Conuk Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 ok ok ive watched the trim video.... and the track files.... (flying into the hangar is soooooo cool!) alas my flight experience is really very very cagey. I have bought a cougar - perhaps the wrong stick for DCS but never the less its what I got... I have no pedals (although I have a G25 sat here....) and trackir 3 pro..... now I gotta admit that I really cannot even make basic flight very well. I load up the basic flight training and hit escape and take over the cotrols. I have CTRL enter pressed so I can see what my stick is doing..... I can vertical take off and fly ... sort of.... my problem is the trimming I think or the way the autopilots are on. Some questions if I may. 1) Is there a way to dampen the cougars / game sensitivity ... I mean a small push or pull on the cougar and the choppper nose dives... rolls to the left slightly ... and is just so twitchy.... This aint a dig at DCS I KNOW its me but im not sure whether I have the cougar setup correctly or theres some function of the helicopter enabled that shouldnt be. Is creating an empty mission myself any different (settings wise) to `taking over` from the training tracks... 2) the trim.... I understand what it does... but I take off pitch forward ...say 10d and trim.... I make a slight bank to the left or right etc.... adjust slightly with the collective.... and again just a small turn of the dial on the throttle seems to send me heading for the deck or up into the heavens. After trying to slow down and hover say I find the helicopter just wanting to spin round. Im making small adjustments on the stick an not trying to fight the helicopter but finding it really frustrating.... the training tracks just look so easy hence why Im not sure whether ive selected or should be deselecting some autopilot function. 3) sorry last one.... Ive just read a post `keep trim pressed while making any kind of manouver and let go after executing turn/bank etc.... ?!?! What! I thought I just hit the trim once and trim again when I need to ???? should it be held in ? is that where Im going wrong? Sorry for the long post ... but really need some basic help. Im going to buy the printed manual when amazon uk stock it but in the meantime anybody whos mastered the shark wanna help me out Id appreciate it.
JG14_Smil Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 (edited) use RCTl ENTER to see how the trim is working. remember trim is reset to last position when you release the button. Leave the AP buttons alone, except for Alt Hold and FD AP when needed. You can edit the axis curves to lessen sensitivity and open the deadband some in the axis commands menu under Options. You see smooth flying because the people practiced a lot and set their controls :) Edited June 29, 2009 by JG14_Smil
Inrptrn Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Using trim for common maneuvers looks like a preference thing. I prefer to fly manually as much as possible. Especially if you are just starting out (like me) you should work on your reflexes and natural ability to control the helo.
Conuk Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 thanks smil.... so the default options in the game are twitchy already with say a cougar ? I guess everybody has different preference. Inrptrn: Yep I tried this a bit to be honest not using the trim and I really couldnt get a level and straight flight.... continuously twitching the stick to straighten up etc... which was why I was asking if the AP was trying to turn to a waypoint or something - or maybe I missed another option. Ill have a look at the sens/deadband settings - see if they help. and yeah I hate those people that make it look so easy ;) thanks guys - Ill battle on....
CAT_101st Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 I dont hold my trim down but somthing I do do is turn off the heading hold AP only need it for rout mode and hovering to attack target with the turn to target on. You might want to check to see you config for the trim reset. It is some times duble maped in game and causes the back flip effect. As for the sencativaty you can fix that in the axes command section in game. Conuk Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 Yeah ill check the ap heading pretty sure all are on at the startup. Ill check the trim setting... Was using vipers cougar profile -but I've started a new one just for myself. I did look at the axes fine tune option but it wouldn't let me change anything....
Zembla Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 If you have G25 pedals, is it safe to assume they're plugged in? When I started using my G25 (I already had an X52 and DCS: Black Shark) I noticed my trim wouldn't work. Checking this section of the FAQ solved my issue. The helicopter needs its trim as much as air almost. I find trimming and retrimming is key to flying. Oh, that, and smoothness. Practice makes perfect as they say. -Z [sigpic][/sigpic] I aaaaaam ... a banana!
Conuk Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 hey zembia - nope not got them plugged in at the same time as the cougar.... and I changed the config file to reflect no FF.... But I guess I do need to get them setup sooner rather than later... its not good really having to keep hitting the keyboard for the rudder.
ericinexile Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Regarding Trim: It performs TWO completely unrelated functions with a single press: 1) It holds cyclic and rudder in their new trimmed positions, and 2) It tells the autopilot to hold current bank, pitch, and heading It is this duality of purpose that causes confusion. If you desire just the first function for the button then engage the Flight Director. My Fing ID Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 Flight director you say? I know the trim has enraged me. I've been training on strafing runs and couldn't use rockets because I'm fighting the AP the whole run. I could flip my gun to fixed and hold down the trim button and squeeze the trigger at the same time, but my weapon release button won't allow me to hold trim at the same time. Outta curiosity where's the FD switch and where do I set it? On an unrelated subject I'm having a problem firing missiles. I have to set my weapons to manual. I'm locking target, using auto rotate, laser is on, but I just cannot get that c unless I'm in manual. Oh and I can't hit anything at close range (<1KM) but I'm guessing that's just the missile. At range I hit fairly often.
ericinexile Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 (edited) The Flight Director is the blue button to the right of the 4 blue Autopilot/Axis Dampening buttons. Conuk Posted July 1, 2009 Author Posted July 1, 2009 cheers ericinexile.... Ive missed what the flight director buttons do in the manual - Ill go and look it up again. I have had all 4 AP buttons lit while `taking over` from the training tracks so I guess ive been trying to hard to override the AP I guess... because when I try the shooting range mission the helicopter dont seem as wild - maybe the settings (quick startup) are not the same as the training track. Ill look over the manual again. Thanks again. (I still cant manage to change the fine tune setting via the options in shark - they just grayed out and I cant select them.... any ideas? )
the_pantman Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 I've got a cougar as well and, like you, I found the sensitivity ridiculous. I set the the axis curvature slider to 21 on both the joy y and joy x axis and now it is beautifully controllable.....
Arclight Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 (I still cant manage to change the fine tune setting via the options in shark - they just grayed out and I cant select them.... any ideas? )There are 2 drop-down selection boxes at the top. First will probably be at "KA-50 real". Select "Axis Commands" in the second one; you should get a list with all commands that accept an axis for input. Click the axis you want to adjust under your controller, and the "axis tune" option should be lit up. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] DCS A-10C: putting the 'art' into 'warthog'. (yes, corny. Sorry.)

ericinexile Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 Why didn't ED include this bit in the manual? I think they did but you but you have to read the whole manual twice to piece together this simple concept. I've been a flight instructor and A320 check-airman so I try to make things simple insofar as I understand them. I cannot claim to understand the Ka50 but I have tallent for guesses, assumptions and speculation. My Fing ID Posted July 4, 2009 Posted July 4, 2009 I'm curious why the FD isn't activated by default. You'd think you would want a button to turn on the ability to lock trim and AP rather than have that be the standard. Since reading this thread I've been doing much much better. Fighting the AP has caused everything from rage to outright crashes. Now I can do fancy stuff like get in a gun duel with a ZSU! Lost my SHILKA or whatever and my speedometer but damn if it wasn't fun.

I need to flip switches all over the place to enable anything. :D [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] DCS A-10C: putting the 'art' into 'warthog'. (yes, corny. Sorry.)
