Hello ED:

Giving the user the option of showing the virtual pilot body can help significantly increase immersion for those who want to use that feature. However, the pilot body can obscure the visibility of the many control switches and doodads in the cockpit. My request is that there be an option to not only display the pilot body but also give the option to make it transparent - see through - so to make seeing cockpit control elements easier to see and use. Having the transparency controlled by a slider from 0 to 100 will let anyone set it how they like it.

It's not a big deal, but it would help those who like to look down and around and see a virtual human form in the seat.

EDIT: I've come to the conclusion it's more practical to bind a button to switch him on and off when needed.

I thought about having a "see through spot" attached to the interaction cursor could work. Maybe it could start when the cursor is active and time out a short time after it isn't moved. So instead of the whole pilot model transparent just a window 10-20cm across or so.

It would be fun to have the pilot body in the cockpit (and probably more so in VR) but it always feels like an annoyance since it can get in the way.

Transparency is expensive for game engines. Each layer of transparency requires extra draw call on everything it's overlaying. Also called overdraw. And then it has to do depth sorting. That's why game engines tries to use mask rather than transparency whenever possible.

Sure it's expensive, but when many of us have over a grand "invested" into our DCS content, I would expect the developers to be able to sort out these problems.

Lest folks forget - and many have - this is a super premium game costing many hundreds of dollars. People who buy into such games are a type of "luxury" buyer and should be considered as such accordingly by the developers...but I digress...

The appearance of the pilot body and the interactivity of the cockpit control elements are a tricky matter to harmonize it seems.

I have my pilot body toggle bound to a hotas switch . Simple . Effective . And no further performance loss in an already-marginal VR title .

I didn't mean expensive as in money. Expensive on system resources.

Ima try this... thumbup.gif

You already have transparent Pilot body. Only it is 100% transparent when it is on.

ok...

understood - since the game is not inexpensive they have the funds to solve these demanding things. But it doesn't matter. It's a feature they will likely never include.

Yeah, while neat sounding in principle, I think about the amount of performance it would eat in VR is not trivial, and when with a 9700k/2080ti I'm getting poor frame rates already, and the new gen vid cards even the 3090 don't look like they will really improve the situation much, which is just absurd on a great many levels.

So here is where I am now...
