gnirtS Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Is there any way to start all the campaign missions "cold and dark"? In most of them you start spooled and ready to go. If not, seems a bit ridiculous having a massively detailed game if a large chunk of it is never needed for the biggest part of the game.
NullCharacter Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 The only way is to open each of the missions in the editor and change the state of your helicopter from "Takeoff from runway" to "Takeoff from parking". [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
TimA Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I agree that it would be a nice option to be able to start the missions from cold and dark.
miguez Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 It would certainly be more realistic, unless in real combat situations the ground crew fires up the chopper to save time? Not sure on this one.
Debio Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 It would certainly be more realistic, unless in real combat situations the ground crew fires up the chopper to save time? Not sure on this one. at least in the military groups that i have had friends in, the ground crew does not start the aircraft for the pilots in combat situations, that i have heard of. however, there are sometimes flight crews on standby ready to go, but usually the sorties are planned out and pilots head to their birds at the appointed time.
gnirtS Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 Certainly can't see any pilot not doing his own checks and procedures and trusting it to someone else. They dont just turn up, strap in and go. I assume from the above there is no way to set the game to this, which is a shame and defeats the point of a lot of it.
SunDown Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I agree. A little disappointed that all campaign missions don't start from the ramp, cold and dark. C Co 6-6 CAV USLANTCOM
EvilBivol-1 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 IMHO, it's a design decision with the larger audience in mind (those who will pick the sim up at the store, bring it home, install it and try the campaign ASAP). It would be nice if there was an automated way to select this though. 1 - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. The Parable of Jane's A-10 Forum Rules
sobek Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 It would be nice if there was an automated way to select this though. I second that. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
gnirtS Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 IMHO, it's a design decision with the larger audience in mind (those who will pick the sim up at the store, bring it home, install it and try the campaign ASAP). Possibly but id venture that most people not using easy flight option want to go for as much detail as possible. That involves bringing up all the systems and adds a new element - things you forget or do wrong can hurt you etc. There are already options menu overrides for things like unit of measurement to apply to all missions etc. I'd love to see a "always cold and dark" option as well there. Just a tick box.
Airway Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Well gnirtS, whatever one does, he does it 50% wrong. If they had designed all mission so that you liked them, then there were others complaining why all missions were designed as cold start missions. Simply take it as it is or edit the missions, as there is no solution yet to easily choose a mission to start the helicopter running or cold start, aye? ;)
gnirtS Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 Well gnirtS, whatever one does, he does it 50% wrong. Not really, its a simple fix to offer both options. Simply take it as it is or edit the missions, as there is no solution yet to easily choose a mission to start the helicopter running or cold start, aye? ;) Extracting the campaign and editing every single mission isnt going to be exactly quick to do.
Airway Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 No not quick, but it is a workaround. You simply have to set the first waypoint as start from parking. Who knows if they will add an option to offer both options. Would be nice indeed :)
SunDown Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 The only problem with that though is the timing of the mission. You would have to back the mission start time out a little to make up for the start up. It is what it is. Minor issue in the grand scope of this sim. I'm sure user campaigns will start poping up in a couple weeks that will include the ramp start. Thats why they make the editor. They know they can't make everyone happy, but they can offer the tools for us to be happy with our own imaginations. That was deep. SunDown 1 C Co 6-6 CAV USLANTCOM
gear_monkey Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Just FYI guys, but in Vietnam and other conflicts, where situations allowed, crew chiefs were mostly responsible for aircraft pre-flight and start-up. The pilots came right from mission briefing to a running aircraft ready to go. So its not totally unrealistic 1 Win 10 64bit; 32 GB DDR4 3200 Ram; ASUS MoBo; 1TB SSD;Intel i7 8700K; GTX 1080ti 11GB; Thrustmaster Warthog;Odyssey + VR
Gael Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 If a pilot doesn't trust his crew chiefs I would ask him to mantain, repair and refuel the aircraft himself. Perhaps even design and built it, in order to avoid evil engineers :P
agamemnon_b5 Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Can't speak for all militaries and situations but the following is based on my experiences for my unit and SOP from our major command: For normal missions: We knew 48 hours out of the mission(s). Day of consisted of a brief two hours prior to take-off time. About an hour out both pilots and crew chiefs/gunners pre-flighted the aircraft. Standby/contingencies: If we assumed MEDEVAC escort duties (we were a UH-60 unit so that was new for us) major command SOP dictated that we had to have blades spinning within three minutes of the alarm sounding and be up in the air and on our way within seven minutes. The gunships in our area operated similar to us for both preplanned and last minute ops. If an aircraft had to return to base for maintenace anyone avalible (including operations personnel as we had been given instruction on preflighting aircraft since we were a small detachment from our main battalion) assisted in preflight. The pilot in command (PC), maintenace officer, and the duty officer made the determination if an aircraft had to be switched out. Probably not much to do with this game so consider this your "useless information for the day." 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Just a tick box. Here's one person who flies on full realism that doesn't want to ramp start it every single time he plays a campaign mission. If there was a choice, I'd probably pick start on runway or taxi to runway every time, just to save time. I'm all for the choice though.
Layklant Posted January 21, 2009 Posted January 21, 2009 Would be great to have an options for "Cold and Dark"!
Ramstein Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 (edited) I am still having a problem with mission I make that start with the engines off. I try to have the mission start with 'Take-off from Runway' and the engine stil are not running when the mission starts. What is wrong? BTW, this is in offline mode, I will check again for Online mode. Ok, the mission when in multiplayer online mode, the engine is running at the start of the mission when 'starting from runway'. Can't it be set to do this when flown in single player offline mode? thanx.. :joystick: Edited February 8, 2009 by Ramstein ASUS Strix Z790-H, i9-13900, WartHog HOTAS and MFG Crosswind G.Skill 64 GB Ram, 2TB SSD EVGA Nvidia RTX 2080-TI (trying to hang on for a bit longer) 55" Sony OLED TV, Oculus VR
maskim Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Takeoff from runway means running engines, takeoff from parking is the cold state.
Frederf Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Would be great to have an options for "Cold and Dark"! The patch is going to have campaigns start cold and dark... no option, but a change.
