Many here, including myself, have the problem, they cannot catch a wire in self created missions, while they trap nicely in the default missions.
I did many tests from excluding mods to trying different maps. What I found is:

I copied the carrier from the "Rising Sun" mission into my training mission - I caught the wire on the first attempt.

I tried with my carrier: no trap. The only difference, my carriers are steaming SSW, the Rising Sun carrier steams NNE.

So I turned the Rising Sun carrier 180° and did not catch the wires anymore.

I then turned my carrier 180° and I immediately caught the wire. Winds were adjusted each time, of course.

The results are reproducible - heading NNE: trap, heading SSW: no trap.

My guess it has something to do with the algebraic sign of the x,z coordinates of the cables' start- and end points.

Edit: Marianas WW2 map

I also reproduced it on the Channel map: carrier heading SW - no trap, carrier heading NE - trap.

I think that you can catch wire if carrier is heading between 271 to 89

No, Casmo just verified it on his live stream. It works in quadrants 1,2 and 4. The problem only occurs in quadrant 3, 181 to 270 degrees

Public Beta (aka EA) simply has much more people testing. Sometimes brute force can't be compensated.....😅

This particular anomaly being just too weird to ignore, I had to test it myself and I found Casmo's analysis spot on. 3 for 3 traps going 050 and 0 for 3 going 230 with the Essex. I switched to the Forrestal and got 3 for 3 going 050 and 2 for 3 going 230 - the first attempt was due to my forgetting to lower the hook <DOH>!!
I am sure that M3 will be able to figure this one out quite easily. The trick is to get them working on it. It is probably lower on their list of priorities at this point.

What a crazy " feature" is this....   i believe this tops the  rocket-trainingmission that has no rockets 😄

Could have been worse. Like the time Open Office refused to print anything on a Tuesday. Link

Expect Admiral will be pulling his hair out about the carrier twilight zone. Bit odd.

Haven't tried the carrier yet, cheers all for the videos and tips, should be a laugh.

Hello guys,

also had the problem to be not able to catch a wire on the Essex.

It worked in my own mission until I put some other ships into the group of the carrier.

The heading didnt change a thing as i tried different ones after reading this thread.

I deleted the whole group and just put in the Essex again and it worked, then I put some other ships back into the group and bam wasn´t working.

Not sure what exactly causes this.

Update:

I had two Essex in my Group, one with parked planes in the back of the deck (only for coldstart and takeoff) and the other one with a clean deck.

The wires on the clean one didnt work, but on the carrier with the parked planes they did. So I just switched the parked planes from one to the other carrier and now its working for me.

Still dont know whats the issue

Encountering the same on Caucasus Map, i already started wondering why the heck i couldn´t trap despite a near-perfect approach.

Turned the vessel around and voilá - working.

When in doubt - climb. Nobody ever collided with air.
