Ka-50 Pitbuild Update - 12. november 2008 - Collective brake Hydraulics

The mechanic Collective Brake is discarded.! Although it workes fine, it just did'nt feel like the real thing should.. And I REALLY want it to feel solid and have constant resistance forces where it should... Not feel the notches on the webstrap as it glides over the rollers, and have a 2,5cm play up and down when ity should just STOP..!

So I did some thinking, and I looked at the hydraulic dampener I made for the pedals.. I got me two more of those (see picture1) that actually are door-dampeners made so your doors don't slam shut in the wind:

doordampenerbm4.jpg

They are about 10 Euro, so I got a couple to experiment with.

All I wanted was the cylinder and the piston, so I had to open it up and remove the return-spring inside of it.

So I cut arround the rear end of the cylinder:

diyoildampener4zh4.jpg

Pulled the rear end off:

diyoildampener3xt9.jpg

Used a Dremel to grind down the part of the thread that had been compressed by the manufacturer to prevent the buyer unscrew the piston completely from its axle..

diyoildampener9qn4.jpg

And out came the pieces:

diyoildampener8jv8.jpg

Now the return-spring we don't need

diyoildampener7nn2.jpg

so chuck that away (in some box or a drawer.. you'll most likely find a need for it):

diyoildampener6nd8.jpg

Now we need a means of getting the oil from inside the dampener and through a valve that control the Collective Brake. I opted for making this hole through the allready pre-drilled rear loolink like this:

diyoildampener11bn0.jpg

After drilling it should look something like this:

diyoildampener10pl0.jpg

Now cut the damn thing shorter if you want.. I did shorten it by 100mm:

ka50collectivestickdampap2.jpg

The I cut the front end of a Brass connection from wher ever (I cant remember) and simply RAMMED IT IN WITH A HAMMER..! Dam therapeutic job that for a frustrated Norwegian.. I really got in contact with the brutal old Viking side of me..! And it came out lokking like a you-know-what:

ka50collectivestickdampzj0.jpg

Now thread the open end and insert a 5mm set-screw with some thead-tape (like plumbers use):

ka50collectivestickdampqj9.jpg

ka50collectivestickdampkz9.jpg

And that will take care of that..!

PLEASE REMEMBER TO DRILL A HOLE SO THE OIL CAN ENTER TO THE BRASS TUBE..! (i didn't... and it sucked:doh:)

The System Completly Assembled

As you see from the pics the oil-level rises and falls in the resarvoir as the piston pressed.. Now imagine a valve between the oil-dampener and the resavoir closing the oilflow.. And there you have it..!

Part 2

It will sit on the Collective Mechanics approximately like this:

ka50collectivestickdampoh5.jpg

Only on the INSIDE stupid..:smilewink:

The Colective Stick will have a valve (not sure of the type valve though.. I'm thinking maybe NOT this one.. LoL)

ka50collectivestickdampxc7.jpg

Also the Collective Brake Handle got an upgrade so I got rid of the extra play in it..!

ka50collectivestickdampiq6.jpg

And all that is left is to assemble everything and fiddle with it till it works..!:helpsmilie:

So your going to use FFB in the rudder pedals? Dude I want some of what your smoking :music_whistling::D

Peace out 'bro.. I totally will have the most excelent Force Feedback thingie workin' on my pedals.. (puff puff).. I just had to after The Oh So glorious Urze Mentor (..bowing in respect..) led me down the path of enlightment towards my destiny..

Man... I can tell you !

That's excellent stuff!

I have also a whole bag of this herb at home....

Shhhh.. Everyone.. He speaks now..

I tried smoking that stuff but all I want to do now is veg out............. yes good stuff gotta go.............munchies.....

He He.. But seriously. After reading a Pdf dokument released by Bell Helicopters on theys 206 series and Force-Trim functions. And seing Urze's video with the Cougar/Force Feedback hybrid, and how good that worked I capitulated.. I am now a huge fan of DCS/BS with Force Feedback Joystick.. It completely changes the way you fly this whirly-bird (or rather the way you don't without it!).

As for the Pedals I am wayting for a Steeringwheel with FFB that has been ordered to Hack..!

My next post will be the incorparation of a Microsoft Sidewinder 2 Force Feedback Joystick Mechanics into the Front Pedestal and connecting it to my Home-brew Ka-50 Stick with the trigger mechanism that I most likely NEVER will be satisfied with..

But Today is also a day of joy because...

THE X/Y TABLE WITH NEW STEPPER MOTORS IS DONE..!

So tonight I'll be connecting all the electronics and Powersupply and sit there watching as it goes "Wrrrrrrrrrrr...."

quick question...what is the purpose of the stepp motor?

The Stepper motors controlled by a computer, and it drives the X, Y and Z axis on the mill. So that I can first make a CAD drawing of the Panels or Parts, And have the CnC Mill cut it out precisly like I want it to be (Things like the Panels with text backlighted. Or knobs, Gauges, and of course the trigger mechanism).

Very nice Trigger , but where did the stepper motor for the Z axis go to?, you had it before.

Oh it will be there my friend.. I just did'nt bother attaching the new stepper motor for these pics..

And it WORKS..! So now I'm of to get me some 5-8mm axle connectors.. Yahoo..! I can finally continue on the panels now..!

Hey Alex..:smilewink:

Where have you been lately..? I saw the units you made for firing rockjets from your RC Heli.. REAL COOL..!

Got some questions about those... he he..

Here are some pictures on my Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback MOD for the Front Pedestal.. I'll be testing it tonight.. And making a more complete update for you all..

Now If I can just trick HPO into making a better Trigger Mechanism for me I'de be on my way.. LoL

Hey trigger, I wasn't satisfied with my salary in the company. So I took a private project from a customer in southern China, and I've been designing a thermalstat. It's a very intense task and almost consumed all my spare time.

The rocket heli, HOhoo....it was HILARIOUS! Like I said I had my friend dr. Kenney fire the shots. Dr. Kenney is the kind of doctor who doesn't heal people, lol. It turned out well though.

If you got any question regarding the multi-channel fire controller, I think it's better for us to discuss in that crazy neighbor thread.

MAN oh man! you have come along way since the start of this thread!!!

I gotta learn how to give "rep" to ppl cuz you defiantly earned some!

truly great stuff gooing on here. and i realize that I'm running behind so I'd better start cracking haven't I ;)

QUICK Update

The DIY hydrailics system works like a charm..! It really feels more like the real thing (or at least a Eurocopter Collective)..
