Nice, im from Haynesville. Living here in Lancaster now. F-35's are fun to work on, great to see the technology first hand.

I bet it is and I'm sure you see some other cool stuff there. I didn't want to move to California, hate their dumb laws and prices are high.

lol

i must give it to the entrepreneurs the americans.. they made a sure win-win concept,

the "to big to fail" concept from the big banks was successfully transferred to fighter

aviation where all the US "allies" are now forced to piggy up no matter the problems

or financial considerations..

At this point it would be totally stupid for US to actually fix the problems, but more or

less continue with the "problems" and dry the allies ..well dry.. lol.. what are they going to

do, they invested so much money no other alternative.. its best business concept ever,

like taking a rich guy son hostage and threatening him unless you succeed in business..

its proof-save tactic..

The more i look at this mess the more it seems this is done on purpose, US must be lol-ing

at all this while the "allies" must be feeling quite "smart")) lol..

New gun integration is not easy. A 25mm gun was abandoned for the F-15 for example.

Also, I have some doubts regarding the allies not knowing when the software for the gun would come in. They were probably part of the decision making process regarding battle readiness.

How risky was it for the F-117?

The F-35 is a strike fighter. And even when used for patrol by countries like Australia or Canada, the likelihood of getting into a dogfight is diminished. (Plus at the point, they may as well mount the external pylons for the heaters).

It won't carry heat seekers and has no gun. This sounds risky.

Yeah, but this problem surfacing now? I wouldn't call the gun an unimportant subsystem which may well be finished by the end of the aircraft's development cycle -- but that appears to be what happens.

Story looks legit, I mean its on the same page as a Kim Kardashian breaking the internet story...

Disclaimer: I don't have a clue as to whether or not the information in that article is correct.

For instance, nothing said there was backed up by a link to other sources, so the author could have just made it up or fundamentally misunderstood his AF sources.

There are also simple to spot errors like calling the AMRAAM a "long" range missile, whereas the acronym clearly indicates otherwise.

But I would like to question the validity of the "guilty by association" argument -- what do links on a "Read this" list have to do with the article's contents?

If you have further insight into what's wrong with the article, we'd all profit if you shared it, though.

What kind of a gun is that that it needs 4 years for its "software" (wth???) to be debugged??

Is a turret?

If that plane is given to russians they will fit a gunner inside that hull in 4 weeks if necessary. :D

How is this different from the F-104 and all the problems it had when it first introduce the M61? Even back then when many aircraft enter service with very dangerous faults (i.e. the downward ejection system of the F-104A, etc.) they still had problems introducing the M61. Additionally, the initial request for the m61 was in the late 40's and did not enter service until the mid 50's. I it seem comparable to the new gun in the F-35 AFAIK.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

I dont agree... I mean look at the entire picture. Do you think F-35s would be flying alone in the sky? I doubt it... I am sure F-22's and others would be tasked with clearing the skies... I dont think the situation is comparable at all... I am sure things will arise that they will need to adjust the aircraft... but its early to be calling it a lemon or that they arent looking at the bigger picture. I am sure we all know better than these guys do of course ;)

I don't understand your response. I was referring to the supposedly problems with implementing the gun in the F-35. I did not read the F-35 article, I was just talking about and comparing problems with the introduction of the M61 and the GAU-22,

Perhaps I misread yours too... sorry for that... I'll go back to shooting stuff with my 109 now :)

I dont want to be caught up in the whole debate

But IMHO i think the F-35 has the possibility to be an amazing aircraft. If it did not they would hope fully have stoped developing.

But i also think the teething issues have the possibility to destroy the aircraft in many minds.

And personally i don't like the idea to have a completely computer reliant aircraft, but thats me.

But sithspawn, We armchair engineers and pilots always know better. :P
