Question: Do you use rudder during the break, and again during the final 27-31 degree turn to carrier before the groove?

I never have in the past, tbh I barely use rudder at all in the hornet aside from taxing, it doesn't have much effect compared to the Eagle or Viper.

Just curious as to what you fly. I've never seen rudder mention in NATOPS, just 27-30 degrees bank at 1.3-1.5 miles abeam the ship, with the VV right below the 0 bracket.

Thanks.

I've never seen any significant adverse yaw due to roll with the gear down, so I suspect that means the FCS cancels it out with rudder by itself.  If that's the case, why would you use any additional rudder?

Yep that's it, FCS takes care of it, in non ACM flight you'd only use the pedals if you wanted an intentional yaw. Sweeping strafe for example.

Okay, thought so. Just was curious with the new slow speed flight changes. Thanks for the help!

Yeah I don’t think you use the rudder in normal turns since the Hornet is FBW

ailerons are for turning

Actually they’re for rolling 😉

Turning requires all three axes one of which (yaw) is automatically controlled in the Hornet.

In general, fighters hardly need to use the rudder in flight. But on approach to land  (or even to a target), rudder may be used since you want to keep wings level. Also on landing roll, if a/c starts drifting left/right, it is better corrected with the rudder.

The Hornet doesn’t require rudder to level the wings on approach. The FCS on the Hornet automatically corrects for yaw/sideslip in turns. All aircraft use rudder on landing rollout to maintain directional control. The only time you’d input aileron control on the landing roll is to counter a strong crosswind to keep the upwind wing from lifting.

I almost never use the rudder in the pattern. Aside from low speed, high AoA roll in a BFM engagement or airshow routine, the current DCS Hornet's rudder (the pedals, I should say, given the nature of FBW FCS) performance is next to useless for yaw in the air.

Note the Blue's Slot pilot's left rudder slide into the diamond in this old video... we are hard-pressed to get our virtual Hornet to do the same at the present moment, though I'm sure we'll eventually get there: 👍

That was perfect. Impressive!

Yup, she is pretty good at that; obviously done it about a million times!

Indeed. Hopefully we'll get to a point with our DCS FM that our Hornet will be able to do the same. 👍
