F-5E-3 Remaster Skins

I went to the ME and found there's 3 F-5's...

F-5E (AI only dimmed)

F-5E-3 (highlighted if in your possession, this is the new one, player/client/AI)

F-5E FC (dimmed, but this is the old one, and it still has your saved games extra liveries, player/client/AI, fwiw I don't have FC 2024.)

Please double-check the order of these in the ME. Easy to swap out the new for the old and vice-versa.

Correction: Even though you can change to the old F-5E-3, it won't actually show up when you select the mission.

those three were there already before, the old flyable one was the f-5e-3 and the new one replaces this one the f-5e (ai only) is the even older 3d model

It would be nice to view ALL aircraft/ships/land units in ModelViewer 2 to aid in skin development. Making skins is now a tedious task that sucks all the fun out of making liveries. Remove this unnecessary barrier to artistic freedom ED!

Oh man... can I have my old F-5E back with all the cool custom skins that were created for it? The "remastered" F-5 doesn't have any improvements simulation-wise. And no, I wasn't expecting any new radios or four Sidewinders or an effing refueling probe or MFDs, just a fix of the wings snapping or a a less nose-heavy take-off and landing or an old HGU-2 helmet would have been cool...  I don't really need the new looks of the remastered one if I lose all the cool skins from the past.

I requested the HGU-2, 5 years ago! With pics of both the helmet and the helmet being used in F-5's. But it seems that's too much for them. Very disappointed, very sad. 😢

You can get the old F-5E-3 back, just deactivate the updated one in the list of downloaded modules.

Where are the new liveries located? Can't find them anywhere

They are encrypted in the mods/aircraft/f-5e 2024 folder (location taken from memory so foldernames might not be 100% correct)

Oh, so until the template is out we can't produce any livery...

correct, and also we son't be able to derrive our liveries from for example the default swiss livery, we'll have to create them from the template

Is a separate Wishlist entry made yet?

The texture template for users to create their own should be available soon and should be no later than the Christmas update.

As others have said, having a template ready for skin makers is amazing and we really appreciate the fact that they are provided.

However, livery artists heavily rely on Model Viewer in order to help them create their skins so that the rest of the community can enjoy them. Currently the new format that ED is using is not only encrypted but also hidden. It is understandable that a company with so much time invested into a product would want to protect it, as I myself absolutely hate when people pilfer my own liveries and upload them as their own work later on. Model Viewer is an amazing tool that saves time and resources for livery artists, it simplifies our process and work flows. The ability it provides to refresh the livery without restarting the whole game is a huge time saver. Not only that but it also serves to create fresh description.lua files which are required to have the game understand what textures the artist needs loaded so they can modify them to their liking. It has tools that help us see the roughmet files as well as normal maps which help tremendously when creating visual effects.

There are tons of livery artist out there that create for the game, and a large part of the User Files section. The skins section dwarfs all the others by a wide margin. Forcing livery artists to use the game to check their work is off-putting and will likely result in the new F-5E not getting as much love as it could. There are users out there that have bought modules solely based on the fact that their favourite livery for that aircraft was available in the User Files. It might seem like much but as a company ED should definitely look into helping out livery makers rather than hindering them.

Found the skins, you have to select appropriate country/alliance (for Swiss).

Now could be please have more USAF Aggressor skins? I'm really tired of all the Navy (and Hollywood) skins on primarily USAF jets - and there were more of them: 64th and 65th AS in the CONUS based at Nellis, the 26th AGRS at Clark, and the 527th AS at Alconbury in the UK. I flew against all of them IRL.

Navy's were called Adversary Squadrons, anyway, NOT Aggressors. They provided DACT (and were fun to fight) but did not do the full-up "Roadshow" training that the Aggressor squadrons did - where they deployed to your home base and provided tailored Red Air academics and DACT threat training.

There used to be a mod for Legacy 5 that removed the need to select any coalitions.

For the sake of clarity, are we talking RVNAF or VPAF? Both operated the type.

70s is kind of vague in that regard, but I'm assuming the former.

I hope you’re not excluding 3FTW/4503TFS F-5’s used in the SEA conflict?  There were over 200 of these used by the USAF in CAS and SpecOps operations throughout Vietnam out of various bases including Ben Hoa and Pleiku AB’s along with the A-37 Dragonflies, not to mention the Skoski Tiger Program.  With the recent resurgence in Vietnam interest within DCS, this community needs some love too.

you probably have to choose the correct country for them to appear

Previousely I would disable this requirement by deleting the country restriction in the description.lua of the liveries but these seem to be encrypted now.

The old f5e even with nation restrictions has more skins available.

Maybe more skins will get thrown in in future patches on new f5.

Mission Editor tip- Select Combined Joint Task Force Red, Combined Joint Task Force Blue or USAF Aggressors as a faction and all of the skins for whatever type you select will be viewable. You can also view all of the old F-5E-3 skins you have by selecting the F-5E Flaming Cliffs model as it uses the same livery folder as the legacy F-5E-3.

While I do like the Navy F-5N Adversary schemes, I too would like to see more USAF Aggressor skins. One of my favorites from the old F-5E was the USAF Grape 31 blue scheme and the Aggressor Snake Scheme which should have been completely USAF but somehow ended up with a Navy tail code on it...? I hope they decide to leave the huge red side numbers off of the SEA camo skin that I think is what was described as a Vietnam 1970's scheme.

The bird does look cleaner on the inside, sounds great and the canopy glass looks brand new. Sucks about the skins though as I have so many of them. 😔

However, I really do appreciate all of those folks who made the custom skins, knowing that stuff take a long time to perfect.

I hope you custom skin designers don't get discouraged and will continue to make those awesome skins. Thank you,

Once the template comes on I fully plan on reproducing my F-5s (T-38 style) and adding the latest from VMFT-501 and 502. But as everyone has stated, this task will be very difficult without use of the model viewer.

I forsee a future F-5 livery contest. Haha.

We need models to be opened in Model Viewer.  IMHO, It's not really a debateable thing.  Work flow isn't going to be 3x longer it's going be like 10x longer.  DCS takes like real time 7-10 mins to load these days.  only to have to shut it down and reload every time you want to see an alignment change?   This isn't FS 2004.  It's DCS in 2024, and it's the tool that has been used for like almost a decade.  These models aren't a joke.  And neither is the artwork that so many talented people are putting into them.  Respectfully request that whatever version of model viewer the MISSION EDITOR is obviously using; get put into the stand alone version.

NineLine said there's going to be A LOT more information on the update. One may reasonably expect there's going to be some information on the ModelViewer capability with regard to the "new 5" assets. The template has already been confirmed.
