I used to work on both the Gazelle and Lynx, both are fine helicopters, however the Gazelle always made me think it would fall out the air at any moment because the engine always sounded like a bucket of loose bolts lol :pilotfly:

was that AAC? Middle wallop perhaps?

Except the Hind's rotor spins the other direction, so you never run out of left pedal, you run out of right pedal when you're heavy at OGE hover. ;)

That was my first idea, too. :D

But I just love these urban legends.

Funny story about the hind, there was a guy in Korea flying around one day and encountered a Hind on the other side of the border.

I've heard the same story. Except it was East Germany during the cold war, and the US helicopter was a Cobra...

Yeah, it never ceases to amaze me the stories that get passed down as fact from generation to generation and are taken as fact when they are not fact at all. (e.g. "can't shoot a person with a .50 cal", etc.)

They do make for nice stories, though! :D

That you can't shoot a person with a .50cal is just Army regulations. You can fire at a weapon in position (Fx. two infantrymen firing an LMG from the prone) though, because that is thought to be a bigger threat than a rifleman running around with his 5.56 rifle.

[EDIT] Gaaarrgh... I didn't realise I wasn't on the last page of the thread....so I didn't quote who I was replying to [/EDIT]

Exactly my point. This is NOT TRUE. You engage the enemy with whatever weapon you have on hand and take into account the possibility of collateral damage. Other than that, shoot a man with your 120mm, it's all good. There is no "you have to aim at his equipment" crap, that's all just a popular myth. And if you were told this during basic training, your instructors lied to you. Or more likely, they were told the same thing and nobody ever thought to contradict them, so they took it as fact and then it just gets handed down from generation to generation.

Cobra

I like the sound of the Huey engine although I don't know if it actually uses the same engine anymore but from the ones I've heard it sounds pretty cool anyway. Also I like skids on a chopper, for some reason it looks better to me... As you can see my decision is based purely on what matters in an attack helicopter, sound and looks ;)

not to worry this has been implemented in my sound mod ..soon enjoy

I think the best is my all time favourite from back here in South Africa, the Rooivalk (or Redkestral) in english.

I put it as my favourite due to its russian ruggedness, and western avianics.

For me, Bell AH-1 Sea/SuperCobra, Bell OH-58 Longbow, Mil Mi-35 Hind E, Westland Lynx, Aérospatiale Gazelle and Agusta A129 Mangusta. In the DCS I would like to see Cobra and Longbow. Guys brought up some support helos, so here are mine, Bell UH-1N Huey (this one is love, I have contact with one Bell 212 Huey a lot of time) and Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk.

You guys "all" love AH-64D. I like it too. In fact I like all the helos so it´s pretty hard and pain to choose. :megalol:

Best regards. :thumbup::joystick::pilotfly:

Bell OH-58 Longbow

OH-58A/C is the "Kiowa"

OH-58D is the "Kiowa Warrior"

AH-64A/D without Radar is the "Apache"

AH-64D with Longbow Radar is the "Longbow Apache"

In practice, the Longbow Radar is often removed because it's not very helpful in fighting insurgents, and removing it saves a bit of weight.

On that note, I have to say that my favorite combat helicopter is the Apache, but I'm biased because I worked on them for 6 years.

The AH-64A/D does not exist, only AH-64A without radar and AH-64D with the radar Longbow

There exists many AH-64Ds without radar as well, and they are known as Apaches, like the AH-64As. Only the AH-64Ds which have radar are called Longbows (or Apache Longbow), as it's the radar itself which is named Longbow.
