@Wags @NineLine @BIGNEWY Saw these few videos released by the USAF and thought they would be beneficial to the project.  They are legit and sanctioned by the USAF at the end of the video.  Great reference footage for how the HMDS needs to look, flight suit, and actually gives you guys some great POV perspective for what your VR pilot needs to look like.  I guess the USAF is relaxing somewhat with video footage in the cockpit.  Still no screens as suspected of instrumentation on the panel, however, a great shot of AA refueling.  Both videos should help with development if you do not already have these.  They are hot off the press. Also might be worth subscribing to this channel for reference material. Looks like all the videos are authorized by all branches and a lot of current footage.

Pretty good carrier footage from this year if needed.

Sorry, but these videos bring nothing new to the table. Stuff that matters is behind the OPSEC. 🙂

In the first video I found it interesting how much the pilot is working the throttle during the low altitude (I assume terrain masking) and it doesn't seem to follow a consistent pattern. Sometimes he's pulling power when initiating a high G turn and other times it's the opposite. I normally leave power set and only  reduce when rolling inverted for down hill and punching it in high G. Maybe he's trying to maintain a set speed?

Another thing noticed was the difficulty spotting the wingman when he was in combat spread (I did have the video set to max at 1080p). It seemed very similar to what I experience in my Pimax Crystal in game.

I 100% agree regarding OPSEC EchoOneOne, we are absolutely on the same page.  This project is proceeding regardless of those concerns.

What I do not want this thread to turn into is another Sierra show about how ED sucks for making the F-35.  We (largely including myself about the HMDS and getting a thread shut down) have strongly conveyed our concerns about OPSEC, accuracy, and their actual ability to gather real data on the F-35.  They heard us loud and clear and know our thoughts and opinions, trust me, this I know.  The best we can do is respect the fact ED is giving this their best run at it and assist by providing solid reference material when it pops up.

My goal with the two videos above is to assist them in modeling the 3D HMDS, pilot suit, O2 mask, ect... with an accurate frame of reference. In my professional opinion, they are not going to be able to get remotely close to the real thing in person without some hefty hookups from a PR perspective.  Below is the closest I have seen the media get to doing a piece on the HMDS.  I know where this was shot and I was surprised to see this was put out there.  This was approved by Lockheed Martin. They actually allowed the chick doing the interview to put the HMDS on and a G-Suit.

Point is, there is enough out there at this point for a visually stunning model, but it will never perform like Jenna Jameson. LOL.

You know some F-35 pilot is going to complain about the inaccuracy of it, but what can you do?

You could always try to get added to SecDef's Signal channel to get more accurate information... 🙂

Make sure you give him some whiskey.

Anyway yeah, we got issues, and needs to be fixed. Anyway though, I mean I'm sure the team has something in mind and will probably be good enough to keep the FBI away from them

my guess is ED was given full access by either Lockheed or the airforce to a sim like this. That’s what the FAQ sounds like.

What you can do is work with them to make your module better.

Honestly, the best depiction they'd be able to make for an F-35 would probably be having quite a lot of time to model their F-35 after a simulator. But ED's ties to the East kind makes me second guess they'd even get that opportunity.

I think my time with ED is pretty much over (though I'm really not doing anything right now), and frankly I have no interest in the F-35 (unless they do a Super Hornet or an F-35C). I know a guy who's doing F-35 skins for Strike Fighters 2, and would recommend him, but I don't know if ED needs a skinning group when I'm sure that they have enough people. But if something comes along that I think will feel useful I'm pretty sure I'd share it.

No, you said that you knew there'd be some F-35 pilot complaining about the module, and I'm saying that what you do is get in contact with them and find out what's wrong with your module, what they don't like, etc.

Oh that... I don't know any F-35 pilots (I was US Army, not USAF), but I'm sure somewhere down the road some actual pilots may have complaints and so on. And I'm sure ED is doing the best they can to not use classified stuff to ensure we get a quality product. So the future remains to be seen how accurate the pit is though, as that's the main contention point for the module. And I'm sure that they may have some issues and the USAF may interject (if they want them to make a module strictly for military use) and so on. Like the Eurofighter and such. Normally ED gets in touch with people who are subject matter experts on the module and so on, so I'm sure they're looking for somebody to help them out without breaking any laws. So hopefully they are.

Another good video from the boys at Luke.  This may be an FMS customers footage.  I thought I saw Denmark markings on the Wing mans aircraft.

Also another good video that was just released.  These guys do some insane cockpit work for simulators if you have the cash flow.  Available to the public at a pretty penny. If I remember correctly, they have a Hornet, Viper, Eurofighter, and I think they were working and Apache.

F-16, F-35, F-18 and other combat fighter jet simulator cockpits | VIPER WING.

I always thought it would be amazing to set up a company to the public and charge by the hour to come in a fly in the simulator using DCS and projectors.  Use these and the applicable DCS modules.  Use to be a place when I was a kid here in Texas that did this with real cockpits from several jets.  Of course the flight sim was nothing like DCS, but just sitting in the cockpit and flying a sim that way as a kid was something you wont forget.

Thanks for sharing these @Devil 505.  I applaud your approach to assist ED to make the best F35 as possible without crossing OPSEC lines.

ED has an opportunity to do this right - especially for VR.  I really hope these videos help illustrate a level of expectations we have for this module.  We'll see how serious they are about creating as full fidelity an experience as possible in an open source world.

I wish the devs all the best on this initiative.

If they were a serious company they wouldn't try to do the F-35...

This video at 1:43 has the only image I've seen of the F-35's signature management system (Vertical Situation Display). It also shows the ground collision avoidance system pulling 18Gs. Also has DAS highlighting IR plum from AA missiles.

There are quite a few slideshows and simulator demonstrations out there showing the VSD page in action and interacting with ownship and target positioning. This is the clearest screenshot I have found of it so far.

Note the bug splat when BLOB is enabled on the HSD.

What information can we glean from the signature management system found within the SS? Basically what is does it mean or what is it telling me?

You mean the VSD with the RCS orb on it?

My understanding is that the centre of the circle is the aircrafts mirrored relative signature when viewed from directly in front. And then the edges of the circle show the signature when viewed from 90 degrees up/down and left/right.

This (to me) makes sense knowing you can vaguely see the expected increased signatures when the target can directly see into your radome, and your side profile. It also lines up with the target positioning on the HSD.
