I am on Windows 11 22H2. Windows is inviting me to update my system to 23H2 now. Is anyone else on 23H2 that can confirm it is ok to do the 23H2 Update? My understanding is that we will lose WMR in 24H2 later this year so no more updates after this one?

A guy in the comments below the video wrote, 23H2 is ok per now.

Te Article shows:
"In December 2023, Microsoft announced the end of its Windows Mixed Reality VR platform. A little later, the company shared more details about the future of Windows Mixed Reality, promising to remove the platform from future versions of Windows 11"

For me it sounds like they will delete it complete. Hopefully some smart Coders may developing a alternate software solution.

24H2 = Second half (H2) 2024; not very likely before July, but likely thereafter, and more so as time goes on.  (I am not privileged to their deployment schedule, and most anything else would be speculative for now).

Free professional advice: Do not rely upon any advice concerning computers from anyone who uses the terms "beast" or "rocking" to refer to computer hardware.  Just...don't.  You've been warned.

While we're at it, people should stop using the term "uplift" to convey "increase".  This is a technical endeavor, we're not in church or at the movies - and it's science, not drama.

Win 11 23h2 is fine. Make sure to block automatic updates.

This really pisses me off. No word at all on the HP website and they are still selling the G2 with no mention at all of the problem.

Is there any indication that vendors producing these VRs would make effort to port this to the new platform?

This is not cheap peace of hardware to be dropped just like that.

The least M$ could do is open source WMR

I would say you need to reach the vendors of VRs, they are supposed to support their products. It is not uncommon that new OS arrives within 10 years of product release.

Agree. I just asked HP on the Reverb G2 page about their plan.

Can someone explain what exactly is happening?

As far as I understood the WMR software and drivers just won't come with any newer versions of Windows anymore. But I understood there's an offline installer and you can still keep using it.

I am confused whether 24H2 is actually going to make the G2 unusuable regardless of whether the WMR software is installed or not.

Microsoft is a dick for what they are doing, but we knew the end of WMR was coming and I have a hard time believing they will completely brick our devices within a few months notice.

I think the following might stop working (with the little help of ChatGPT):

  1. Acer Windows Mixed Reality Headset
  2. Dell Visor
  3. HP Reverb G2
  4. Lenovo Explorer
  5. Samsung HMD Odyssey/Odyssey+
  6. Asus Windows Mixed Reality Headset

Unless the vendors of headset provided the alternative software support.

I would really like to know how to prevent Windows updates once and for all.... I'm currently on 10, I have tried various attempts from the internet to prevent updates..all, up to now have failed. I boot up a day or so later and up comes "restart your computer to install updates"

Winds me through the roof 🙂 🙂

So it's time to move from a g2 to a quest 3 or wait ? Because now there is a chance to sell the g2 in a while will be a brick, or you will have to tweak the system

Today I received two WMR updates for OpenXR in the Microsoft Store. I don't know what this is all about.

it takes more time, effort, money to remove something that's programmed into the O/S, rather than to just drop it and remove it from their store. (say it's unsupported from whatever date forward). Last time they tried to do a feature removal, it caused issues, as other features still relied on some of the libraries, lol.

99% chance, even after they say it's removed, all the files and system will remain, but MS will say it's un supported.

Long after the death of Windows Media Center Edition, the files are still on my Windows 7 rig, and still work w/ a little tweaking and library registering.

there's way to many users out there for MS to simply wipe it from windows, and even if they did, there's a good chance the community would develop a 3rd party app/driver to interface it with another API.

The product released in 2020 will be dropped from support, I do not think this is ok.

I was close at some point to buying and I am glad I did not, but the culprits here are both Microsoft and vendors who did not watch for this.
