DCS Takes up 450GB Space from my drive

Is it me or is it same for everyone? Currently DCS occupies 450GB from my disk space. How about you. How much your DCS installation takes up from your drives?

Is there a way to reduce this size?

Yes, it's the same for everyone, depending on how many modules and maps, which take most space, you have installed. Your install is in the lower actually.
For me?
≈1.2TB for core + ≈300GB mods/liveries in Saved Games. Videos and tracks=Unknown.
You have some ways to go...

Uninstall maps. Otherwise - no.

 

...and it will further increase in size with new maps and modules incoming.
So either skip some of that or live with the storage needs.

Did you actually read my answer.  

If you want a cleaner app, get Treesize free or similar. That picture was just messy. No need to know the allocations. Half your install are maps.

1,207 TB.
Since I have DCS on a 1TB drive, and when updating it needs installation space, I moved around 600GB (less used stuff) to 2 other drives using symbolic links. Works fine.

@Europa there are ways to deal with that. Like Symlink or Virtual Drives (both functions of windows). But ultimately you need the physical storage (preferable SSD) for DCS.

Hi.  Mine is almost same total size.

I've installed all the terrain modules released , and they are using 970 GB under Mods/terrains/ .
DCS core system files use 190 GB , flyable modules + AI assets I have are in 60 GB.

@Hiob  I am running DCS on a dedicated 2TB nvme disk dedicated to flight simulation. Currently I still have free space but it is flooding very fast.

Welcome to the club!

To be honest, if one is interested in everything a minimum 2TB is needed just in case, because when you have everything and there are several map updates at the same time, you risk that the update is 250GB+, and you need that space until the Updater deletes the old files. (Very simplistic explanation).

And, in some years, even a 4TB disk might be needed. And that's only for DCS. If you have other sims, well, one needs even more space. But luckily, disk is fairly cheap compared to other parts.

I have two dedicated 2 TB SSds for flightsims. One for DCS and one for "the other". But since "the other" moved to streaming with the 2024 version (which seem to work well for me), I got some headroom for DCS.

Friendly reminder to whom it may concern. SSDs shouldn't be filled to the brim. 75% max at best...... otherwise they will age fast (wear leveling etc....)

...and get slow....

Hopefully not in a few years when you need one.
I checked some prices, and a dedicated PCIE card where you can put additional NVMEs are not that expensive. Less than 4TB with 2*2TB drives, if one have a spare PCIE slot, but that might make something else slower.

I got some basic 2.5" Sata SSDs. I don't think you necessarily need the fastest PCI4/5 M2 SSds for a good experience. As long as it isn't an 'ol spinning HDD....

Saved games / OS and DCS are on fast NVME SSDs though.....

About $400 to $500Cdn. right now for a 4TB NVME. Close to $600 for a 4TB SSD. Ouch!  Need my cash for fancy a new monitor/

Some of that stuff is beyond my mental snack bracket. When I built my PC I did know that using the NVME slot would disable at least one SATA connection, something like that. That stuff really starts to confuse me fast.

I have Windows on 2×512GB SSDs in stripe, and 4×512GB SSDs, also in stripe, for DCS. Kept my Saved Games at default location. Works very well. Been going like this since May 2013.

Every user is different, on my case I not only have the DCS program folder at amost 1 TB, but also have the DCS folder at Saved Games, and my collection of Mods, liveries and missions with an extra 900 GB:

De-install the Maps that you are not using at the moment, on my case I have the Channel map uninstalled as I'm not using it ATM.
