Hi all, apologise if this has already been queried & also apologise for putting this into the BUGS section as I don't believe it's a BUG but I didn't know where else to list this.
In the ME, Category under Air Defenses there is listed MANPADS SA-18 Igla-S "Grouse", Country being Russia. And in the Encyclopedia under Air Defense there is MANPADS Igla-S - shooter ( Russia ) Name: 9K338 Igla-S (SA-24 Grinch)
So my questions are.. is the ME version the same as the Encyclopedia?  If it is, is it a SA-24 or a SA-18 ?  Can someone clear this up for me?

Regards GA

Hi Gaz.

If it says Igla-S ( Russian 9K338) then it's SA-24. Older Igla (Needle) missiles would be SA-18 (Russian 9K38) and SA-16 (Russian 9K310).

What is registered in the log when it's in the air / hits?

That will answer the question which 9k missile is in the he tube.

Although when I am on the receiving end of it I care only if it guides to my flares and not my aircraft. I won't have neither time nor possibility of finding out exact model while it's flying in my direction.

It can be as well Stinger or any other MANPADS for that matter. Just evade and drop flares. Revenge with 20 mike mike or or that big Sharky gun before the guy puts the next one on his shoulder.

Thanks for your reply Gierasimov.

The SA-18 & SA-24 are two different MANPADS as the SA-24 is superior as it has a longer range.

Therefore the SA-18 Igla-S "Grouse" listed in ME as I've shown should be listed as SA-24 Igla-S "Grinch" as in the DCS Encyclopedia.

Not a BUG but a ME error. True?

ED Please fix.

Thanks, bye bye 🙂

Issue reported. 👍

Can you please check which missile is in this unit? It could be that it's wrongly labeled in Encyclopedia and still correct in the game or it could be the other way around.

I also wonder about an actual answer to this. My impression has long been that; Russian units are named Igla-S, insurgents are named Igla, but in practice they seem to fire the exact same missile with same capabilities.

As an aside, I really believe we need more MANPADS types in DCS that range from old to new and east to west. At the very least Strela-2 and Redeye would be nice. But ideally we'd have in addition to those older Stinger blocks, Strela-3, their Chinese equivalents, Igla-1, Igla, Igla-S, as well as maybe some more oddball stuff like blowpipe etc.

Even during the Vietnam War, Strela-2 was a present threat for helicopters and prop aircraft. As it is, we are forced to either leave out any form of MANPADS for 60s-70s scenarios, or make it unfair for aircraft of that vintage by pitting them against a late-ish Stinger or Igla, both options are unrealistic in their own way. Besides, older MANPADS are arguably still an ever present threat all around the world even if modern aircraft are a lot less likely to catch one.

It's a bit of a mess - while the NATO designation and reporting name is wrong for the Igla-S (as you correctly stated, it should be SA-24 Grinch), they both fire the same missile.

As for what that missile is supposed to be? Not sure - the missile is called "Igla-S" on the DCS infobar (i.e the 9M342), but has 9M39 written on the side of it (the missile for the Igla [SA-18 Grouse]).

Unfortunately DCS is like this with a few SAMs:

  • Our SA-2 is supposed to be an S-75M Volkhov [SA-2d Guideline mod 1] which is supposed to fire the V-755 (20D) missile, which is what the infobar calls it, but the missile has 11DU written on the side of it, which is the V-750VM missile for the SA-75 Dvina.
  • The SA-8 has the vehicle of the 9K33M3 Osa-AKM [SA-8b Gecko Mod 1], but fires missiles that seem more in line with the 9K33M2 Osa-AK [SA-8b Gecko Mod 1].
  • The SM-2 has the guidance of the SM-1, which is the missile the Oliver Hazard Perry should fire (and not the SM-2).
