Flaming Cliffs: Unbearably Low FPS

I have just bought Flaming Cliffs 2 (and Black Shark) and I'm having terrible framerate problems.

 

Just flying around, the framerate is bearable, about 10-25 fps. However, in the first mission on the A10 campaign, this drops to between 2 and 8 FPS. I have set all settings apart from resolution to low, and attempted the FPS fix, all of which made no difference.

 

Was wondering if you fine people would be able to help

 

My system:(a notebook)

AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-70 2.00GHZ

4GB RAM

Windows 7 32

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 (512 MB)

Laptop model is Acer Aspire 6530G

That right there is your problem. That card, and that laptop, is not meant to run complex 3D games. It's main purpose is to support stuff like youtube and other video or "internet 2.0" applications.

 

It's not the worst I've seen try to run this application, so I'll find a link that includes some tweaks you can try to improve your situation.

Rusty, read through here. Some things in the discussion there do not apply since yours is a laptop (the discussion on installing a new card) but the settings tweak discussion does apply.

Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. Hopefully that'll bring it up to a playable standard. Otherwise I'll just stick to IL 2 until I can afford a bigger place with room to build a desktop!

Apart from your HD3650 (with passive cooler) the other big bottleneck is your CPU pegged to 2.0 Ghz.

 

It's like this: more CPU clock more FPS! It's always been this way ever since Flanker.

 

People here O/C their CPUs to 4.0+ to ensure constantly playable FPS with lots (but not all) features maximized (water is a great FPS killer and no point in having it maxed).

HAZE =IS A BIG FRAME HIT recommend this off on low end pcs, however it may effect terrain textures graphics.

LIGHTS = also turn off on a low end pc

even try 16 bit color mode but again may effect visuals ingame , but will gain a few frames.

Well with those options at times I'm hitting over 60FPS! Obviously I've got to turn quite a few options to low, but it looks to be a vast improvement without totally killing the graphics. Sure I can see a fair difference, but it now seems flyable.

 

Thank you very much for the help. Just gotta tinker to find the best balance between looking ok-ish without running the frame rate into the ground (and the plane with it)

Hi sorry to ask.. How on earth do you get 60FPS with this config? May i ask your graphics.cfg and options.lua files?I've a low end card too.. I go often down to 12-17..Thanks.

Admittedly, upon further examination, the framerate still hit the floor when trying to engage enemies. With haze disabled, I get a huge framerate boost, but the look of the ground is horrible. With everything else turned way down, I get 25-30 ish when flying about, and in the A10 instant action, however when I try to play the first campaign mission, things still slow to a crawl.

 

Looks like I'll be sticking to the original flaming cliffs, Lock on, Falcon 4.0 AF and IL2 1946 which all run much better until I can improve my rig

Hey, that's me!:) So yeah, pretty much the whole thing is useful, read it all. It will save EtherrealN a few hours of trying to explain everything to people like us. :]

mind the ai and scripts running also takes a big chunk of processing as well , campaigns on a low end laptop and pc will be a no go bust am afraid, instant action youll be fine or go inside editor create small ai target missions.

Was this only after the patch? I may consider a clean reinstall if it could improve my situation, but I'm not hunting miracles.

Rusty_M, remember to set your Windows 7 performance options to "Adjust for best performance" in Advanced system properties!
