Stutters & jerky movement

Recommended Posts

DCS ran fine on my old laptop with a 2060 and 32GB RAM. Around 40-60 FPS.

Now I got a new laptop, 3070 with 32GB RAM. It runs like a dream, 80-100 FPS.

However, I'm getting little stutters, pauses, jerky movements. Both when I move my head around or look at the ground move at low altitudes.

Any typical things that could cause this? Maybe it's because I have a 300Hz screen?

What I've tried but in vain:

- Added DCS to the antivirus exceptions

- Disabled hot plug

- disabled Power in services.msc

Thanks in advance for any advice.

without knowing your hardware or set up, if you are running windows 11 make sure you have turned off Memory Optimisation and the VMP Options to Optimize Gaming Performance in Windows 11 - Microsoft Support

also try 59 , some people noted that was "better" than 60

also you might try limiting to the frame rate of your camera if that is different or one below

Thanks, I already had these settings. Also, I only have 60 and 300 as options.

Instead of forcing refresh to 60, In nvidia control panel try actually limiting the fps( if you havent). I cap mine, oddly enough at 61fps. Leaving my monitor at 120hz in windows. HAGS off in Win11.   I turn v-sync on in nvidia and triple buffering so v-sync gets one extra frame queue. Negative LOD set to clamp, power setting to max performance, Nvidia low latency mode to off( believe it or not).  That gives me as smooth of trackir movement as I can get. I do still get the little micro stutters when rolling the aircraft and looking sideways now and then. With Trackir at least, it seems that if you can keep 120fps all the time, things are very smooth, but anything between 60-120 especially in the mid 80’s/90/s seems to be the worst. Its a real pain to try to get rid of. Its got to be something with the way dcs processes everything. 60fps may not sound fun when your pc has the ability to go higher, but I just see it as giving it overhead to crank the graphics up and still give it some breathing room 🙂

Many thanks for the help everyone, now it runs smooth as silk!

This is what I did that I hadn't done before:

- ran DCS and Facetrack as admin

-GPU scheduler OFF

- set my pagefile to min/max 24576

- Vsync off in game

- Vsinc on in NVCP

- Triple buffering on

- Limited my FPS to 60 in the NVCP

- Set my monitor settings back to 300 everywhere else

Hey @Reflected  i used FacetrackNoIR but it was just bad. Now i use OpenTrack and AItrack and works very good, if you are interested, i will post here my settings, so you can get it work perfect.

Dont forget to activate the Ultra low Latency Mode in nVidia Settings, this makes the whole game smooth like butter, i am not joking, and headtracking will work without problems.

Thats it...

Thanks, does that track your face or do I need some sort of headset?

AI track just tracks your face, no headset needed, but the webcam you use can be a limiting factor. If its only capable of 30fps, then you will end up in the same boat, with jumpy/ delayed movements( compared to a powered headset and a ps3 eye or trackir camera). Before using trackir I actually had better performance with tracknoir over opentrack, but that was quite a few years ago. Things may have changed a lot. I’m sure the system its on and how much time you spend tuning it can vary performance quite a bit too. Open track and AI track are  free so its worth a shot for sure🤷‍♂️

@Reflected & @MadKreator

You just need a 60FPS Webcam. I bought mine for 50$ and works fantastic. Before i got my 60FPS Webcam i bought a 30FPS for 5 $ and it was working well, but it was like DCS runs on 30 FPS lol.

Since i use the 60FPS Webcam, runs the same like TrackIR (i had one for years  then i got VR and i sold mine)

And to configure the AITRACK and OpenTrack is easy, way easy as trackir and it works perfect, you dont need adjustments etc. Dont forget the Ultra low Latency Mode in nVidia Settings.

depends on which version of DCS you are using .. but you have 6 P cores and 8 e cores, DCS shouldn't be using the e-Cores , and you have another 6 threads for the P cores giving you 20 total cores available so 25% sounds about right, it would be fully utilsing 4 threads on the p-cores? are you using MT ?

I did a test yesterday with a simple mission I use for aiming training (a FW190D9 VS a B17G)

Usually I get some stutters when B17G gunners start to fire for first time. With MultiThread the FPS drop, but in SingleThread the issue is with sound.

I tested the config provided by Reflected adjusted to my rig

-GPU scheduler OFF

- Vsync off in game

- Vsinc on in NVCP

- Triple buffering on

- Limited my FPS to 60 in the NVCP

I deleted fxo and metashaders2 folders.

After that the first time I launched the mission in MT the stutters went away, but the second time I launched the mission they came back again.

Later today or during weekend I'll repeat the mission to confirm the results.

I agree a 60fps webcam will do just fine. I only had a 30 sitting around and I knew it wouldn’t work as well as I wanted. But the concept is all very promising. I don’t mind having the head tracker unit on my headphones ( I use a 3d printed wireless one) because I always have my headphones on no matter what game I’m playing. But if anyone is looking for a head tracking solution without a track IR type of system, a 60 fps webcam and AI track should do well enough.

No Its its own software to go along with open track.. technically still in "alpha". https://github.com/AIRLegend/aitrack

When I open Armoury crate, my cpu clock is around 2-3000, never goes near 4000, is that normal?

The CPU will only run as fast as it needs too. What it is most likely telling you is that your CPU isn’t actually working that hard. I have my ASUS AI Overclock on that claims 6.1Ghz but I’ve never seen it actually run close to that. Chances are those high numbers are just performance metrics saying the CPU COULD boost that high if it needs to. Under normal operation, you usually won’t see those high numbers…. Now that being said, on the other hand the CPU will throttle its speeds if the temperature gets too high, to protect itself. It would be a good idea to monitor the temp under load too, just for piece of mind. Temperature can be a big player in performance, if the CPU and GPU start to throttle.

On a side note: Curious why you set 24gig pagefile and not 32 gig? I’ve always seen NL, BN, Special K and others recommend a 32 gig page file.  Honestly I don’t know if it makes that much difference. I’m actually curious for my own knowledge why you picked 24, because I don’t know any better.

To add to my above comment. Your new cpu has more cores and threads to spread out the load. It doesn’t always need to run super high speeds to accomplish the same amount of work as a cpu with less cores would. When I’m playing DCS MT even on a heavy Liberation mission I rarely see my CPU run over 20% once everything is loaded up and running on i7-13700k cpu.
