Deadman's A-10 C Cockpit Build

Wicks Aircraft carries MS-35266 slotted phillister head 10-32 screws. Not quite what you're looking for, but being a milspec part, it might have the head diameter you need. http://aircraftproducts.wicksaircraft.com/item/slotted-machine-screws/ms35266-fillister-head-steel-screw/ms35266-65?#

Also take a look at SkyGeek http://www.skygeek.com/military-standard-screws.html Random stuff, somewhat more reasonable quantities...

Small Sitrep on the EU build. As already stated by DM the build process has taken longer than anticipated. Job, family life etc has meant that I have been unable to work 110% on this test build, but its looking a little better now.

Still lots of small loose ends, but pit per drawing is 90% complete.

Right hand side:

Center view

Following tasks missing completion:

Various paint jobs e.g. aluminum skin retainers, carriage bolts, inner/outer skin.

Making fake ejection seat guide rails, and mountings for same.

Make hangers for AOA indication and Refueling lights.

Assembly instruction are 90% complete.

Anyway just a little teaser. Enjoy and have a very nice weekend

Cheers

Hans

Looks good. Can't wait to see it completed.

Looking forward to seeing the plans.

Do you have an estimate on the hours it took to get to 90%.

I don't see any ribs - wondering how strong are the sides. Strong enough to enter egress over the top?

Excellent work guys - much thanks.

Hi thanks but yes i have checked them out wrong thread and head size to fit the instrument clamp and the engine cluster panel.

Have you tried Aircraft Spruce?

Not sure if these would work for you but they might be the right size or maybe others on the site.

CNCs and Laser engravers are great but they can't do squat with out a precise set of plans.

Until now it's about 75 hours. There has been a lot of going to and from the building process.

One of the main features with Deadman's design is that there no ribs. The canopy support beam can hold my full weight (small guy of about 74kg/163lbs).

Looks great hans! Taking out the ribs is great. I really like dimebug's plans and have a lot of respect don't get me wrong on that. But I have spent more time hacking parts off those ribs after the sides were in place than I spent making them in the first place. No ribs is a huge time saver

Great work guys. Looking forward to seeing it all done

wait until you see the side console design no Dzus laser cut for M4 or #8 screw for fake Dzus connectors in the proper places but you could still place a real panel over the holes and attach it .

Great to hear the sides have the strength to enter and exit the simpit like in the real aircraft.

DM - can you expand upon what you wrote about the side consoles and attaching panels. I had been leaning toward using DZUS rails. Is that not an option?

Thanks for this great work.

Hi John using Dzus rail is not an option with the set being eventuated at the moment.

Do to every one concern about price I widened the consoles approximately 0.125 inch to use bent sheet aluminum as Dsuz rail replacement that is included with the kit. A savings of ruffly $500.00 for the real Dzus rail.

I guess since they are out, Hans has asked if I will share a few more views. This one from the US. I too have been delayed much to my chagrin and embarrassment. I've had health issues and quite a scary surgery that has put me down for a bit. Recovering now slowly. Mine also is complete, minus the side consoles, MIP, and of course, the ACES II. It's taken a little more time than Hans, in the high 80 hr. range. Cost wise was very inexpensive in relation to material wise. Hans has made some incredibly detailed instructions that I could not improve upon to save my life, so thank you for that. Also thank you DM, for without you I could have never made something so lifelike or nice. Again I apologize to you for the time delay.

Ya know I would love o say two day or two weeks but those things tend to get thrown back at me . So like the bad boys of rock and roll say its done when its done. I will say very soon I will get a hold of the company for the consoles and center pedestal tomorrow to see if we are any where near being approved for a build ( this means they have so many spec they can and can not do the engineer just said shoot me a copy of your file and I will look at it)

The major decision to sill make is the material and construction method for the MIP

Same here. I'm even thinking in upgrading my dimebug's based sideconsoles and center panel with this beautiful cockpit tub. The rail for the ACES seat looks so cool!

Deadman, So far it seems your plans offer a build that has hothing to envy to those viperpits ubber detailed accurate cockpits.

HMA, MacFevre, what kind of material do you use for the skin of the shell. I mean left and right for the big surface?

Hans, are you german?

I used plain 1/8" masonite, or hardboard. Cut it and painted the smooth surface. It was very inexpensive, under $10 and turned out very well. Just had to watch the screw holes though and use a skin washer underneath the screw. Otherwise the head of the screw may pull through the board.

Boltz - You're correct, the large surface area of the floor with it being 3/4" makes for a very solid surface. Fastening to it the joists made from 2x8 boards makes it almost indestructible. The whole thing once it's put together is very sturdy, no worries about anything getting broken. The first pit I did was off Dimbug's plans, and though very good, I made it from MDF. Huge mistake on my part. It was not only heavier, but on occasion pulled a few screws out. MDF is not a material that likes things screwed into it. ;)
