flat screen be damned (just for reviewing Tacview afterwards). It is not perfect but it is a great experience, night and day compared to my ultrawide display with tracking. The price for entry is a real plus as well. If money is no object then there may be better options (Index, Reverb, Pimax) but for a value proposition to enter the VR world it is hard to beat.

I ordered it today, lol.

Between the Reverb problems, Index waiting period and having next week off, it wasn't a hard decision in the end :pilotfly:

Trigger pulled! It seems to be getting the best ratings for performance and pricing combined. Newegg was sold out so I went the Best Buy route with free shipping and a expected arrival day of this Friday. I'm so weak!!

In exactly the same boat - was holding out for the Reverb - but sheesh after the huge issues they are having and the fact HP now are not even giving out headsets anymore even as replacements for faulty ones, just straight to a refund. Not good.

Pulled the trigger on a Rift S and it arrived yesterday - first impression jumping in the Harrier was like WOAH WTF - text on the MPCD's and HUD was so clear it was freaky.

Few minor issues with infrequent white flash, and the view resetting outside the aircraft (issue limited to DCS,) but I am sure they will get fixed in time. The CV1 was a bit of a dud when it first arrived too - but was working flawlessly in the end.

Just bought the Rift S from Best Buy today and after work will pick it up. Had Rift CV1, Pimax 5K+, sold both and currently using SO+ for DCS VR, hope the Rift S is a bump up. Still have 15 days to return it if its not.

Count me in as a Rift S owner after the HP reverb...

I was one of the lucky HP Reverb owners. It was a fantastic headset and soooo close to being perfect. Sadly, I was getting the shutdown and flashing issues with it. HP on their part were fantastic. Replacements are not being given, but refunds are.

I couldn't do without VR so grabbed a Rift S last week off of Amazon. To be honest, I'm pretty blown away by it. The resolution is not Reverb level, but quite honestly, the reverb's 250 dollar premium is not worth it *for me*. Performance wise, the Rift S is better (I5 8700K, RTX 2070) which would make sense.

In short, I'll stick with the Rift until the next gens come out. It's been a surprise.

Distance spotting is not nearly as nice though???

Reverb was definitely better at distance spotting. But it was not "night and day" better than the Rift S. Still, the Reverb does better in that area. I also do civ sims (x-plane) and the Rift S does fantastic with it. So much so that I'll take the Rift S over Reverb alone with it. The performance is better with it. (I5-8600k rtx2070)

It simply comes down with me to price. If I had never tried the S, than I would be waiting on the Reverb redo. Having the S now and seeing the difference between them, the 250 dollar premium is not worth it to me. I honestly did not see the S being as good as it is. It's comfortable, setup is a breeze, my glasses fit fine underneath it, and I use external speakers.

Heck I don't even mind the speakers on the Rift S! I know, right?!?

We've got cats running around and my wife stalking me when I am flying. She took pictures of me while I was air to air refueling...such a strange look on my face locked onto something no one else is seeing!

It's nice to have some of the real world leaking through...I can keep tabs on jumping pets and people trying to embarrass me! :D

Really happy with it so far and I think it will only get better with updates and upgrades.

That's a big factor for me. I won't get rift S, but I also probably won't be changing headsets (vive in my case) for the time being, and can see the logic in getting the S over the others.

Performance is over and above all other considerations. I think if I got a headset with great resolution and bad performance, it would get to the point where I couldn't fly with it (performance) and couldn't fly without it (go back to the vive), so I would end up not even using VR, as insane as that might sound!
