We all know what is needed to make that happen. But ED isn't willing to invest the time, money and resources to do it.

As much as we want WWII to continue and be successful there are realities to its development. It has a much smaller player base, the return on investment is much lower than modern aircraft.  We have to use our resources very carefully and there has to be a return of investment for it to continue. This often means the planned work takes longer but it is worth it to keep the WWII content coming to DCS. 
Please don't forget DCS core is free to use, we have two free terrains and a third on the way ( WWII Marianas ), two free aircraft, with a third aircraft ( SU-25A ) also coming for free.
We have no plans for a subscription model so we have to sell products to continue all of our development, that is usually in module sales, terrain and asset packs.

Apologies for sticking my oar in, but I did think that when the Spitfire or Thunderbolt were introduced, that a comment from ED was that the Warbirds actually made more profit than most of the jets.

Note that I’m not trying to state that the “Zero must be made”, just chipping in.  I would like to see the zero, but haven’t a problem with it being picked up by another 3rd party.

The work involved with warbirds is of course less than a modern aircraft, but we still have to use our resources carefully, WWII is just not as popular as more modern aircraft. 

Zero will be great in DCS, and I hope we can share news in the future.

Interesting how the times are changing. 20 years ago WW2 sims were dominating the market, while Lock On (and modded 90ties sims) were almost the only offerings for modern jets. Guess, the interest in WW2 aviation withers more and more away, with each year that passes, seperating us from this war.

The important thing is to ensure development continues with WWII, and that is what we plan to do. I know development is slow and it can be frustrating but we will continue to bring new content for it. I think its clear to see we are investing, the WWII Marianas and the new assets are a considerable amount of work for WWII and I think it will be enjoyed by many.

A bit off-topic, but this phenomenon reminds me a bit of Harley Davidson, how its sales are dropping because its clientele is slowly dying and the young are not interested on that style of bike

I know it is difficult to confirm any dates, but is there a chance to see it this year? Or is it planned for beyond?

Then again the flightsim representations of the PTO, at least at this moment, are weak to non-existent. There might be other stuff on the (distant) horizon elsewhere, but DCS has the pre-existing footprint. If we get funky carrier action and Hellcats and Corsairs and even AI Japanese planes and assets in something approaching a cohesive package, that's a great big fat flightsim thing and might be very alluring to a chunk of flyers. 

 

I'm not a huge PTO guy, but there's no way I'm passing up Hellcats and Zeros with top shelf eye candy. That's some flying fun I want a piece of.

I can say that this is certainly true for me. I did a trial on the WW2 stuff, especially the asset pack, and it's just not complete. In instant action missions (official ones, mind you) for the Channel map or when I use the mission generator (the official one, mind you), the Allies constantly got Flak 36s as their air defense. Wtf? Then there is the overall lack of singleplayer content, aside from the paid campaigns. It feels just way too incomplete.

And now I am expected to buy another asset pack for WW2?

Even that would be fine but I see very little progress regarding the Western Front so I obviously expect the PTO asset pack to stay incomplete and non-developed as well.

+1 ... and for sure any assets pack is absolute peanuts when compared to the hardware cost of the machine needed to run a Sim like this

My point is that we'll never get perfection, or anything remotely close in many cases, but we will get enough to make for enjoyable flying. I'm happy with the WWII Assets pack. I think I paid about $10 and I definitely got my money's worth considering how often I use it.

I bought mine on 2017, bundled with the Normandy map so its cost was about US$ 8

This is part of the reason I'm not always as patient as I should be when people....... express concern, about paying for asset packs. It's just a few bucks, and it's only the second set. It's not like that other older sim with a long series of micro transactions where you paid for a scarf your pilot could wear. And each colour was another $1. That's not what's going on here. 

 

This is a heavy duty, very sophisticated flightsim. And **** ain't free. Ya want more, ya gotta pay for more. If ED wants $10 or whatever for PTO assets and that makes my flights better, I'm fine with that. Just make cool stuff and I'm happy to pay for it.
