JAG Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 Hi guys, I was watching in youtube Wings of the Red Star, a discovery channel series, very interesting by the way, about the Hind, and at 0:37, 1:10, when the Hind is flying very low, the sense of speed is amazing, but in the game when you are in the cockpit, it looks like you are going really slow. I've been trying low flying at 80, 100 and 150 km and the sense of speed is almost the same, slow. Please don't take this as a bad criticism, I like the game, it's just curiosity, that's why I'm asking . I was thinking it could be my machine, it's not a super powerful high end pc, but it could run the games very well. Kenan Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 I think your rig is too slow. Everybody else here has a great speed sensation. You need to upgrade ASAP. Boberro Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 It can be your imagination, real life has many details, in DCS you don't have many or as much where your eye can snap. But of course it can be also program disadvantage. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... GGTharos Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 That's simple to answer: The feeling of speed looks great because the FOV is so narrow. There's also the matter of finer detail on the ground than what you see in Black Shark, which can affect the sensation of speed under some circumstances - but in general? What you get in DCS is pretty much what it would feel like in the real thing. Feuerfalke Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 That largely depends where you are flying. If you fly over a large grassy area, with few or no objects around, you won't have much sense of speed. If you fly above an area with trees and buildings, or even a city, you will get a very good sense of speed. The difficulty is to stay low, though, and possibly with a wider field of view, depending on settings and monitor. As you can see, the flying-scenes in the video are taken from just above treetop-level, so basically the lower you go, the faster you'll feel ;) Check out GA's movie "Edge" and tell me there is no sense of speed in these shots ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qywam5omwO0 MSI X670E Gaming Plus | AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D | 64 GB DDR4 | AMD RX 6900 XT | LG 55" @ 4K | Cougar 1000 W | CreativeX G6 | TIR5 | CH HOTAS (with BU0836X-12 Bit) + Crosswind Pedals | Win11 64 HP | StreamDeck XL | 3x TM MFD
nemises Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 at 35 seconds, the film is sped up about 2 X IMHO
VMFA117_Poko Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 (edited) Sense of speed depends on FOV (field of view). Zoom out a little with "NUM /" to feel the speed a bit more. And keep in mind what Boberro said - real life scenery has a lot more details what also enhance the sense. {EDIT} Damn! GG has said exacly same thing a little faster ;) Edited September 8, 2009 by Poko24
Feuerfalke Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 at 35 seconds, the film is sped up about 2 X IMHO Some scenes are faster than ingame. Agreed. But the movie is shown with x2 speed in general. sinelnic Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 (edited) Nice vid! "Flying as best as you can, giving all you've got and pushing the machine to its limits, and still being shot down, many times, doesn't do any good to your ego" This should be written in DCS's retail box cover!! About the sense of speed, a crucial difference between BS and many other helos is that it fas the cockpit FOV of a plane, whereas in most helos you get to see the ground below your feet. In BS, you're mostly looking tens of meters away from you, and yes, the speed sense is not the same... [Edit] Also beaten by GG... Griffin Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 What you get in DCS is pretty much what it would feel like in the real thing. I'd say that what you get in DCS is pretty much what it would look like in the real thing. It's a whole different experience to be flying for real. Not only you see the speed, you also feel it. This is the biggest shortcoming of computer simulators in my opinion and I've also heard and read many pilots say so. It was the biggest rush in my life to be flying 5 m above tree tops at 250 km/h! Then again flying at the same speed at 1 km felt like we were going 10 km/h. Yeah, after supersonic jets in Lock On it feels very slow. Just needs getting used to it.
GGTharos Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 ^^^^ Yes, you are certainly correct, I should have said 'looks'. Heh, my best experience with 'difference in speed' was going karting. Doing 70kph in my car ... meh. Are we going somewhere yet? On the kart? ZOMG what am I in Indy500? Same speed, completely different feeling because of the POV. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
JAG Posted September 8, 2009 Author Posted September 8, 2009 You are right guys, there is not many objects that can give the sense of speed, and the fiel of view is an important factor, but anyway the sense of speed of the game is good enough to make you pay attention, when you fly low. I will try to zoom out the cockpit view, to see how the sense of speed looks like. Yes it's a nice vid, and the other ones of the series are nice too, I was watching them yesterday. ericinexile Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 When I fly IRL at 50 feet and at 150 kts it looks and feels EXACTLY like DCS. Smokin' Hole My DCS wish list: Su25, Su30, Mi24, AH1, F/A-18C, Afghanistan ...and frankly, the flight sim world should stop at 1995.
Nate--IRL-- Posted September 8, 2009 Posted September 8, 2009 To increase the feeling of speed: Set the Cockpit FOV to the widest it will go, find a river that begins at the top of some really high mountain valley and fly down it at below 15m with the FD on. I do this just to relax. it's great fun. Nate 1 Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading

ED Team Glowing_Amraam Posted September 8, 2009 ED Team Posted September 8, 2009 at 35 seconds, the film is sped up about 2 X IMHO Actually, i recorded at HALF speed, but increased the speed by 100%, meaning the footage is actually playing at normal speed. Though my "mouse jerkiness" in that shot makes it look otherwize... I was flying pretty fast if i remember correctly... 2 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgJRhtnqA-67pKmQ3A2GsgA ED youtube channel https://www.facebook.com/glowingamraam My facebook page
